Amazing performances by two talented women Review by: newyork10r, Jun 12, 2007 |
Saw this show within the first month of its opening.
The performances of the two lead women: Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson - transformed this material into something larger than it really is.
I was skeptical that writers could fashion a coherent book and libretto from the Grey Gardens source material but what transpired in front of my eyes surprised, delighted and affected me.
The show, especially the inherent ... read more humor, will be more apparent if you've seen the Grey Gardens documentary. You'll understand why Christine Ebersole's performance is so amazing. But even if you haven't seen the original movie, the show is a great portrait of a complicated, dysfunctional relationship between a mother and a daughter that in the end is about a strong bond of love between the two women. Throughout the show,I had a great time, but kept wondering, where and how does the show wrap up? The answer left me deeply affected.
The show is quite enjoyable and worth a trip to see. |

Original musicals are still in existence on Broadway! Review by: brenna, Jun 10, 2007 |
I am so glad I got a chance to see this before the tony awards. I have seen the documentary three times and had seen Christine perform "Revolutionary Costume of the Day" on the Drama Desk Awards, and wanted to see the show when it was off Broadway. The performance I saw yesterday afternoon did not feature Ms. Ebersole, but Maureen Moore, her understudy, who was FANTASTIC. Mary Louise Wilson captured the Big Edie character spot on in Act 2,... read more, both vocally and physically.
I recommend seeing the 1975 documentary before seeing the musical. It's available through Netflix. |

Not for Broadway Novices Review by: Debbie, Jun 5, 2007 |
| Although the story made me want to know more about this eccentric woman and her mother, I thought the long dramatic pauses were not necessary. Its a good show, but doesn't involved the whole cast enough. Christine Ebersole is a great comedic actress, but I'm disappointed that I didn't see more of her funny side. Debbie |

A Wonderful and Touching Show Review by: Dean, May 27, 2007 |
| I debated which show to see because I had limited time. I am very glad I chose "Grey Gardens". This show is a true gem. A touching story both funny and sad with wonderful music and lyrics. Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson are terrific . This has to be one of the best on Broadway. |

Brilliant. Review by: wdk921, May 25, 2007 |
Wow. I saw Grey Gardens last night, and it was possibly one of the best shows I've ever seen. I think it is easily the best show on Broadway, everything is wonderful: the music, the book, the cast. A great night at the theatre.
Run, don't walk, to the wonder that is Grey Gardens! |

Moving, funny and DARK Review by: Battery Jim, May 15, 2007 |
Christine Ebersole gave one of the best performances I've ever seen in a musical. I can't imagine her not winning the Tony.
The play itself was fascinating and, for a musical, very dark. It was very intelligently written and very enjoyable. The music wasn't great and I wonder if this could have been more powerful as a straight play.
Overall, though, well worth seeing. |

THIS SHOW IS A BRILLIANT MUST SEE!!! Review by: partialview, May 15, 2007 |
Christine Ebersole is giving the performance of a lifetime -- both hers and ours!!! -- in this rich, touching and beautiful original and compelling musical.
YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!
And p.s. -- note to the boob below: this show was not eligible for this year's Drama Desk and Outer Critic's Circle awards because it started last year off Broadway and WON!!! |

RUN and see this gem of a show. Review by: Rob, May 14, 2007 |
I attended the May 9th show, and found this to be one of the most subtle, beautiful shows I have seen in a long time. If anyone has ever cared for an eldery parent, it will rip your heart out.
It was not 'shut out' of the Drama Desk Awards as previously mentioned here. It won many Drama Desk awards last year for its off broadway run. If Christine Ebersole doesnt win the Tony this year, I will be shocked. Having seen the documentary ... read more and found it to be camp but without much substance, and now the musical, I am amazed how there were able to create this gem of show, out of that nothing of a documentary. |

In response to JonnyBGude's post below...
"A production at Playwrights Horizons in New York City opened to mixed reviews, but attracted particularly good reviews for its stars, Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson. It earned five Lucille Lortel Award nominations and twelve Drama Desk Award nominations. The show played from 10 February 2006 until 30 April 2006, and opened, with some revisions, on Broadway on November 2, 2006 ... read more at the Walter Kerr Theatre, where it is currently playing. The Off-Broadway cast album was released on 22 August 2006. The Original Broadway Cast album was released on March 27, 2007 through PS Classics.
Christine Ebersole received the Obie Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, a Special Citation from the New York Drama Critics, and the Drama League Award for Performance of the Year for her dual roles of Edith and Edie Beale in the Off-Broadway production of Grey Gardens.
The Broadway production was acclaimed on over 25 "Best of 2006" lists in newspapers and magazines (ie: Entertainment Weekly, USA Today, New York Times). Time Magazine recognized Grey Gardens as the #1 show of 2006."
Grey Garden's couldnt have been nominated for Drama Desk Awards thie year as it was already nominated last year. You see, a show cannot be nominated 2 years in a row. I'm pretty sure Grey Garden's will get atleast 5 Tony nominations this year. We'll find out Tuesday though.
I would hardly say the show is irrelevant. While the first Act is definately not as strong as the second, it's definately not boring. Christine Ebersole is giving one of the best performances Broadway has seen in years. Check out the documentary and give the show a second chance. I'm not saying that Grey Gardens is a show for everyone, because it's not. But maybe next time before you post a bad review of a show you should do a little research or atleast read your playbill. I haven't read Christine Ebersole's bio lately, but i'm gonna pretty much guarantee that she mentions the plus 5 awards she got for playing the same part last year.
I saw the show when it was Off-Broadway. I know there were a few changes made to the Broadway run and from what I have heard they were for the better. If you enjoy seeing a show that's not as mainstream as say Hairspray or Wicked, then go see the show. If you're looking for a good night of lighthearted theatre then don't see this. CHeck out The Drowsy Chaperone or Mary Poppins instead. |

Horrible Review by: JonnyBGude, May 12, 2007 |
| This play was downright borring, incoherent, and irrelevant. Please, don't waste your time - there are so many better shows out there. It was recently shut-out for Drama Desk Award Nominatons (where it seems as if every new musical gets nominated for at least five things) and for good reasons. |

Very grey Grey Gardens Review by: ck, May 4, 2007 |
| You should only go to this show if you want to walk away depressed. The music borders on opera and is redundant. There are very few characters and most are undeveloped and serve as pure background, feeling like a cheap trick. One character appears in the final act whose motivation remains a mystery. I couldn't wait to get out of the theater. |
