Healing From A Distance Review by: folkyboy, Jul 17, 2006 |
While I went into this show with high expectations, I ended up feeling a bit subdued once it was over. Don't get me wrong, this has some of the best acting in theatre to date.
My initial disappointment lied in the some of the delivery that the work initiated. Much of the show is given on a dark stage with little set and even smaller movement. Which, in some instances, offered up more to your imagination. However, I ... read more felt Ralph spent too much time working on the accent and too little on the character in places and it felt a bit forced.
Even in some instances, Cherry felt like she was trying desperately to GRASP at the work and I felt like I couldn't tell who she was trying to convince. Her character has so much depth and she allowed it all to come through.
I'm just not sure how to react the storyline until after it was over and it had some time to congeal in my head. I recommend seeing it, however please do not go if you aren't fully able to take it all in and delve.
Maybe my main problem was I had to delve too much? |

I would see it again and again!! Review by: Dee, Jul 12, 2006 |
| I am so sorry for the folks who did not enjoy this show...it was powerful and rich...the language was like music...BUT you did need to listen and think...not easy for an "instant, everything is resolved in a half hour" society I admit...It is a refreshing diversion into the intellect...the was acitng incredible. It is not a simple romp in the park BUT for a thinking person for sure....deep entertainment...I want to see it again and again....the ... read more actors also chat after the show at the stage door...how generous of them! |

GREAT PLAY - GREAT PERFORMANCES! Review by: RALPH, Jun 15, 2006 |
An EXCELLENT and compelling play, unlike any other we've seen, and featuring three AAAA+ performances. Usually musicals dominate Broadway, but this year Broadway is on overload with truly excellent plays (except the awful and deceptively described History Boys). Seeing this from the front row center was a special treat. Ralph Fiennes was almost in my lap; too bad it wasn't Christina Applegate. I don't want to say too much and spoil it,... read more, but would like to add that DaVinci Code fans and others who hate religion will be disappointed. There's no anti-religion theme here. |

Heavy show, misses it's mark Review by: drkate, Jun 5, 2006 |
| Ralph Fiennes was the main draw for me- I was amazed by his other stage work. He was haunting in his role, but I really disliked this show. Would not recommend it. |

The critics have loved it, and you may too Review by: Tom Bestor , May 28, 2006 |
This is one of those shows that I think is well-acted, well-written, well-staged, well-directed – but that never hooked me. Ralph Fiennes plays a man with – apparently – a true gift for healing, but one that is subject to inconsistency; he never knows when he steps onto the stage and begins bringing the halt and lame to him whether or not he can deliver a cure. Cherry Jones (one of the stage’s greatest talents, but oddly off in ... read more this performance) is his long-suffering wife, and Ian McDiarmid is stunning as his manager. The story is told, Rashomon-like, from the viewpoint of each of these characters, in four separate monologues, book-ended by Fiennes, with one appearance each by Jones and McDiarmid. Because of this, the play takes a great deal of concentration and intellectual effort in order to assemble a sense of what really happened, of what is really true. Not that I don’t mind an intellectual challenge, but with such a dark and brooding subject matter, I’m perhaps not as motivated to stay tuned. Still, the critics have loved it, and you may, too.

A "Rashomon" updated Review by: idia, May 5, 2006 |
I am still scratching my head. I think it was all a bit too much for me to take in all at once. I admit that 4 monologues of over 20 minutes each attacks my attention deficit disorder. Yet Cherry Jones was able to keep me riveted for some reason -- she was that convincing to me -- (though I wish they'd ditch the fake smoking cigarettes bit. It's too distracting waiting for her to take puffs, like a true smoker would ... read more definitely do).
Ian Macdarmid was superb, a truly fine talent, but his very strong brogue had me straining my ear to understand some of what he said. I also found myself counting the amount of bottles of beer he opened (6). Yet he never actually quaffed much of what was in the glass he unrealistically kept topping off.
I am definitely in the minority, and I am willing to say that maybe I just missed it, but I guess I just kept picturing someone like Liam Neeson in the Ralph Fiennes role, and I just didn't get it. I believe this is my failing and not that of the performance he gave.
This play is certainly an ambitious endeavor and no easy piece to digest. |

Heal Exhaustion Review by: Sean og, May 5, 2006 |
Suspense is a good thing, but this is too drawn out. Accents - Ralph's accent is neutral, Iain's is a carcicature, and Cherry's accent does not reflect an Irish/English upbringing. All this leads to a combined story which, for me, could not be imagined.
Iain's character is a caricature. The cockney accent and dramatic facial expressions were so over the top (much to the American audience's delight). Anyone who has been to East ... read more London would find this mildly annoying.
I thought Cherry was, again, over dramatic. The crescendos and diminuendos were over the top and served to lessen my involvement in the story (and wake those getting some shut-eye).
Ralph's monologue was drawn out, way to long. While I am not classically trained, I didn't feel the long silences did anything to add effect. Indeed, it served to prolong the monotony.
On a positive note, I could never imagine how difficult it is perform a monologue such as this and my hat comes off for the utter endurance and professionalism of the cast. What I would say to punters is that they should drink a coffee beforehand and be ready to concentrate. $10 to anybody who is not exhausted by the end.

Haunting and beautiful; I would see it again if I could get a ticket. Review by: Maureen, Apr 25, 2006 |
| I walked into the Booth Theater not knowing what to expect. I found a minimum stage setting with maximum acting by Ralph Finnes, Cherry Jones, and Ian McDiarmid; the acting by these three was humbling. This is not an easy piece to witness; it is dense and dark and painful and lonely and layered and haunting. I left the theater wanting to read and research the text and wanting to experience the performances again. This piece will stay with you.... read more. It is not for children. |

thoughtful and the acting was topnotch Review by: freddie, Apr 24, 2006 |
| I thought this was an amazing play. The dialogue was so rich and the storytelling held me spellbound, The acting performances were superb. This is not an easy play and requires a lot of thinking and interpretation but I found it powerful and compelling. Just don't expect a light broadway musical, |

One of the worst plays I have ever seen Review by: edster9, Apr 23, 2006 |
This was one of the worst plays I have ever seen!
I like Ralph Fiennes and the actors are marvelous, but this is bascially 4 very long monologues about nothing. I have seen and enjoyed other Brian Friel play but this was a great disappointment. I am trying to get my money back.
