Look to the Rainbow.....now! Review by: Diract 66, Jan 7, 2010 |
| With this show closing in a week I wanted to see a show with a great musical score and lyrics that you can actually hum upon leaving the theatre. This show did not disappoint in that department. Kate Baldwin has a beautiful voice and Christopher Fitzgerald was delightful as Og. The whole cast had an energy from start to finish. Although plot development happens much too fast and the play seems outdated, its themes are not. Greed, political ... read more corruptness, and race relations are still making the front pages today. Where else on Broadway can you see so many black and white actors on stage together? Can you imagine that impact on stage in the 40's? As good as this show is, the set is quite simple for Broadway musicals. An abundance of green with leftover paint and an old green curtain, both from Tarzan! However, the quilt scrim as you enter the theatre is quite impressive. Here you have Broadway the way it used to be, an orchestra and an overture, something surely missed in todays musicals. See this musical now, and leave the theater actually remembering the music! Something else also surely missed today. |

Enjoyable Review by: , Jan 6, 2010 |
The strongest about Finian's Rainbow was the score and the talented cast. The best way to describe this is a pleasant little musical. I was sorry to hear that it is closing. It may have faired better in a smaller theater. Make an effort to see this before it closes. |

Great cast, great songs, dated show Review by: musicalover, Dec 31, 2009 |
| Great cast, great singing, great songs. However, staging unimaginative and kind of cheap. Plot about smokeless tobacco from movie not included, but did include a tobacco storyline. Here was an opportunity to not only comment on race, but healthcare too. Why not update this show? Some references were very dated such as Carmen Miranda with fruit on her head. |

Enjoyable experience Review by: JW, Dec 14, 2009 |
Not perfect, but still a very enjoyable show. Musical score is extraordinary; unlike many modern musicals where songs are indistinguishable, the songs and lyrics in "Finian's Rainbow" will be on your mind long after leaving the theater. Show is hampered by a bi-polar plot, one part supernatural fantasy, one part political and social satire, not always in sync. Despite that, a talented cast brings so much life to the characters, ... read more that I never found myself bored. Scenic and costume design and choreography, if not spectacular, serve the show well. Show is suitable for adults and children. |

Review by: Broadway Fan, Dec 8, 2009 |
| This is probably the best musical I've seen in a very long time!! The phenomenal music, written over 60 years ago, is as fresh as if it was written last week- and how wonderful to hear a live orchestra! The story, "a pixified fairy tale", hits its mark with race relations, suspect banking policies and corrupt politicians. And what a cast!! I can't think of any other show with as many talented actors/singers and dancers.Terri White! Chuck Cooper! ... read more Chris Fitzgerald! And they aren't even the leads!! The audience was on its feet wanting more. This is a show I will go back to- with both my parents and my children. Kudos to this production! |

Absolute Enchantment! Review by: BwayBeth, Dec 7, 2009 |
| If you're looking for a high-tech show with lots of bells and whistles, go elsewhere. But if you want a wonderful score, beautiful singing and stellar performances by the entire cast, then Finian's Rainbow is a must. I took my theatre-loving 8-year-old son (it was his 8th Broadway show) and he enjoyed every second. |

Don't waste your money go see Memphis instead!!! Review by: , Dec 6, 2009 |
| Do not waste your money. It was simplistic and forgetable. It was only OK. Go see Memphis. That was well worth the money and I am on my way to a 3rd attendance. It was great!@ What Broadway needs in this lackluster season. |

Recommended, BUT.... Review by: Sarge, Dec 5, 2009 |
FINIAN'S RAINBOW is a delightful joy to watch and the music will linger in the mind -- unlike today's throwaway music. I still remember the music from the radio in 1947 and thereafter. There are too many fine performances to single out one or two. But I have one exception. New York audiences are kidding themselves with their reaction to the play's anti-bigotry message. For one thing the individuals are portrayed with New York 2009 attitudes, ... read more not as people of the Deep South 60 years ago. There's exactly one person portrayed as a bigot, the big fat senator. Since everyone (EVERYONE) else is just fine with mixing races, what's the point. Although the show was a big hit in NYC in 1947, I remember NYC in 1947 and the anti-black bigotry was as thick as in the South, if somewhat under-breath. Oh, well; hypocracy is always with us. Go and enjoy, the show's much fun. |

Classic, Classy and Well Done! Review by: Aisle Say, Dec 3, 2009 |
| I was thrilled from start to finish with "Finian's Rainbow"- the songs are lovely, the talented cast is a joy to watch and along with its whimsy there's quite a meaningful and always-timely message of racial harmony, as well as a dig at our consumer-goods crazed ways. The choreography is breath-taking and Kate Baldwin is a treasure. Kudos also to Christopher Fitzgerald as the plucky leprechaun, Og. The kids in the audience the night I saw ... read more it seemed to like it as much as the grownups. It's the one show I'm telling people to see this season! |

DONT SEE THIS! Review by: theatergoer12, Nov 29, 2009 |
| I looked forward to seeing this show after having heard it was a revival and came back to rave reviews by both regular theatergoers and the New York Times. I was surprised to find that while I found the show to have a strong cast and ensemble, the story and set were simplistic, the music was forgettable, and the show overall was extremely un-captivating. This show completely failed to hold my attention from the moment the curtain rose (after a ... read more five minute overture of starring at nothing) until the final bow. The theatre was empty and I was in no way surprised. I would highly recommend that everyone should AVOID this show at all costs. There are many "pots of gold" on Broadway and this is not one of them. |

Loved it! Review by: Terry, Nov 20, 2009 |
I loved this show, what a wonderful night at the theatre. Yes, it is a bit dated, but I found the music and orchestra great, superb actors and excellent dancing. I was captivated by the show and was smiling throughout. I guess everyone's taste is different, as they say "different strokes for different folks", but I would highly recommend this show. |

Wonderful night at the theater Review by: Doug, Nov 18, 2009 |

A Heavenly Treat! Review by: csnyc, Nov 17, 2009 |
| Finian's Rainbow is a total delight and a heavenly treat for musical theatre lovers! From the first notes of the overture to the curtain calls at the end, I found myself smiling from ear to ear the entire evening. I then was humming the songs on the way home and now I've they've been with me for days after! Everything about this show is just wonderful - the entire cast including the large ensemble of singers and dancers, but ... read more especially the gorgeous (and gorgeous-voiced) leads Kate Baldwin and Cheyenne Jackson, the hugely delightful Jim Norton as Finian and Christopher Fitzgerald as Og the leprechaun, and the fabulous Terri White (who sings the show-stopping song, Necessity.) And what a truly glorious score! Old Devil Moon, How Are Things in Glocca Mora, Look to the Rainbow, Something Sort of Grandish, If This Isn't Love, When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love, and I'm probably leaving out a bunch more. I urge anyone who loves musical comedy to get to the St. James Theatre to see Finian's Rainbow. I can't wait to see it again! |

Entertaining show, but not captivating Review by: Frisbie, Nov 17, 2009 |
I reluctantly have to agree with the previous two reviews. I wanted to like this show, and I do think the cast tries hard and presents some appealing songs and dance routines. Overall, though, I couldn't help wondering why this show was ripe for a revival--it seemed a tad dated and just ordinary. As one reviewer correctly says, it doesn't really pull you in or captivate. I definitely wouldn't say avoid this at all costs, because it ... read more is entertaining, but if you want a really powerful, memorable theater experience, I would recommend Memphis or old of the old standards like Wicked or Jersey Boys. |
