Geoffrey Rush was great but the play just wasn"t Review by: chicos girl, Mar 18, 2009 |
| This show started out as a comedy but turned into a very powerful drama. Geoffry Rush's performance was excellent. I couldn't believe his performance. Susan Sarandon was quite good. I must admit that the play bored me. I wanted to leave at intermission. My husband wouldn"t let me |

Early Exit for the King Review by: Francesco, Mar 16, 2009 |
One would think that with the talented and awarded cast, this play should have been well worth attending. Wrong, wrong, wrong. It was boring and left the audience in a debate as to why would such talented actors even want to be in this mess of a play. During one scene, it seemed as though Susan Sarandon was flexing her fingers just to stay awake. Exit the King is touted as a comedy, well maybe I missed the funny parts as I dosed in and ... read more out of sleep. By the end of the play many of us were just saying - "would the King just go down and Die", instead of just dragging on and trying to buy time, and put an end to this waste of our money. The only benefit from this play was to the wallets of the actors. I really wanted this Play to be something special due to liking all of the actors in it, but that just did not happen. I was actually embarassed for my wife and friends that I was treating for a wonderful evening out. As one could expect, the ride home to New Jersey was long and quiet. I must admit though, that the performance of Geoffrey Rush was simply amazing. The way he moved and contorted himself around the stage was the limited highlight of the evening. At the end of the day - or in this case the evening, spend your money on something worth while - Like Any Other Play. |

I really wanted to love "Exit the King" - I tried very hard to sit still while the king almost died, should have died and didn't die. During the ending eleven minutes when Sarandon and Rush are alone on stage I wanted to die, just so I could get out of there. Totally tedious. Who would have guessed that the King had on such heavy invisible armour when moments before he was rolling and dancing around the stage. The play, its ... read more characters and the acting was disjointed. On the poisitve side, Rush's movements and facial expressions were delightful. Ambrose glowed showing us complete ranges of emotions. Martin was funny with her timely delivery of her lines. The guard was inspiring as well. But, Sarandon should have endeavored to pick a better part for her return to Broadway, because she fell flat. It may have been the material, but her character's progression or lack of progression took me totally out of the performance. Sarandon must have thought that this play and it I did not see the archs in the characters as they made their way through this tedious play and I wanted to. I walked out of the theater totally frustrated. |

Rush and Ambrose Great, But Overall Disappointing Review by: ACC, Mar 15, 2009 |
Overall, I thought the actors were better than the material. Rush and Ambrose in particular, and Martin was reliable for a laugh. Saw the play in previews and the royal robes were an annoying distraction as Sarandon and Ambrose tried to navigate the stage thrashing their trains back and forth. Maybe they should just take them off in the throne room - surely royals don't wear them all the time ;-) I thought Sarandon's performance was a ... read more monotone one note throughout the first act (with a different monotone note for the second). I'm certainly willing to acknowledge I'm no expert so maybe it was intentional to make some statement as an outside observer or something for the first act, but I thought it ruined some decent lines and didn't add to the production. I tend to enjoy a good philosphical discussion, but I found myself just wanting the king to hurry up and die. I left feeling disappointed. I like all the actors very much; I just didn't enjoy the play. But I will take Rush's dancing and overall performance and the beautiful expressions of Ambrose with me as very fond memories. They received a very hearty standing ovation, to my surprise, so I'm probably in the minority opinion. It just didn't work for me. |

| Tedious, painful. With the limited exception of the people who sat in back of us, this seemed to be overwhelming opinion. The actors are talented and wonderful to watch. You couldn't pay me to sit through that again. |

go see rush Review by: theatre fan, Mar 15, 2009 |
| A different show, both enjoyable and boring, good and bad. I saw the show early in previews, Act 1 was enjoyable and well paced, however Act 2 moved at a smails pace, the ending (the exiting of the king, i. e. death) seemed to go on forever. Geoffrey Rush's perfromance is not to be missed, a clear Tony award winning performance. Its clearly a thought provoking script and should be seen for its uniqueness. |

| The play often hinted at potential and teased the audience with a complete story, but never delivered. |

Geoffrey Rush Shines! Review by: NYActor, Mar 10, 2009 |
| This show is incredibly unique! I have never seen anything like it on Broadway. Geoffrey Rush is spectacular and the supporting cast holds their own. I see a Tony nomination in his future. This is not your average kitchen sink drama or slapstick comedy, so if that's what you're looking for then I suggest you look elsewhere. But if you want to be moved, challenged, and entertained then Exit the King is for you. |
