Have a Session with Freud....it's worth it ! Review by: Diract 66, Apr 9, 2012 |
| When you come into the theatre and sit down the Setting is there to just captivate you. My recommendation is just sit and look for a while. Notice the details of the room. Everything is precise and there for a reason. When the show opens, two characters engross you in their thoughts and opinions for ninety minutes. Of course, the part of Freud brilliantly played by Martin Rayner is the better part, a sick man toward the end of his life,... read more, spewing blood, coughing, and revealing thoughts of ideas and his life, gripping you throughout. His performance is the best acting off-Broadway without a doubt. After this show is over you will want to learn more about both of these characters, C.S.Lewis and especially Freud,... and his daughter. Listen to their conversation on stage and take your sides. Stay with it as it is very wordy, but also with humor interspersed in their conversation. Two character plays can be a problem for some people, but the performances and their sitdown for tea is worth it. Look back with wonder at this man, and say hello to the actors after the show in the lobby. |

Great Show Review by: lam, Feb 1, 2012 |
| Nice show. Was very skeptical before going how this 2 actor play was going to pull this off. Well, they did! Very impressed with how Martin Rayner played the part of Freud with him having mouth cancer and how he portrayed being an older man.....excellent! It was a quaint theatre that just set the mood! Great show! PS: It was pretty funny to see the "obvious" psychologist/psychiatrist in the audience! |

Entertaining, Engaging and Relevant Review by: ctcrockers, Jan 30, 2012 |
| Freud’s Last Session is a stimulating and engrossing experience. Both actors are excellent in their portrayals of Freud (Raynor) and C.S. Lewis (Dold). The dialogue was gripping and convincing. We felt we were privileged to be able to listen to these two great minds joust about their beliefs. From the opening dialogue the time passed too quickly and we did not want the play to end. With the ending we sensed we were losing a special ... read more connection with these men. We recommend the play without reservation. |

The set was beautiful -- but it wasn't enough Review by: Legs, Jan 18, 2012 |
| Expecting something really thought-provoking as well as entertaining, I was very surprised to see this. It was boring. Freud's illness was also distractingly overdone; the audience did not need quite so much "drama" in the way of the character's protracted coughing, blood stained cloths and water pitcher. We knew he was old and dying. The best part of the play was the set which was exquisitely appointed. |

DOES NOT LIVE UP TO ITS HYPE Review by: Avid Theatergoer, Dec 15, 2011 |
| I disliked this show and agree with the reviewer who thought the script was flat and predictable. I was expecting something witty and thought-provoking but got a lot of boring gas-bagging and a re-hash of basic pro/con arguments on the existence of god which made me feel like I was back in Philosophy 101 at college albeit with uninspiring professors who had tenure. Also did not like the Freud performance - terrible accent (what was that??) and ... read more hammy theatrics. The actor who played C.S. Lewis was very capable (Tuck Milligan) although he was the stand-in for Martin Rayner. Did not live up to its hype. |

Great Acting; Script Could Have Been More Thought-Provoking Review by: Bill from Long Beach, Dec 8, 2011 |
| Being an atheist, I was hoping this would be a spririted duel between intellectuals. I found it a bit too predictable. The actor playing Freud wss brilliant...the actor playing Lewis did a great job in a not-as-showy role. I was hoping to leave the theatre stimulated, but the script left me flat unfortunately. |

Don't miss this show!!! Review by: BJN, Oct 30, 2011 |
| Great, great, great show. Acting was superb, and the play moved along smoothly, just the right amount of seriousness and humor... The show we saw even had Tuck Milligan as stand-in for Lewis, and you felt that he had been doing the part all along. Don't miss this show before the run ends, well worth the price and more!!! |

Realistic and Entertaining Review by: upthehudson, Sep 22, 2011 |
| Taking in theater can be considered worthwhile if we are entertained. It can be an equally worthwhile experience if we simply learn something. Imagine the enthusiasm to be felt when obtaining both benefits with one play. Freud's Last Session (with its ambitious set and pitch perfect performances by Martin Rayner and Mark H Dodd)comes off so realistically, we felt more like witnesses to an event than members of an off-Broadway audience. The ... read more writing is cerebral and engaging. But the author has the good judgement to stay neutral and let us enjoy the pleasure of a good debate in an environment of physical and historical crisis. Extra bonus - being greeted by the actors upon exiting! |

One of the best plays I've seen. Review by: , Nov 17, 2010 |
| I rarely see a play twice, but I am going back for a second time for this one. Great script...a lot of humor, tight writing, fascinating subject, plus great acting. It was like watching a close tennis match, Freud would score a point, then Lewis would answer it...both men at the top of their game. The theater is lovely and very comfortable and the time flew. It was engaging, both intellectually and emotionally, which happens only in the best ... read more of theater. One of the best of the 50 plays I've seen this year. |

| Best play I have seen in years. You will be talking about it with your friends for hours afterwards. Even though the premise sounds boring, the play sparkles with passion, humanity and humor. (yes humor) Don't miss it. |

"it's not what you tell me, It's what you can't say that really matters" Review by: NedRacine, Aug 1, 2010 |
What a great evening of thoughtful entertainment. Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis meet for some academic discourse in September,1939. The setting is Freud's study which is very realistically depicted. You felt like you are a fly on the wall listening in on their conversation. Lighting very good too. The acting of these two men was excellent, but I especially liked the actor playing Freud. Very convincing language and mannerisms. He even ... read more looked like Freud. Great conversation revolving around religion and psychology. Although sprinkled with some humor, the dialogue deals mainly with serious but interesting issues. No fluff or music, only food for the brain. Did I say I really liked this play?
