The show to see Review by: Robert, Oct 31, 2011 |
| I brought some friends to Godspell and we were amazed how a revival can keep the integrity of the original show yet be updated to fit into todays messages. The cast was energetic and so confortable in the roll that made the audience be pulled into the show. The interaction with the staging and sharing of wine at intermission on stage with the cast was a great treat. We are looking forward to seeing the show again. |

Godspell - A Fresh, Young, Hip Production Back on Broadway! Review by: doug, Oct 29, 2011 |
| Godspell is a timeless show and yet continues to evolve and grow with each new production. Back on Broadway after 30+ years - you will be treated to a classic with a fresh twist. Circle in the Square Theatre provides for a uniquely intimate audience experience for a Broadway house. Lighting is magnificent and dazzling and the young cast seems to effortlessly tell the parables thru dialogue and with an updated energized score of the classic tunes.... read more. Beautifully staged, brilliantly lit and well acted - it will delight those who have seen it before, and those who are seeing it for the first time alike! |

WOW!!!! Review by: Broadway Fan 18, Oct 28, 2011 |
| I caught a preview and was I ever impressed! The inventiveness and freshness of this show is unparalleled. It's both current and timeless and both hysterically funny and heart-wrenchingly moving. The cast is amazingly talented. For me, a special shoutout to Wallace Smith, who plays Judas. He is just plain phenomenal (and not bad to look at either). The direction is tight, so there's never a dull moment--and there are lots of surprises (of ... read more which I will give away none). I can't wait to see it again and again. |

Godspell is Glorious Review by: Auds, Oct 24, 2011 |
Was not sure what to expect from this revival but it did not disappoint. The music, the acting, the scenery were as fresh as ever. They modernized it by adding jokes, dance numbers and dialogues appropriate for the year 2011. The actors, expecially Hunter Parrish, who played Jesus, were lively, funny and very talented. The crucifixion scene at the end, brought me to tears. If you want to see a show that will lift your spirits in these ... read more troubled times, go and see Godspell. You'll be glad you did! |

Feel the joy and love at Godpsell Review by: broadwayfrannyk, Oct 21, 2011 |
| We saw Godspell last night and I am happy to report that the show exhibits freshness and updates while retaining the warmth and excitement from the original. The lead is sweet and really connects with his people. The ensemble cast is amazing and works well together.Their exhuberance is contagious. I really liked the circle in the round theatre and loved the members of the orchestra being in the seats with us, especially because I was right ... read more behing the guitar player and I could see what song was up next. This is a show about love and it doesn't matter what religion you are. Go laugh, smile and feel the joy. Yes, the stage is sparse but it is exactly what this show calls for. Know what you will be seeing. This is not a major full blown Broadway musical with an 18 piece orchestra and a cast of 40.This is a great show that has something for everyone and an intimacy that is rarely found on Broadway. I loved it as a young adult and could go back and see why I loved it then and looked for new things that I noticed this time around. Go see Godspell. |

So funny.....I haven't laughed that hard in a long time! Review by: annie, Oct 20, 2011 |
| This Godspell revival is cleverly updated, totally fresh and fun. There were so many hilarious lines and bits that my face hurt from smiling and laughing all night. The pacing of each number was brisk and there was always something interesting going on all over the stage. The ensemble cast worked very well together, morphing into different characters from each parable in extremely creative, inventive ways of using their voices and bodies.... read more. The staging and lighting of the show overall was impressive and I liked how they put the musicians in the corners of house, sitting in the audience. I also liked the way we could always see audience members while watching the show, since the stage is surrounded by the audience in this theater. I thought the actor who played Jesus had just the right look and presence while being funny, honest, and sweet. All in all, this is a show that anyone should be able to relate to and thoroughly enjoy. I'll be back with friends! |

Great! Review by: Susan D, Oct 19, 2011 |
| Awesome show, great voices. i'm a bit biased because I loved the show to begin with, but there were a few jokes in there for people like me who love the old show but can accept a 'modern' version. Can't wait to go back and see how it's changed after it opens! |

So fresh, so fun. Very unique for Broadway Review by: sally b, Oct 18, 2011 |
This is a fabulous revival and does the original GODSPELL proud. It is the most fun in Broadway theater we have had in years. The cast, led by the adorable and very moving, Hunter Parrish of WEEDS fame, is so inventive and talented. There is not a cookie cutter Broadway type among them, and their support and love for one another (even while they are being off the charts wacky) is palpable. By the end I felt I had come to know and care about each ... read more and every one of them. Not having a real set is not the producers being cheap, it is the intention of the play, to see actors transform simple things, themselves, into a community of friends who care about each other and what happens next in their lives. Very refreshing. See it. |

A Theatre Experience Not To Be Missed! Review by: AvidActor13, Oct 17, 2011 |
| My family and I went in not knowing what to expect from a revival of "Godspell" and we were blown away! This group of artists have put together an incredible theatrical experience. From the insanely talented cast to the beautiful staging, this show far exceeded our expectations. The show is fresh, fun, and incredibly moving. "Godspell" is this season's MUST see hit! We're already picking a date to head back to the city to see it again! |

Sigh. Review by: ShockedStudent, Oct 16, 2011 |
I completely agree with the earlier reviews on this sit. This show is for the strongly religious. It felt like a 2.5 hour church concert for which you had to pay (yes, there were no sets etc, though there was some interesting use of stage space). I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight because I'd be thinking of how that's money I'll never see again. Sure, there were parts that were funny, but it just doesn't feel like a Broadway show. ... read more It feels like a high school musical, or a church concert. I found myself rolling my eyes a few times, and during the intermission, the person next to me asked if I liked it so far and I said I was underwhelmed - he agreed. He said he really wanted to like it (I did too). So here are two disappointed theatre-goers strongly wanting the show to succeed, but it doesn't even reach the level of an off-broadway production. "Jesus" was overacting... but the voices were good. Spend your money on something like How to Succeed in Business instead. Definitely not deserving of its Broadway status (and ticket prices).

Best Godspell I've ever seen Review by: Marcia J, Oct 16, 2011 |
Godspell is probably the show that I've seen the most times, ever. I never miss an opportunity to catch it when performed locally (I'm from PA), and when I heard it was coming back to Broadway I bought tickets for the first weekend, expecting to see the best version ever. It did not disappoint! This production of Godspell is fresh, exciting, and unlike any I've ever seen. The cast is so talented - I hadn't heard of any of them before, ... read more but their voices and performances will definitely put them on the map. The music has never sounded better - it was more modern, and with these performers singing the songs sounded brand new. If you want to see the definitive production of Godspell, this is it. I left the theater happier than I have been in a long time. My seven year old granddaughter loved it too! |

Terrible Revival Review by: Chris, Oct 15, 2011 |
A revival of Godspell started its preview performances on October 14, 2011 at the Circle in the Square Theater in Manhattan. I had the extreme displeasure of seeing this new production on October 15, 2011. Godspell probably had been produced by more church groups, high schools, and colleges than most musicals that have ever been made. It has been said that the story is “the greatest story ever told” -- it’s the story of the Gospel of St. ... read more Matthew from the Bible. The music from the original production is classic. With such fantastic material, one can only speculate why the current bow of Godspell is such an unmitigated dud. In an attempt to “update” this musical, the producers overwhelmed the sweet Bible story with rap music and pathetically sophomoric one line jokes about Donald Trump, Charlie Sheen, and the current protesters who are in New York City. If the story of the musical were not so well known, it is questionable whether the audience would have realized that this is more than a “two-bit” variety show. Looking at the production values, or lack thereof, the first thing that should be noted is that there is no appreciable scenery for this production. Where there is no scenery, the cast had better be outstanding. Here, other than the actors who played Judas and Lazarus, the cast is of a lesser quality than one would see in a High School production of this musical. Generally, the actors’ voices are pathetically weak (and frequently require hand-held microphones in addition to the wired microphones on their heads); they do not enunciate well enough to discern many of their words when they sing; and their “dancing” leaves a lot to be desired. Perhaps due to the actors’ own limitations, the choreography is no better than a high school production – the first dance number highlights a combination of “The Hustle” and “The Chicken Dance”. Yes, ten actors all doing line dances for your $100-$200 ticket price. The intermission demonstrated the “bake sale” and amateur nature of the entire production. The actor who played Jesus jumped up on the piano immediately before the break and encouraged patrons to buy wine on an ad hoc bar that was set up on the stage. If you want to see Godspell, wait until it comes to a community theater or church group near you . . . clearly, it will be better than the mess that is presently playing at the Circle in the Square Theater.
