Style...No Substance Review by: Nicky, Jun 6, 2009 |
God of Carnage is an overrated show. Quite simply it is style over substance. THe actors give it their all even though Gandolfini is not good (just another TV actor trying to make his way on the Broadway), Daniels is his usual boring self, Harden is way over the top, and Davis is adequate. |

see a different show! Review by: apfix, May 13, 2009 |
| This play was a huge disappointment. Billed as "hilarious", we expected to really laugh and enjoy. Instead, it highlighted the sad and upsetting parts of marriage and family, of dysfunction and pain. This was not the enjoyable experience we expected in any way; the rows are SO close together it is ridiculous. We have seen many shows this year. This one was not worth the money. |

Review by: Tom B., May 11, 2009 |
"God of Carnage" Jacobs Theatre "Bravado is a kind of courage, isn't it?" This statement, uttered by Veronica, the character played by Marcia Gay Harden, seems to sum up the conflict at the heart of this excellent new play by Yasmina Reza, best-known for her Tony award-winning "Art." "God of Carnage" is one of those shows where you rather despise the characters as people, but love them as characters because they entertain. I'd never ... read more want to actually be in a room with Veronica, her husband Michael (James Gandolfini), or the couple they have invited into their home, Alan (Jeff Daniels) and Annette (Hope Davis). Michael is a self-confessed "total fucking Neanderthal" and Alan is wedded to his cell phone in the most impolite, self-centered way imaginable. (He's an attorney doing emergency damage control for his client, a drug maker who has been covering up some dangerous side effects of one of their meds.) Annette and Veronica display a tad more humanity, at least in the early going. But by the time the play reaches its exhausting conclusion (in which the characters are completely spent, as though they'd just completed an exceptionally draining four-way), the two wives have displayed quite a bit of false bravado themselves. The two couples have come together because Annette and Alan's child had attacked Michael and Veronica's son with a stick, knocking out two of the boy's teeth. So yeah, there's some tension in the room. What's great about the play -- besides four terrific performances from four seasoned pros -- is how the constrictions of the theater help lay bare the insecurities of the characters. How it puts their bravado on display, revealing a terrible lack of courage. Though it sounds grim, "God of Carnage" is actually quite funny. Hard to imagine how you can milk laughs out of lines like "Every word that comes out of your mouth is destroying me!", but Reza's text (with exceptionally able direction from Matthew Warchus) manages it. Terrific fun. |

Carnage is a good word to describe this doozy! Review by: Robert Boland, May 7, 2009 |
| I stood for the funniest 90 minutes of my life. In fact, the time went by so fast it was incredible. Carnage is a great word to use here, without spoiling what happens as we see these very gifted actors transform themselves. One has to see it to experience it. Some of the most incredible long pauses in the act one can hear a pin drop and cut the suppressed laughter/tension with a knife. AWESOME SHOW TO GO TO. You will not be dissapointed. |

Just okay Review by: Susan, May 3, 2009 |
| To be honest, I probably would have gone to another show if this one did not have the Gandolfini draw. Obviously, there were a great many others who also felt that way. The performance I went to had standees. This is no Neil Simon comedy. It has its moments and Marcia Gay Harden is very good. Memorable, no. |

To be honest, James Gandolfini was the big draw for me. But that quickly faded as the four castmembers combined for a completely entertaining 90 minutes. Stripping away the facades that we all have to some extent to reveal the true person underneath while I laughed (with everybody else) at stuff we probably shouldn't laugh at. All in all-GO! |

| The exuberance shown was beyond expectations. The story line has an essential, passionate twist that leads us to why these special actors were chosen for their respective parts. We couldn't have enjoyed their efforts more. A true theater experience. |

VERY ENTERTAINING 90 MINUTES! Review by: Barbara P, Apr 29, 2009 |
| My husband and I saw the show on Saturday with friends. When the curtain opened and the show began, I thought... oh boy, this is gonna be a long 90 minutes... NOT! Almost from the start these 4 actors drew me into the story line and had me ROARING with laughter. The casting is right-on! I absoluetely enjoyed myself... as did the other 3 folks with me. BRAVO! |

I WILL see it again... Review by: mamacita, Apr 22, 2009 |
| This is an amazing show.....from the first minute until the end there is not a minute to breathe. My only regret is that one loses so much of the dialog because of the uproarious laughter. The acting and language of the play are pitch perfect. It is hard to single out any one actor...they are all wonderful. |
