A date with this Fela is all hype Review by: Diract 66, Dec 6, 2010 |
| This is essentially a one man show. The one man was Kevin Mambo. He was a terrific Fela. My only disappointment with his performance was that he never looked to the mezzanine. He narrates the story but all eye contact was to the people in the orchestra. The dancing was mostly like going to a club or Vegas show, nothing really special or creative for Broadway. If you're going to just see Patti LaBelle, don't waste the time. She has two songs, one ... read more short one in the first act and one long song in a way to long scene in the second act. Any capable Broadway performer could do her part just as well. The set design was most impressive with all walls of the theatre included in the design. The story was pretty weak and this might have been best in the new ninety minute musical format, tightening the plot and musical numbers and making the play even more dramatic. One part of the show can only be appreciated if there is a cooperative and enthusiastic audience. Go on discounts, but I would chose another musical instead, so many are closing in Jan. |

| I would have been happier if it had ended at intermission. There is some wonderful dancing in the first half, but everything is overdone, repetitive and way too long, especially the dream sequence in the second half. The story is hard to follow. The transitions are weak and it is essentially a great big bore. |

A Waste of Money Review by: , Aug 7, 2010 |
| While the dancing and music are phenomenal, not even the upbeat nature of this musical can keep it from being an absolute bore. Fela performs more like a professional dance recital than a broadway musical. With little or no plot to speak of, the audience is merely taken down a trip through memory lane with Fela as he recounts choice annecdotes from his life before breaking out into song and dance along with the rest of the performers on stage. ... read more Needless to say, it quickly becomes a repetitive and dull experience that is sometimes punctuated by small moments of poignancy that are quickly overshadowed by this performance's innate need to be "edgy". By the end of the first act I was ready to leave. Fela turned out to be an overpriced concert experience I wish I had never had the misfortune of seeing. |

Please .. No "Fela" in London Review by: pffellows, Jul 16, 2010 |
| I went to see "Fela" on my last trip to NYC in November 2009. I try to see as many Broadway shows as is possible in one week's annual visit; which is around ten, including matinees. I though that "Fela" was the most self indulgent "Trash" that I've seen in a long time; loud, unmemorable music performed by a "Look at Me I'm Over Acting", "Hammy" Cast. Now I learn that's it's coming to the National - Olivier Theatre in London in November 2010. I ... read more cannot understand Nicholas Hytner's (Their Artistic Director) reasons, or thoughts for bringing this abysmal show to London, especially when superb musicals such as "Jekyll and Hyde" and the latest "Bye, Bye Birdie" are totally ignored by West End Producers. As a regular attendee (Friend) of the National Theatre, I'll be giving "Fela" a total miss. I'll go and see something more artistically rewarding (whatever its origins) and suggest others do too. I'M NOT THE MOST HAPPY FELLA! Review by: BigKen, Jul 14, 2010 |
| Went to see what all the hype was about and was sharply disappointed. Lots of loud music, some good dancing, and lots of screaming. It's not for me...and I like mostly everything on Broadway. Do yourself a favor and see something else. |

I`ve never seen anything like this on Broadway Review by: Aileen Munoz, Jun 28, 2010 |
I didn`t know who Fela Kuti was till someone recommended me this piece... I need to say that i researched about everything. I was captivated by the music first, cause i`ve liked Antibalas without knowing Fela himself created the genre afrobeat. Then i got the Broadway Soundtrack as soon as i heard it i got the tickets. I have never seen anything so seductive and full of passion and rhythm. I recommend this musical 101%

Worst show I've seen in years Review by: Bradski, Jun 21, 2010 |
| What a waste of time and money. Don't understand what the hype was all about. There was no story... some brief words about an event in Fela's life followed by a song, next event explained to you followed by another song, etc... Not much of a story and the songs all sounded the same. Singing was not that great ... many songs had the lyrics projected over the stage so you could understand what was being shouted!!! I was ready to walk out by ... read more the intermission. |

Disappointing Review by: farmacy2, May 25, 2010 |
| First time visitor to New York and Broadway show. Read the reviews and the hyph around this Fela and booked. However, I found it very disappointing, no story or connection with the audience. The dancing was good, but the songs just merged with one another and the singing was woeful at times. Wouldn’t recommend. |

FABULOUS!!!! - - for some Review by: BroadwayConnoisseur, May 25, 2010 |
| We love culteral experiences, so this Broadyway show is absolutely in our top 10 of all time list. The music (of course!), costumes, and choreography were _FABULOUS_. Like a good play, the storyline was thought-provoking, and had us talking for hours. Having seen Fela himself in an a concert many years ago, this was a most fitting tribute. That said, we realize that many people we know would not appreciate this show and what it had to offer, ... read more and would be selective in those to whom we would recommend it. |

Fela is fabulous, beyond your imagination. Get your ticket now! Review by: Rosie, May 17, 2010 |
| Fela is an exceptional theater experience. There is engaging music, great singing and dancing like you have never seen before. There is not a single moment when you will not be excited, amazed and fixed on the action on the stage and in the aisles. Whatever you paid for your ticket, the show was worth twice as much. GO, Go, Go. |

Mambo energetic Review by: Rowensky, May 17, 2010 |
| The show was full of energy. Dancers were good though the dancing was typical and pretty much the same throughout the show, wonderful story but not clearly related through the play. Sahr Ngaujah who played Fela snubbed his audience after the show, refusing to come out of the theatre until the Ushers made sure none of the audience was waiting outside the theatre. Mambo, an awsome performer and wonderful personality, who also plays Fela was there ... read more and was gracious to his fans as were the dancers. The show was mediocre and Mr. Ngaujah's behavior after the show left us asking for more of Mambo. |

GO GO GO AND SEE FELA!!!- Can't stop thinking about it 2 weeks later! Review by: Leonetta, May 5, 2010 |
| OMG! 2 weeks after seeing this show I am still thinking about it and seriously contemplating how I can fly back across the country and see it again! Amazing set, music, dancers (phenomenal!!), acting ect. I have nothing bad to say about this piece. It is a rare occasion that something comes on Broadway this unique and this transformative. Do yourself a favor and GO SEE THIS MUSICAL! |
