August Wilson is a heralded Pulitzer prize winning playwright because he writes about the Black experience with great depth and honesty. The material for Fences was phenomenal, providing all of the actors with rich, substantive material to work with. And did they work! Denzel was ideal for the role of Troy Maxson, conflicted ball player turned sanitation worker, at odds with his family and the changing world around him. For brevity, I only mention these two actors, but rest assured Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson Stephen Henderson and Chris Chalk all delivered stellar performances, adding to the allure and luster of Fences. You dont just see an August Wilson production, you experience a world on stage that mimics your own or those of people around you. Its vitally important that the work of this playwright continues to be seen so that emerging theater audiences can experience his brilliance. Fences may be my favorite August Wilson shows. I look forward to revisiting many more of his productions.

| What an amazing show! I will admit I was a bit star-struck at first - seeing Denzel live and in living color was pretty amazing. But the show was just wonderfuly. You wuickly forget he is Denzel and you see him as Troy Maxson - in all his tortured glory. The rest of the cast held their own as well. Went last night and the acting was AWESOME!!! Denzel of course is always the actors' actor!! It was so dramatic that it brought tears to my eyes as it gave birth to August Wilson's masterpiece.The entire cast was outstanding. Would see it again! Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!!

I was fortunate enough to see the showing "opening night" and I must say it was simply AMAZING. Not to discredit Denzel for an outstanding performance, but Viola stole the show in Scene 1, Act 2. I saw grown mean wiping away the tears after her monologue. The entire cast gave there all for this opening night performance. Yes, there were stars in the audience, but I think they would have given that performance on any night of the week. ... read more Much great has to be given to the playwright, August Wilson for his superb writing, will is one of the "greats".
RUN! and see this play. I can assure you I will see it a 2nd or maybe 3rd time.

| Broadway doesn't get any better than this. Great story, performances, scenery. It was so good that there was applause after almost every major scene, something I've never experienced before. |
