Very pleasantly surprised by Riabko, Degarmo and Young. Review by: Julian, Mar 26, 2010 |
| Wonderful, energetic new cast led by former Canadian pop star Kyle Riabko and former American Idol runner up Diana DeGarmo. Ace Young plays Berger and he was also on American Idol. Don't bring your kids --or yourself-- if sexuality and nudity bothers you. Kudos to Degarmo and Young for doing the famous nude scene with the entire cast. I'm sure it unnerved them at first but their embrace during it was beautiful and enhanced the message of the ... read more scene. |

This is pure beauty Review by: vinny, Mar 9, 2010 |
This country is spiraling downward into something that we call our end. Hair is the one thing that brings hope and light to our situation. It shows that through everything that is going on, so awfully, in the world --- love and peace will prevail. We need to forget power, greed, money, and hate ... and the cure to this life is peace and love -- no desires. This show spreads love and makes you feel like there is a reason to live. At the ... read more same time you have fun listening to beautiful music, having an amazing time, and dancing on stage. This show is an equalizer, makes everyone the same. Recommended for everyone -- regarded nudity and vulgarity! PS - i have not seen the new cast..and i'd like to hear some reviews on them! |

Hair has been notorious for nudity, profanity, drugs and more "offensive" behavior since the 1960s when it first debuted on Broadway! Get over it!! Review by: BroadwayBoundGal, Feb 26, 2010 |
I have absolutely no sympathy for those who saw Hair and found it to be a vulgar production! The vulgarity is part of the show - Hair has been notorious for nudity, profanity, drugs and more "offensive" behavior ever since the 1960s when it first debuted on Broadway! Get over it!! Now assuming you aren't someone who is under 30 or who lived under a rock during the 1960's and early 1970's - here's the scoop... Hair is a great time and ... read more the music is as relevant today as it was when it first came out in the 1960's. You'll hear classic tunes such as "Aquarius" and "Let the Sun Shine In" and you'll also re-live true to life actions such as burning draft cards for the Vietnam War and a young man's struggle to decide to report for duty or not. Yes, yes the nude scene is part of this production but it is fast and not at all offensive (if you know the story line and understand this was part of hippie culture of the time, and, most importantly, the fact this show is not for children or the truly uptight.) To Sum It Up: Leave the kids and Grandma home for this production, and, go with a free, open mind - get some background about the Vietnam war if you're unfamiliar with the time period - and enjoy the show! This review is written by a New Yorker who goes to Broadway shows on an average of once per month. |

Loved it! Review by: Jill, Feb 21, 2010 |
| I loved this show- so much I have seen it twice once with my husband and once with my 20 year old son. My son did not like it as much as my husband and I did. It is fun, awesome music, but very emotional. the nudity is so quick, you barely see it. |

"Hair" Review by: Tom Bestor, Feb 16, 2010 |
I remember the cast album for "Hair" quite clearly. My oldest brother (20 years older) owned it, and when it was first out it was played with some regularity in his house, usually after a Saturday night dinner where some not insignificant amount of wine was consumed. I was 11 or so when the cast album was released, so some of it went over my head. I remember someone asking me if I liked the record, and when I said "yes" my other brother said ... read more "how about the one about fellatio?" I can still hear my mother's chiding him, "Bill!," while trying to stifle a laugh. I knew some of the words in the song to which he was referring ("Sodomy"), but that wasn't among them at the time. But this is all really beside the point, isn't it? I guess the point was that I went into this new production of "Hair" with a relative familiarity with the music. I'd also seen the cast perform during the 2009 Tony Awards, and loved it. Their performance was wild and energetic and unleashed -- and it's even more so live. Be warned, this is not a production for children. This warning is too late for a seemingly single dad, who brought three 5-6 year olds to see the rather overt sexuality, hear the F-bomb dropped with some regularity, and hum along with the aforementioned "Sodomy": "Sodomy...fellatio...cunnilingus...pederasty." So keep anyone under 16 or so at home, but come and enjoy yourself. Unlike last night's dreadful "Finnian's Rainbow," this revival has almost as much relevance as it ever did. When one character says "war is about the white people sending the black people to kill the yellow people to protect the land we stole from the red people," the only alteration that would be needed to make that more contemporary would be to change "yellow people" to "brown people." We're fighting an unpopular war abroad and are torn apart by political and generational divisions at home. Yet the message of "Hair" remains the same: love each other. And let the sun shine in. |

A Joyous 60's Romp!! GO SEE IT! Review by: quizking101, Feb 6, 2010 |
Saw HAIR on February 3rd, the matinee. It was AMAZING. Jay Armstrong Johnson was on as Claude, but I could not tell the difference betweeen him and Gavin Creel. Will Swenson was incredibly comical and I <3 Caissie Levy as Shiela! Plus, the fact they run into the audience and interact makes the show come to life even more since you are sitting and watching a plain, old musical, but are part of one. I was a little close to the speakers (Left ... read more Orch. Row C, 9-11), but it was good since I could distinctly hear everyone speaking. The one kink in the script I couldn't understand was the Claude/Berger/Sheila love triangle (if there was one, it was hard to tell). The entire "acid trip" scene had amazing effects and made you feel like you just took a hit of LSD. The on-stage dance party with the Tribe at the end just solidified the show as my favorite of all of the shows I've ever seen. WARNING: The nude scene at the end of Act I is about 30 seconds long, but they are just standing still and not simulating any sexual activity (like they are in most parts of the show).

Nothing under the Hair Review by: STK, Feb 3, 2010 |
Blah. Went to Hair with family and friends for my wife's birthday. Given the many positive reviews, I was looking forward to the production, though I didn't care for any earlier incantation, including the movie. I agree with the negative comments, and don't agree much with the positive ones. The vulgarity is gratuitous -- sure, some is fine to show the 'celebration of youth' -- but scene after scene....Dialog and plot are incoherent, and I ... read more felt as if I was seeing some touristy 'Blue Man Group' than a show intelligently crafted; in fact I'd rather have seen BMG. I suppose the high point was the too-prominent Telecaster lead guitar player in the orchestra, but even he ruined a solid performance by smirking and recognizing attention from other cast/audience members. It's as bad a peeking out from behind the curtains. No doubt this production will continue to succeed, but it's...a shame. |

This is the dawning... Review by: boogaloodownbroadway, Jan 27, 2010 |
| Fun romp through the Age of Aquarius! The performers and musicians were great, and the music and story transcended time. The spirit of the flower child generation lives on.Themes of longing for love.the end to war, and the desire for peace are eternal.Needs an audience that came prepared to be engaged and give their energy and spirit back to the performers who fan out into the audience. Lucky for us, our audience rocked it!What a blast!! |

loved it - wish I could see it again! Review by: kris, Jan 17, 2010 |
| I just saw Hair yesterday. It is definitely one of my top theater experiences. I have always loved the music (grew up listening to the sound track and already knew all the words) and knew the basic story and I was blown away by how powerfully the cast brought it to life. There are moments of pure ebullient joy and moments of true pathos. Both were handled beautifully by an amazingly talented cast. |

Review by: DoctorJoeE, Jan 10, 2010 |
| Far out, groovy, right on -- peace & love, flower power, WWII was great, Vietnam was not so great -- yep, I get it. I get the message. I know what they're trying to say. The actors are great, the band is great...but I grew up during that era...and this production just doesn't capture the spirit, in my humble opinion. Call me old fashioned, but in theatre I like basic stuff -- plot -- story line -- character development -- none of that to be ... read more found here. We only learn that teenagers of all races and ethnic backgrounds rebelled against their parents' values in the '60s. Duh! Some revelation. Maybe that's enough for tourists -- and I suppose it is, since they continue to sell out the house. But it's not enough for me. If you're a tourist, by all means, go -- you'll want to sit up close, so you can go onstage at the end and dance for a couple of minutes. Whoopee-doo. |

Review by: Flagstaff, AZ Andrew, Jan 10, 2010 |
| I really wanted to like this show, however was very disappointed. The cast is very talented. The sound though was muddled. You couldn't understand half of what they were saying. There were 3 of us and we all agreed on the sound. Maybe there was a problem with the sound system the day we went. I really think I woul've loved it if I could of heard what they were saying. I love Rent, Spring Awakening, Next to Normal, etc... This was such a let down ... read more for me. |

A great play but not for those easily offended. Review by: theatre fan , Jan 3, 2010 |
| Terrific show. I read with partial amazement and some disbelief the review of this show written by broadwayBabySawIt,on or about December 12. 2009. Did she see a different show or was she simply to inept to appreciate the vitality and tongue in cheek humour of this terrific piece of broadway cutting edge history. The show is great and the performers young, vital and energizing. However, if one is easily shocked or has a less than open mind ... read more then perhaps they should consider a different piece of theatre, i.e. Mary Poppins. However, should one enjoy life and a look at one of the few shows which forever altered broadway history then go and enjoy. |

Hair hits hard with both joy and sadness Review by: Joey, Dec 31, 2009 |
| I was not exactly sure what to expect, and then, "BAM", I got hit over the head with one of the most moving pieces of theater I have ever seen. How can one show make you smile and glow from within one moment and then shed tears at the tragedy and sadness of it all? Hair manages to do both. The cast is so extremely talented that they are simply a joy to behold. My advice: See this show. Brilliant. Moving. Thank you all you wonderful ... read more cast members for giving the audience so much! |

A groundbreaking show! Review by: Gemma, Dec 14, 2009 |
| This is an absolutely wonderful show. I saw it in August with a group of friends and they all agreed with me. It allows you to experience all the emotions that one might expect to feel during that time period; uncertainty, rebellion, you name it. The set, lights, and acting create a fantastic dream-like mood. On a different note (in response to previous reviews), perhaps to avoid being offended by a show, it would be a good idea to research it ... read more first and actually find out if there's a possiblity that it might not be your style. Too many people go in completely clueless and ruin their own experience. Anything can happen in live theatre. If you don't like it, don't go at all. Hair should be praised for it's brave performance! |
