Lifeless mess. Review by: frankb, Aug 16, 2008 |
I saw this show 8-13 2pm matinee, got standing room for $31.50. That is one of the few positive things I can say about "Grease". The show is lifeless and dull, it is built around a few decent, catchy songs. The singing and dancing never really catch fire. The dialogue is inane, most of the cast is too old to be believed as high schoolers. This is the third time around for this show, I'll never understand how it's always a hit, ... read more when it's so bad. This is strictly for the tourist set, no true theatre lover could tolerate this mess. Skip it at all costs. |

Grease - unappealing Review by: Vir, Aug 16, 2008 |
| I was in NYC 08-05 = 08-08 We went to see Grease..... I can honestly say it was the worst show I have ever seen in my 40 years of seeing live performances. The producers, directors and most actors were so amateur that I believe my high school productions were better prepared. I am totally flabbergasted at the lack of continuity, adaptation, congruity and talent. The poor girl playing Sandy - Ashley Spencer - I actually did ... read more feel sorry for her. Her voice is not Broadway quality at all. Thank the heavens for Taylor Hicks, with out the highlight of his small roll the whole thing would have been totally dismal. and Derek Keeling - Robyn Hurder - Jeb Brown good jobs. My suggestion would be to write Teen Angel, (Taylor Hicks) into the first act some how. At least there would be something to look forward to. Thanks for taking my complaint |

New Danny and Sandy - Can't wait to see it again!! Review by: , Jul 30, 2008 |
| I went to see this show this weekend with my husband and some friends and we had a great time!. The new Sandy and Danny (Derek Keeling and Ashley Spencer) had great chemistry onstage. Kirsten Wyatt was so much fun as Frenchie and I can't say enough about Janine Devita as Rizzo - she has a womderful voice and great moves!! Taylor Hicks as the Teen Angel was perfect in this part - he had the audience in the palm of his hands. ... read more Although the story flow was a little sketchy, it appeared the cast interacted really well with each other especially during the finale and the band above the stage was really rocking it out. Superb energy throughout the show. I will go and see this again and again!! Beautiful intimate theatre. |

AMAZING!!! Review by: , Jul 30, 2008 |
| I saw this show twice, that's how much I loved it. I saw it first when it was premiering and then when it was in full blown. I loved it, I thought that they cast perfectly. Especially Danny Zuko (Max Crumm), hes amazing, and I love him. The whole time during the show I was dancing in my seat. The show was overall a must see. |

"The Worst Thing I could do" Review by: Poppins35, Jul 28, 2008 |
After being in "Grease" in high school, directing two productions of it at my local high school, seeing it when it was on Broadway with Rosie O'Donnell, I was excited to see it return to Broadway once again. My affinity for "Grease" started when I was thirteen and never seemed to leave until I saw this production. This production is not "one that I want." The chemistry between Danny and Sandy lacks. The set design is confusing regarding the ... read more time. Rizzo was not effective as the character should be. Cha Cha should cha cha right off the stage and stay in the wings. The score itself is indeed timeless; however, the singers butchered the score to points where the trained ear squirmed in agony. Then there was the teen angel -- WHO WOULD EXPECT THE TEEN ANGEL TO DESCEND FROM AN ICE CREAM CONE?!! Ugghh. I am a "hopelessly devoted" fan of "Grease", but seeing this production was "the worst thing I could do." |

Disappointed Review by: jessica, Jul 16, 2008 |
| Disappointed! I live in NY and have seen several shows, this is definitely at the bottom of the list. The language was really unnecessary, I was embarrassed to have kids there with them saying F***. Wouldn't go back. |

Mom and Teen on June 25 Review by: D and A, Jun 26, 2008 |
After being bombarded with Grease for nearly 20 years, I gave into my teenagers angst to see the show especially with her favorite Idol, Taylor Hicks; we saw the Wednesday matinee on June 25 (We have seen every musical on Broadway for the past 4 years except for Grease till yesterday). Much to her utter disappointment, Hicks did not appear and we got a very good understudy, but for nearly $100/per ticket; we wanted and hoped to see Hicks.... read more. As for the show whether he was in it or not, the show has no charm or magic. The acting and dancing are fine but not spectacular. The sets are minimal and a step up from a high production. The gal who played Frenchie had spark but the 2 leads were bland. I continually found myself glancing at my watch in anticipation of the show's finale. Addtionally, Grease is clearly a show for out of towners and people who rarely go to Broadway shows: these folks need to learn theater etiquette and stop having incessant conversations during the show and provide running commentaries to their seatmates. We must have "shooshed" a group of 4 chatty women in back of us several times who wouldn't stop yaking for the 2+ hours and the father in front of us had to interpret every scene for his 5 year. old. This was completely distracting and annoying. If you are a Grease fanatic, then go, if you want a terrific musical theater experience, then go to South Pacific, Phantom, Hairspray or something else with spark!!! |

Very Entertaining, especially after reading some of these reviews beforehand! Review by: Kelly in Katy, Jun 23, 2008 |
| I went to see Grease in the Saturday matinee and loved it! Have I seen better made Broadway shows? yes Have I heard better singers? Yes. Luckily, I read these reviews before I went so I was not shocked that the play didn't follow the movie. But based on these reviews, I was scared to go! Well, I was pleasantly surprised! There was no cigarette smell, no cameras flashing - not even one. I thought Danny was great and a very good dancer. Laura ... read more Osnes was on vacation, but the second runner-up in the reality show, the blonde Allie Schulz, was Sandy and she was great. She definitely held her own and her voice was amazing. The highlight truly was Taylor Hicks' performance. I always liked Taylor anyway, but I was shocked at how good he was not just vocally, but he was funny and really got into it. When he brought out his harmonica, the audience went wild. He even did the hand jive at the end! I wish he would have been in it more! I wish the story did follow the movie and include all of the songs. All in all, my whole party really enjoyed Grease and I definitely recommend it! |

Disappointing! Review by: , Jun 9, 2008 |
The good: The music was great......Taylor Hicks playing as Frankie V was great.... Now the bad: The scenes were not in order.....Danny Z was not good at all..... They had a Diner scene instead of the amusement park...Danny Z never tore off the white prepy sweater....Sandy did not have blonde hair....She was acutally scary looking.... I would not recommend this play to anyone to see.

Good show Review by: mom2brittanyandcaleb, Jun 7, 2008 |
My children wanted to see the American Idol Taylor Hicks, so my husband and I took them last night which was opening night for him. Hicks' performance was spectacular. We all enjoyed watching him. Quite honestly, his role was what made the play great. If he wasn't in it, the play would have been average. I do have some complaints. As avid theatre goers, my husband and I were very disappointed in the number of camera flashes that ... read more were going off. This was unlike anything we have seen before on Broadway. When Hicks came on, women were taking pictures, standing up and walking around, and being loud. Perhaps this was a special group of mentally challenged women. I don't want to judge, but if this was the case, the chaperone of the group should have informed them of Broadway etiquette and prepared them for how to act when attending a play. It was very distracting and disrespectful to the theatre goers as well as to the cast. |

Uninsprired Review by: LinMG, Jun 2, 2008 |
| Seeing GREASE is always fun, but the play was just okay. I was kind of disappointed, usually when you see a broadway show...it knocks your socks off. This didn't. The music is great and the band conductor and band are amazing and fun to watch. The two leads (Sandy and Danny) are decent singers, but I don't feel that their voices or dancing are lead actor material. The girl who played Rizzo was spectacular. I had a good time, but felt ... read more like I was watching a good high school production. With the fun songs from GREASE, I though the audience would be very "in to it". I have been to shows where the audience was up and dancing by the end. For the ticket price, I want to be that inspired! Band, conductor, Rizzo = A+++ Rest of the cast = C Finally, this play proves just how awesome Travolta and Olivia Newton John in the roles. Beyond comparison. |

Overall enjoyable Review by: , May 28, 2008 |
| My 12-year old daughter wanted to see this as she loves the story and music and watched Max and Laura get voted on the TV show to be Danny and Sandy. Based on the reviews here I wasn't expecting too much. However, it is a fun and enjoyable play. Personally, I thought Laura did a very good job and has a great voice. I thought Max was out of his league, he tried but I thought some of the supporting actors were better. The orchestra being on ... read more top of the stage is an added bonus. I wouldn't see this 2x but for a fun family show with discounted tickets, it's enjoyable. |

Disappointed Review by: , May 8, 2008 |
I am an avid theater fan and very much a Grease fan. So when my husband bought us tickets I just could not wait to watch it! Well, I was disappointed with this play to say the least. Not only did the smell of the cigarettes make me sick but I found that the acting was poor. Although Sandy has a very nice voice I felt that it was lost when singing in a group. The T-birds made me laugh because of how silly they appeared. To ... read more make matters worse Sandy and Danny had no chemistry on stage. Though I understand that they cannot make the play exactly like the movie, I did expect a better adaptation of it. If you love the movie Grease then you should go see it but I warn you, you may be disappointed. If you can try to get tickets to another show. |
