Very Enjoyable Show Review by: M&S, Mar 18, 2009 |
| Enjoyed this show from beginning to end. I would say the critics do not reflect the audience's appreciation for the material and the performances of the troupe of actors. All the singing was good to very good and the dancing was fine. I do agree that Oliver Platt does not have any dancing genes but he did bring a good voice to the part of Nathan and a different personna to the character. The supporting cast was generally good and the ... read more show stopper was Titus Burgess and Mary Testa's "Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat." But, there are a lot of memorable numbers in this show. This is a definitely enjoyable day at the theater. |

Good, fun show. Review by: John, Mar 15, 2009 |
| Once again, the critics are wrong. Guys and Dolls is a good, fun show. Except for one performer, the cast is excellent, especially Lauren Graham in her Broadway debut. Only problem for show is one of the leads, Oliver Platt. He can't dance or sing, and he "walks thru" the part like he is not even interested in being there. Completely miscast as Nathan Detroit. Except for him show is very good, and we would recommend it to anyone. |

Go see it! Review by: lmvw, Mar 14, 2009 |
| Don't be put off by gouchy critics--go see this show and have a blast. The leads are strong, especially Lauren Graham as Adelade, the music is gourgeous, the costumes and sets are amazing, the choreography is crisp and innovative, and the lead voices are strong. Go see it! |

Nodding out! Review by: Kitty, Mar 14, 2009 |
| The show was very boring. The actors performance was flat; no pizazz. The only positive I could offer is the staging of the set. The show is long and tedious. The second act was better then the first because of a booming song "Don't Rock the Boat". Do not waste your money. |

Review by: Joan, Mar 12, 2009 |
| I saw the production opening night and found it most enjoyable. I loved the dance sequences, which were very exciting. The music is lovely and for the most part the leads do justice to them. The principal players were outstanding - Big Jule, Nicely-Nicely, Mary Testa, etc. The sets, a bit overdone, were interesting as was the screen at the back of the stage which helped to set the atmosphere. I di feel that Oliver Platt lacked a little pizazz, ... read more bt all in all it is a wonderful night in the theatre. |

Great show, just what we need in these times! Review by: Lorie, Mar 12, 2009 |
| This show was such a joy to see. I saw the March 11th matinee and along with the rest of the audience gave it a standing ovation. The show is filled with wonderful music and sooo... many laughs. Having seen the original Broadway production of Guys and Dolls I knew what to expect and was not disappointed. Oliver Platt and Lauren Graham were outstanding playing in totally different type rolls than I'd seen them play before. Who knew ... read more they could sing! "Sit Down, Sit Down, You're Rockin The Boat" was the knock out production number of the show. But there was nothing about the show I did not like. Wonderful afternoon at the theater. Go...Enjoy... |

Thoroughly Enjoyable Review by: BillyElliotFan, Mar 9, 2009 |
| I thought the critics were way off base on this one. I bought tickets before it opened and the when the reviews came out, I thought it was going to be a dud. However, I really enjoyed the entire production. The opening sequence was terrific, and set the pace for the rest of the show. The cast was uniformly excellent. Oliver Platt played Nathan Detroit as a bit of a numbskull, but I thought he did an excellent job. Both Kate ... read more Jennings Grant and Lauren Graham had beautiful voices. I've been a fan of Craig Bierko for awhile, and this was a great part for him--a charming rascal. The choreography was incredible--amazingly talented dancers. I went last Sat evening, and the house was full, and the audience very responsive and enthusiastic. It deserves to be hit and I know people will really enjoy it. And the music can't be beat! |

Review by: George S.K., Mar 1, 2009 |
We know Guys & Dolls is a great musical, perhaps better than Gypsy. But why is anyone going to spend $126.50 to see this production? The erector set set is influenced by the just ended Pal Joey, Steel columns. The back projections only remind us of the star-studded film. And confuse the issue. Is this theater or film. Damon Runyon as a presence on stage. Heavy-handed? Or just reaching for a needle in a haystack for a touch of originality ... read more in a musical almost every American high school student has seen at one time. The costumes may be cheap, but they also lack wit and imagination. And all those light bulbs on the set? "Razzle dazzle them and they'll think you're a star." Thank you Fred Ebb. But the criminal in this musical, is not the mis-directed Oliver Platt. The the engaging, but sex-less Craig Bierko. Or the struggling Sister Sarah or the delightful Miss Adelaide. No, the man to blame would be the director who guides the show like a plasterer using a trowel. Not an ounce of subtly or wit or genuine humor. And the dance-numbers? Mostly devoid of imagination, style or sophisticated. Guys and Dolls is a witty, smart, sophisticated musical. People will see it on Broadway to see how it's done. Not like a high school or local theater production but how the big guys do it. The only lesson in this version is raise your ticket price and the show be damned. |

One of the Best Girls Night Out in a While- "Long Review" Review by: Melissa F., Feb 26, 2009 |
I had one of the best nights out last night (2/25) thanks to Lauren, Oliver, Craig, Kate and cast! I loved every moment of the show! This is going to be a tiny bit long…We did not get a warm-up speech from the director, as the show opens up in a few days officially so they may have worked all the kinks out. The Actors put on an impressive show, the singing was strong, the acting was strong, and the dancing was VERY remarkable! ... read more I laughed a lot and I never thought I would be able to get myself as deep into a show like this as I did with “Guys and Dolls”. My only problem was Oliver Platt seems a little "stiff", I do not know if that is a requirement for the role or if that is where he is taking his adaptation of Mr. Detroit, so Mr. Platt, loosen it up a little and speak a tiny bit clearer! Ms. Graham, when she first opened her mouth to sing, I was expecting something totally different, something like a less polished version of someone trying out for American Idol, BUT boy was I wrong, as she got into the show, she was strong and a stage presence to be reckoned with! Every time she delivered a line it was always a laugh riot, I have not seen any prior versions of Guys and Dolls, so I don’t know how other people played this role, but I think she held her own, and did well for being known more dominantly as a TV/Movie actress. I don’t know if at one point Ms. Graham flubbed her line, but she seemed like at one point she was speaking “robot” in order to kick start her memory to deliver the line. Ms. Grant has a big voice for such a tiny person; she steals the show when she is on stage. I only knew Mr. Bierko from Scary Movie 4 and was quite blown away with his skills on the stage; he has a strong voice, he is just an awesome all around package! The supporting roles were great at doing just that, but Mr. Burgess and Ms. Testa won the award for the “Best Moment of the Night” with their version of “Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat”. One last thing, the back screen isn’t that much of a distraction, but the graphics that are being used could be better, it looks like a five year old was playing on a toy computer, I would think you’re a Broadway Production with four “big” name actors, and you have them on a stage with a horrible CGI background, I don’t see how that adds up! I've read around on the net about this show, and I am not going to lie, I really only saw this because I am a Lauren Graham fan and scored very good seats for a very friendly price, but I realized a lot of people are going into this show with "pre-judgments" due to this being their favorite show etc. etc, people just need to go into this with an open mind and they'll be blown away! So thank you Guys and Dolls for a wonderful evening, I will for sure be going back again VERY soon!!

Was Hesitant, But Was Surprisingly Pleased Review by: Bob, Feb 25, 2009 |
| I saw the February 14th matinee. I was hesitant to see this production because I love the show and was unsure about any of the stars cast in the main roles. I was pleasantly surprised. All 4 did very well with their characterizations and performances. The show was very entertaining. "Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat" was exceptional. It was the perfect "11th hour song," and should earn Nicely-Nicely a Tony nomination for supporting actor. ... read more I recommend the show for anyone who enjoys classic musical comedies. |

Review by: Jo T, Feb 25, 2009 |
| We went to see guys&dolls today not knowing what expect. What we got was a great production that put alot of hard work& thought& detail to make this show there own & there audience happy. The sets, costumes, choreography, orchestrations and supporting cast are great, not to say the 4 stars of the show are not good they just need a more WOW.Lauren Graham who plays Adelaide is 1 of the actors who seems to be a little stiff.Im assuming she is trying to ... read more play the role a little differently which is great but it comes off at times like she is nervous or uncomfortable, and she needs to play the role a little bigger for the stage this is not TV.Anyway go see this show its great & and i would go see it again. |
