Enjoyable, but Newsies was better Review by: Gilly12345, Apr 6, 2012 |
| I walked into Evita not knowing what to expect at all. I knew nothing about Eva Peron, so I did not know what the show was about, and I have heard great things about this show in the past. After Act 1, I was disappointed. The story was not very clear and the fact that there was no dialogue didn't really help. However, after act 2, I was mroe satisfied. I had an idea of what was going on, and I overall enjoyed it more. Ricky Martin delivers a ... read more great performance as Che Considering this is his Broadway debut, he was impressive. I saw the Eva Peron alternate (Christina DeCicco), and at first I found her to be very weak, but she redeemed herself in Act 2 with Don't Cry for Me, Argentina. As a whole, she was good-not horrible, but not fantastic. Michael Cerveris as Peron was good. I thought Rachel Potter as the Mistress was fabulous! She has a beautiful voice, and sang "Another Suitcase in Another Hall very well". The music in this show is timeless, and the dancing was fabulous. It is beautifully staged, and the costumes were very good. Overall, it was enjoyable, but not my favorite. I enjoyed Newsies a lot more. |

My Summerstock Production was better......Patti and Mandy have nothing to worry about. Review by: Joe B., Apr 2, 2012 |
I brought a group of 30 people to Evita....I feel I owe them their money back. 1. Elana Rogers may be from Argentina but she is a tiny little thing who sings like Mini Mouse. 2. Ricky sang it well but didn't have the protagonist down yet...his relationship to Eva was more like friends. Both Che and Eva sang "pretty" as opposed to them not liking each other. Ricky reminded me of the Leading Player in Pippin. 3.... read more. Michael Cervris was good but needs a better wig...it looked like he was wearing a shiny brown helmet. Why was there no Eva Peron movie in the beginning of the show...was was it just the voiceover of the movie? People were confused. Did not like how restricting the staging was...everything in the center of the stage boxed in by the set. Honestly, Migaldi, the mistress and little girl were better than the leads. This production left me flat and I went home and listened to the original soundtrack. They seemed to slow the tempo of the show with the music. A New Argentina didn't have the impact or the original...there were no signs, banners...just a line of people singing. The Waltz of Che and Eva-which was done as a Waltz in the original-had Che and Eva on opposite each other singing to each other. The whole show lacked intensity. Get the original CD and play that. |

Ricky Martin and Michael Cerveris were incredible. Very believable. Elena Roger not so incredible with her munchkin like mousy voice, not so believable. Great production! |
