An Agreeable Evning with Disagreeable Characters Review by: LB, Apr 22, 2009 |
| This makes for a very entertaining evening of relatively weightless theater, in a good way. This play might be most appealing to regular theatergoers rather than occasional patrons, as, while the cast is marquee, the play itself has a more off Broadway texture to the material. Typical of Reza when she hits her commercial stride. |

Seating is horrible! Review by: thefichieras@comcast.net, Apr 22, 2009 |
| The seating is this theater is horrible - they should be fined for selling seats at top dollar and giving us a seat with no leg room whatsoever and so cramped to the person next to you. I couldn't even enjoy the show! |

Tedious and pointless Review by: susan, Apr 21, 2009 |
| We saw "God of Carnage" last Saturday night and were very disappointed. The play was long-winded and tedious. There was no story, beyond four adults arguing pointlessly and ferociously for nearly three hours, over and over, about a schoolyard fight between their sons. It was unfortunate that the cast was not given more interesting material. Marcia Gay Hardin, Hope Davis and Jeff Daniel clearly have stage presence while it seemed that James ... read more Gandolfini was less comfortable on stage. We had heard from friends that the show was funny, but aside from minor chuckles, we didn't find it clever or amusing. |

God Exacts Comic Vengeance on Mere Mortals Review by: deartheatergoer, Apr 20, 2009 |
| We saw "God of Carnage" last Sunday and enjoyed this comic farce immensely. The ensemble cast was "pitch" perfect (especially with all of flying objects involved). Special kudos to Marcia Gay Harden and James Gandolfini as the more "civilized" couple. Their timing and line delivery was inspired. The witty script by Yasmina Resa and flawless direction by Matthew Warchus contributed to the show's dark humor. In fact, the quieter moments were just ... read more as powerful and more effective as the hilarious slapstick seen on stage. The play was a cross between early Albee and Pinter and subtly dissects marriage, morals, and class status issues. While the play is, at times, laugh out loud funny, it also brought with it an elevated sense of pleasure tinged of melancholy and sadness. It was these absurdist touches that made the production so memorable. Don't miss this show! |

Review by: michele, Apr 17, 2009 |
| show was better than i expected. after the show, a group of people waited outside the theater behind a fenced off area for the actors to come out of the theater. all of the actors did come out and graciously signed autographs and posed for pictures. they gave the fans 10 minutes of their time. the crowd was well behaved and orderly. gandolfini on the other hand, snuck out the back door. great way to show appreciation to your dedicated fans.... read more. ten minutes is all it takes to say hi. |

Carnage - period!!! Review by: Izzi, Apr 17, 2009 |
This is the 3rd show of Yazmina Reza's I've seen and for me it's been all downhill. Adored *ART* but *Life X 3* was a disappointment 'n *God of Carnage* even more so. Our modern society seems unable to express itself without verbal abuse using foul language, even becooming physical at times. Quite frankly, this dysfunctional stuff is just not entertainment. It's like peeking in your next door neighbor's window but for an enormous sum of ... read more money. But this is Reza's forte and it's obvious from all the rave reviews here it's what people know 'n like. The same goes for James Gandolfino. I've never seen *The Sopranos* but my theatre companion said his character in the play *was* Tony Soprano*. To me, the mark of a good actor is that you never seen one role overlap into another. The rest of the cast is decent with Jeff Daniels being the highlight of the show. One person has said the actors were rude after the show. The curtain call gave that impression ...it seemed an imposition, not something anyone, with the exception of Marcia Gay Harden, wanted to do. In defense of the cast, it's a very emotional show and I can see where one would not want to be subjected to John Q. Public....but hey actors, without people who pay dearly to go to the theatre these days, where would you be?? Lastly, I left the theatre sorry I had wasted one of my precious few evenings in NY theatre.

Many Review by: Brian, Apr 15, 2009 |
| Quite an elivened trip into the symbiotic nuances of modern mariage. The plays' insights are what fuels its humor. However, the deliveries of those insights could not have taken place without the superb cast of Daniels, Davis, Gandolfini and Harden. Add Reza's sharp witted dialogue and you have the formula for can't fail entertainment. |

Paris really is NY in French Review by: Yolanda, Apr 7, 2009 |
Hitting the leg of the person next to you (while laughing out loud) repeatedly during a performance is a good sign. My stinging palm is proof that _God of Carnage_, at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre, is an absolute delight. This French expose of modern marriage is written by Yasmina Reza (translated by Christopher Hampton) and directed by Matthew Warchus (Boeing Boeing, Follies, and numerous West End productions.) Set in Cobble Hill Brooklyn in ... read more 90 minutes of real time, there is never a dull moment. It seems dismissive to describe Ms. Reza's work as a 21st century _Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf_, but somewhat apt. Perhaps any theatrical construct of two married couples exposing the underbelly of their selves and their marital dynamics is going to conjure Edward Albee. In the case of _God of Carnage_ it was the fierce humor, and quite frankly, the drinking, that whispered "Virginia Woolf" repeatedly. But that reference is merely a jumping off point for this play. Without resorting to Lifetime movie tactics, _God of Carnage_ manages to tackle; bullying, gangs, violence and social class while never losing its humor of dramatic interest. The fact that the evening stays above the sentimental fray must be greatly credited to the incredible cast. Hope Davis and Jeff Daniels as one couple and Marcia Gay Harden and James Gandolfini as the other couple. Not enough can be said about the sheer delight in watching these four very talented people. Ms. Harden has a luscious role and plays it like a virtuoso; she is hysterical and heartbreaking and infuriating. As difficult as it is to take ones eyes off of Ms. Harden, this truly is an ensemble piece and it is clear that this quartet is having the time of their lives. It speaks volumes to me that during repeated silences, the acting was equally as riveting as it was during the explosions. Ms. Davis and Mr. Daniels (a wealth management professional and attorney) are visiting Ms. Harden and Mr. Gandolfini (an art historian and home fixture retailer) to discuss their sons' recent physical altercation. The stage is set in a dramatic fashion. The entire stage is used as the living room; a rather unbelievable conceit for a Brooklyn home. However, in an entertainment world in which Greenwich Village rent controlled apartments are 2,000 square feet with terraces, and newspaper columnists can support $650 a pair shoe shopping habits, all NYC scale bets are off. There is a bold textured wall separating the living room from the rest of the apartment. The wall is set at an angle and we can see the walls behind it, painted red. As the play/story unfolds, the walls become progressively darker; a nice touch. Despite the expanse of the apartment, it is surprisingly how much of the production so accurately represents time and place; keeping in mind that this play is French. The only nod to its original Parisian setting is the omnipresence of the clafouti (a French pastry.) The costumes, mannerisms and parental concerns simply scream "NYC 2009!" I strongly recommend seeing this production, and seeing it with someone who does not bruise easily. |

Bring some friends and Make it a day !! Review by: Javy, Mar 30, 2009 |
Saw a Great Show called God of carnage. The Players held thier own, and kept the audience laughing and emphatically intrigued. I did not believe that 90 minutes went quick. All of the Players played off each other and had great comedic timing. Take in this great show before it ends, and have a great Italian Meal to make it a day.
