Dusty forever a life in review...Wishing and Hoping you last Review by: Diract 66, Mar 1, 2013 |
| Surprisingly enjoyable ninety minutes of song and story, especially if you knew who Dusty Springfield was. Nowadays, she is mostly a forgotten strong voiced singer part of the British Invasion. Kirsten Holly Smith has written a show starring herself as Dusty and does a fine job singing her hits, and misses, recreating her long gowns and hippie clothes, beehive hairdo, and black eye shadowed trademark look. There is plenty ... read more of story along the way to skim the life of Dusty for the audience. Her youth and shyness, origin groups with two other girls and her brother, her sexuality, her drinking and drugs, her recovery, her cancer, essentially her life ups and downs are all covered briefly in this show. Unfortunately, true to many rock stars! At the performance I saw, the understudy, Ashley Betton, took on the role of Claire, among other parts, and she was a show stealer. Fantastic voice and sure to have a future on broadway, and only the understudy....Wow! The show really moves along and I wanted to sing along at times. Sure enough, I found out there are sing along performances. Check the schedule if interested. Only five actors in this show and a great back up band on stage make for an entertaining evening of song, story, and Dusty! |

Entertaining, but not great. Review by: DoctorJoeE, Feb 17, 2013 |
This production is a laudable effort by Kirsten Holly Smith; she has created a fitting homage to Springfield, who those of a certain age will remember as one of the better "blue-eyed soul" performers of the '60s and '70s and a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer; but now, sadly, largely forgotten. The problem is that Smith insisted on casting herself in the title role. This is completely understandable - most of us would do the same - but she is no ... read more Dusty Springfield; she simply doesn't have the voice for it. Though she tries mightily, she lacks the proper vocal projection and swallows many lyrics, and this is most evident, unfortunately, during Springfield's signature song, "Son of a Preacher Man". The wildly exaggerated oral calisthenics that she employs in her efforts to mimic the Springfield sound only make her deficiencies that much more obvious. The best performance - by general audience consensus during the curtain call - is turned in by Christina Sajous, a bona fide Broadway performer with a terrific voice, and a star in the making. Other performances, by vocalists and the band, were perfectly adequate. So while I applaud the effort, and recommend the show (reservedly), I wish that Smith had found someone with a voice more like Dusty's to place Dusty. While I completely understand, as mentioned, why she chose to live her dream by taking the role herself, she has diminished the quality and success of the project by doing so. |

You'll become a Dusty Springfield fan! Review by: Nicholas, Jan 10, 2013 |
I went along to see Forever Dusty with my girlfriend, who is a true Dusty Springfield fan, and I was taken aback with respect and admiration for this late performer. I now consider myself a "fan" of Dusty, and I cannot think of higher praise than that! I was equally impressed by the spot-on performance by Kirsten Holly Smith in the lead role. She exuberantly told us after the show that she put her heart and soul into this show, and I agree.... read more. She is Dusty, reincarnated.

Dusty is Dazzling Review by: Auds, Jan 4, 2013 |
| If you're a Dusty Springfield fan, this show is a must-see! The voices were phenomenal and the storyline gives you insight into the personality of Dusty. If you want a show that isn't too long...only 90 minutes, isn't too expensive, I got front row tix for $39.50 and is filled with memorable songs, this is the one to see. The actress who played Dusty came out after, spoke with the fans and took pictures and signed playbills. Thanks for a great ... read more evening!! |

IMAGINATIVE, REMARKABLY CONCEIVED MUSICAL BIO Review by: , Nov 25, 2012 |
| KRISTEN HOLLY SMITH MOST ACCURATELY CAPTURES THE SOUND AND STAGE PRESENCE OF THE IMCOMPARABLE DUSTY SPRINGFIELD. IN THE SPIRIT OF A TRADITIONAL JUKEBOX MUSICAL, SOME SONGS ARE USED TO DRAMATIZE THE ACTION AND TO FINE EFFECT. WITH ENGAGING DIALOGUE AND STYLES FAITHFUL TO THE ERA, THIS FINE SHOW IS A MUST-SEE FOR ANYONE WHO IS AN ADMIRER OF THIS ICONIC PERFORMER. |
