A Classic Musical-Broadway's Must See Review by: Broadway Scott, Jun 8, 2008 |
Had the chance to Bernadette Peters do this a couple of years ago--But Patti Lupone tore up the Stage as Mama Rose! Kudos to both Laura & Boyd, who both gave very dimensional performances in their own right. THIS IS THE MUST SEE OF THIS SEASON--for all fans of Classic Broadway!! All the kids in the show were very talented, like many of the stars of Annie--there will be a future Broadway Star in the group.

Gyspy Again? No this one is for the ages. Review by: rskblueyes, Jun 5, 2008 |
I have seen Gypsy on Broadway in 1989 & 2003, not to mention a fantastic production at the Paper Mill Playhouse starring Betty Buckley. The current Broadway production starring Patti Lupone outshines them all. Patti Lupone is back on broadway in the role she was born to play. Her portrayal brings out the multi-layered psyche of Rose. What really makes this production stand out is the performances Laura Bennetti and Boyd Gaines each one giving ... read more the performance of their careers. The Gotta Have A Gimmick number is staged for the maximum amount of laughs, especially from the performance of Electra. If you think you have seen Gypsy by seeing other productions, please dont miss this one, as ithas som much to offer |

hm not the type of "once in a lifetime experience" that they were going for Review by: wow, Jun 1, 2008 |
| this show was a flop for me. i didn't get the story and i just thought that it was very boring, atleast for the first half. then the second half was waayyy more interesting for the boy sitting next to me. i went with a school group and the whole time home we were wondering who approved this field trip. not a good show to bring kids to. there were middle schoolers on a trip there and they just seemed horrified by the whole thing. ... read more the singing was okay and the acting was alright but i just didn't get it. |

Expectations too high? Review by: Joe, May 29, 2008 |
I like the show but this production was not what I expected. I don't know, maybe Ms. Lupone had an off night? Her characterization was pretty one dimensional, I didn't get any nuances of the character. She just came across as bitter the whole way through, there should be whole lot of other things going on in Rose's head and they didn't make it off the stage. Her singing was competent, but not stunning. She missed a couple pitches, and there ... read more isn't really much excuse for that when performing at this level. Of course if the lead has a bad night the show has a bad night... Actually, the woman who played Louise both sang and acted better than Ms. Lupone and was the highlight of the show (sorry, don't have the program or remember her name). The guy that played Herbie was competent but not memorable. I guess over all it was not awful, just not as good as it could have been. |

A bit long and a bit boring Review by: jj, May 27, 2008 |
| Did not enjoy Gypsy. Just couldn't get into it. The singing was excellent but I did not enjoy the children doing the same bad skits over and over. I just don't get all the rave reviews. I went based on these recomendations and found it a bit long and a bit boring. Just looking at the reaction around me I would say there were many who loved the show but there were also quite a few who were waiting for the show to end. |

Great performance Review by: EL, May 24, 2008 |
| The acting was fantastic. Mama Rose, Herbie & Louise all came alive. The music was beautiful. I'm glad that I didn't bring my nine-year-old, though. It's definitely not a show for young children. |

NOT to be missed... Review by: Heights, May 2, 2008 |
If you can only see one show, Patti's Gypsy is the one to see. Performances like Patti in Gypsy come along only very rarely. Saw the City Center production twice & Broadway once & we're going again. The rest of the cast is great, especially Laura & Boyd. But, Gypsy is Rose's show & Patti is the best Rose ever. (Saw Bernadette [& love Bernadette]), but this is the part Patti has waited 30 years to play. I can't think of another show with ... read more both an Act I finale & an 11:00 number to rival Gypsy's & Patti nails them both. Gypsy is one of the all-time-great shows & there will never be a better Mama Rose than Patti. Do NOT Miss It. This is Patti's year for her 2nd Tony. |

This Gypsy is worth travelling from London to see - more than once! Review by: Steven, Apr 30, 2008 |
| I saw the new production of Gypsy on Friday 25th April and was totally blown away by it. It is definitely a must see show and features a performance by Patti LuPone that will be talked about for years to come. She is simply sensational. I had seen both the Ravinia and Encores productions so knew I was in for a treat. However, I wasn't prepared for the sheer intensity that the cast and director have managed to inject into this latest version. ... read more There are layers here that I have never seen in any other production of the show. LuPone's singing on 'You'll Never Get Away from Me' and 'Small World' is gorgeous. She is like a woman possessed in 'Everything's Coming up Roses'. The final number 'Rose's Turn' will stay with you long after you see the show. I have never seen any song performed with such intensity before. How any one does this 8 performances a week I do not know. LuPone deserves to win all major acting awards for her performance, and I say this having seen some of the main 'competition'. If she doesn't, there is something very wrong with the voting system! I travelled from London to see Gypsy and it was so good I will be doing so again in July with my family. Go see it too - you are in for a truly thrilling evening. |

Below-par Review by: bway , Apr 29, 2008 |
| All the hype about the show lead me to buy $100 tickets. Little did I know that the show wasn't nearly as good as my friends said it was. The story was confusing and the actors, with the exception of Laura Benanti who played Louise, without emotion, almost like deers in headlights. The set was also below-par. The music, however, was inspiring and soaring. Unfortunately, the music can't make up for this flop. |

Do. Not. Miss. This. Review by: Maggie O'Riley, Apr 24, 2008 |
Saw the Encores presentation, and couldn't wait to see the full production at the St. James. Everything great about the Encores production is still there; everything that seemed just a tiny bit off is now full-on, especially Patti LuPone's Mama Rose. Now that she's settled on just exactly who Rose is, LuPone creates a a far-more fleshed out figure than past productions. This is a Rose you can relate to as a person, so much so that when ... read more you begin to realize just how much she will--and won't--sacrifice to realize her skewed dreams, you find yourself wondering about your own ability to read people. Was this monster really there all along? How could I have missed that? She seemd so...normal. Not after "Rose's Turn". Unforgettable. Laura Benanti steals scene after scene, breaking your heart as the adolescent Louise, who yearns for attention and affection. She finds it, of course, as Gypsy Rose Lee; Benanti's portrayal of that transformation is both stunning and seductive. Laura Benanti has a long and illustrious career ahead of her. Having seen the production starring Bernadette Peters a few years ago, the one key difference--and this is huge--between that and this is the more egalitarian feel of the new production. With Peters in the starring role, the entire production revolved around the star; everyone else seemed to fade to a kind of shadow on the stage. You can't fault Peters for her performance vocally--she was a showstopper. But LuPone, even with her well-earned diva reputation, seems to be more than happy to let everyone else rise to their own heights, which brings new depth to this classic tale. If you never set foot in a Broadway theater again after seeing this production, you have nothing to worry about. You've seen a seminal moment in American Theater. Patti LuPone as Mama Rose is this generation's Laurette Taylor as Amanda Wingfield. Brava! |
