Very interesting..... Review by: , Nov 18, 2006 |
It's amazing that after reading the reviews people either loved it or hated it.
For me, although a musical, it played more like a drama, thought provoking and moving. Christine Ebersole is phenomenal in this role, and the entire cast is very good. This show is not for everyone, but to say it is like a high school performance is ridiculous. Not liking it is one thing, let's be real here.
Thought the second act dragged a bit, ... read more so think about whether a show like this is for you or not. I liked it. |

GO! SEE! REFLECT! Review by: AuntieF, Nov 15, 2006 |
| Put a PLAYBILL in my hands and I'll see anything! So, I was not expecting anything but a pleasant day in the city and at the theatre! Boy was I wrong! The show just blew me away. I was so totally impressed by the leads, that I actually felt as if it were really the 1940's and then the 1970's. Most people, whether they would admit it or not, can identify to some degree withe the familial conflict portrayed! Most of us never hadthis degree ... read more of conflict, but all I could think during intermission was "there for the grace of God..." Go see the the show and think a little of how everything we experience influences us! |

GET TICKETS NOW!! Ebersole and Wilson are the BEST PERFORMANCES ON BROADWAY! Review by: Jimmyboyis40, Nov 13, 2006 |
| Grey Gardens brings the magic of the musical back to Broadway. Christine Ebersole gives the finest performance of an actress I HAVE EVER SEEN!! See it for the fine performances by both Ms. Ebersole and Ms. Wilson. Unbelievable! You will both laugh and cry. AN AMAZING THEATER EXPERIENCE! See it with the original cast - you will LOVE it! |

Review by: rskblueyes, Nov 12, 2006 |
| This show was an amazing experience. It was refreshing to see an innovative show that didnt have to rely on scenary or special effects to make it a worthwhile and must see show. The cast was amazing. Christine Ebersole's performance in both acts will go down in Musical Theatre history. Mary Louise Wilson performance in act 2 matches Ms. Ebersole's!. The score was fresh and original, Act 1 was in the style of Cole Porter and ... read more act 2 was much like Sondheim. I had recenly seen the movie Grey Gardens and it was amazing that both actress captured the look and mannerism of the real Big Edie and Little Edie. I felt the 1st act did actually set up the story and gives the audience the background of their Love-hate realtionship. Go so this show!!! |

You're Entering GREY GARDENS Review by: notabb, Oct 31, 2006 |
| What an amazing show. The story of the fall of Jackie Kennedys aunt and niece from high society to strange recluses. After a brief prologue in the 70's the rest of the first act is GREY GARDENS in it's heyday and the slightly twisted relationship between Big Edie and Little Edie. Act 2 shows their lives after the fall. Christine Ebersole ,Mary Louise Wilson , Bob Stillman and the rest of the cast give magnificent performances. The score is great ... read more .Special mention to my 3 favorite songs THE 5:15 , WILL YOU? and ANOTHER WINTER. I highly recommend this show! |

Fantastic Show Review by: Doc, Oct 29, 2006 |
What a great show! Granted, it is unlikely to appeal to the average theatre tour group looking for a feel-good musical. However, those in search of something a bit different that tells a powerful story of mental illness, codependency, family skeletons, etc., somehow adding a dose of comedy, it will not disappoint. It goes without saying that Christine Ebersole deserves serious consideration for the Tony. However, the rest of the cast is ... read more excellent as well, especially considering that several of them are relative newbies to Broadway, yet they don't fade when Ebersole is on the stage.
The music in the show is good, but the characters and their emotions drive the production. It's nice to see a musical that stands on its writing and acting rather than the traditional fluff in between the "show-stopper" numbers.
I'd recommend seeing the documentary DVD before seeing the show, if only to appreciate how amazingly well the characters are portrayed on the stage. |

amazing Review by: folkyboy, Oct 26, 2006 |
Christine Ebersole will totally blow you away in this performance! Every nuance of her character's sharp characteristics and pain rip right through you. This really blew me away so many times...
Granted, I could see a majority of the audience was a bit lost at the times but I suspect this was because they failed to read the insert in their playbills about these women on stage. Or that they didn't see the film it was based upon.
But ... read more I don't necessarily think it's a requirement to see the movie to experience what a wonderful story this is. The whole first act is fictitious based upon stories relayed from the Beales during various interviews. Yet you would probably identify more with the first act's storyline than the second, as I did. As the second act is really just a re-telling of the movie (with songs).
I just can't tell you enough how exemplarity this cast is, however. Really outstanding all around! It even made me forget my big theatre pet peeve: projections. I could’ve done without the cats being projected onto the back wall. But hey, would YOU want to be a cat wrangler for this show?

Saw it again Review by: Howaluna, Oct 12, 2006 |
| Saw it again last night. What a great piece of work. Christine Ebersole and Mary-Louise Wilson are just incredible. The second act just sucks you in. I forget about everything but the show during that act. Great musical numbers and the music is wonderful. I can't wait to see it again. |

Go! Review by: Chuck, Oct 9, 2006 |
| Seen it twice. Christine Ebersole's performance is a tour de force highly skilled musical theatre performance, and Mary Louise Wilson is once again fantastic in her subtlety and musicality and timeing and truth. Let's hear it for something different. Something un-Disney. Something complex and quirky and a little mysterious. I'm going a third time. |

BAD BAD BAD Review by: lynn325, Oct 7, 2006 |
| After hearing all of the rave reviews I ordered tickets for the Broadway version. I watched the DVD (boring), listened to the CD (more boring), and tried to go to the show with an open mind. I found it difficult staying awake during the first act. During the second act, a tall guy sat in front of me so I couldn't see much of the show (row M), it was freezing cold in the theater, and I couldn't wait for it to end. The songs were not memorable,... read more, the acting was blah, and the book was awful. It has made my list of 10 worst musicals. |

A perfect 10 worth seeing over and over! Review by: Bigken, Oct 5, 2006 |
What a performance. Broadway as Broadway should be! Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson were the exact copies of the Beales as they were in the 1975 Documentary. I had seen the DVD of the documentary last month for the first time, and then listened to CD right after that(which I reccommend that everyone should do), and could not wait for the show to begin. I went the first night of previews. And it did not let me down! ... read more The acting, the staging, the sets were top notch and the delightfully haunting music stayed with me as I left the theatre. I plan on seeing it again. |

GREY GARDENS, OLD WOMEN, and CATS! Review by: RALPHIE, Oct 4, 2006 |
The events portrayed in GREY GARDENS are an interesting footnote in history, but amount to very little as a full sized Broadway musical. Both actresses did just fine but neither was worthy of the exceptional praise heaped on them by the always-questionable New York press. There were one or two halfway decent songs and a few good jokes. That's it, for your $111.25. You also get the customary lesson in Diversity. In a nutshell, the show is just OK.... read more. NOthing to rave about; but recommended so long as somebody else is paying and the better shows are sold out. PS: For a show with 52 cats, there ought to have been at least one honest-to-God cat in the show. The feline actor that played Wee Thomas in Lieutenant of Inishmore is temporarily out-of-work and might have been employed here. Better still, as a lesson in Diversity, why not have three or four real cats, each a different breed? |

Mother-daughter Eccentrics Big Edie and Little Edie Beale Review by: Howaluna, Oct 4, 2006 |
Grey Gardens What a talented cast of performers. I was in awe during the show. I went with a friend that I had given the DVD documentary of Grey Gardens to. He said at the end of the show, “my expectations were 10. Act one rated 9. There were several new songs added that were not on the soundtrack. Act two rated 11 out of 10. I agreed with him completely. Make sure you see the DVD Documentary before the show. It will give you an insight ... read more to just how great the cast is. They deserve a big applause and a standing ovation (which they got) for their performances! Grey Gardens, Fantastic!
