Almost... Review by: Art0330, Jun 9, 2012 |
| This version had much going for it...good ensemble, great orchestra...but the 2 leads, Che & Evita had no chemistry. Ricky Martin played it as a wise guy, compared to Banderas' sardonic version in the movie, it didn't work. The lead just simply does not have a strong enough voice to pull it off.Save your money and rent the movie. |

Could be better Review by: theatregoer, Jun 6, 2012 |
| Ricky Martin was great but the lead who plays Evita does not sing well enough for the part. I was very disappointed in her. The rest of the production is done well. |

Female Lead Fell Flat (Does She Even Have Basic Vocal Training?) Review by: Brad, Jun 6, 2012 |
I had my reservations after reading the audience member reviews on Elena Roger and her "minnie mouse" voice, as posted on this site. Sadly, her vocal performance was even worse than I thought it would be -- her very first number showed how limited her range was, her singing void of basic phrasing, lack of enunciation, and most annoying of all . . . her ear-offending attempt at any and all high notes -- forced aggressively through her head ... read more voice(what little she had), with tin-like quality, always slightly flat, a screeching attempt to fill the shoes of the lead role of Evita. It was so disappointing, Roger's vocals actually sounded amateurish when compared to the professional chorus, and other leads (excellent male performances by Ricky Martin and Michael Cerveris). Thankfully, one female solo was delivered by Rachel Potter with a voice that transported you. But every other iconic solo or duet sung by Evita fell flat and left you uninspired, even disengaged and feeling put off by an Evita that came across as a spoiled and demanding teenager brat who insists on yelling and screaming at you. Ricky was a lot of fun to watch, and the cast, production, music, staging, lighting -- were all excellent. I applauded them all in the end, but couldn't even bring myself to clap for Elena Roger (many sitting around me didn't applaud her either). Wish I had seen the understudy DeCicco perform the iconic lead role. |

Elena must go! Review by: Kitty, Jun 4, 2012 |
| This show is excellent. I loved it. The only flaw is the miscast Elena Roger. she does not have a powerful enough voice to carrry the performance. Ricky Martin is awesome. The staging teriffic. Andrew Lloyd Webber music wonderful. I was in the send row center orchestra. The show is fast paced and over too soon. The sets were realistic. |

Enjoyable Production Even with the Weak Leading Lady Review by: Bill from Long Beach, Jun 1, 2012 |
| Enjoyed this a great deal. The pros: Michael Cerveris' performance as Juan Peron...strong and sexy with an amazing voice; Time Rice's amazing lyrics; Ricky Martin's voice and dancing; Elena Roger's dancing; Cerveris' and Roger's chemistry with each other...very hot; all the supporting players; the chorus; and the staging. The cons: Elena Roger's Minnie Mouse-ish voice in the upper register; Ricky Martin's "acting"; and the inclusion ... read more of the awful song ("You Must Love Me") from the movie...it just doesn't fit in with the rest of the songs and music. A very entertaining night at the theatre...this was the first musical I ever got to know as a teenager and am so glad I finally got to see a Broadway production of it!! |

Review by: Miss Beaujo, May 30, 2012 |
| I never saw Evita before. I knew the music and saw the movie. I saw the 2012 production last night. I loved it. Loved the chorus, the lighting, the sets, the costumes (hope the designer was nominated and wins) . I did not like Elena at all. I wondered why she did not get a Tony nomination and now I know why. I agree with the other review which said she had no stage presence. Her voice was painful to listen to. It was like putting your 33 ... read more 1/3s on 45 speed. (Sorry kids, will explain later.) Did she need a rest? I now know that one of my "theater regrets" will be not seeing Lady Patti in the role. |

| After all the mixed reviews and negative comments i expected not to like this but i did. The show was cleverly directed and Ricky Martin while he lacked the acting chops, has great charisma on stage that makes up for it. I though Elena Roger was excellent. I do understand why people may complain about her voice in a few parts, but i when i go to a musical i expect to see great actors with wonderful voices rather that great singers who try to act.... read more. |

Evita is King Review by: ExpertAudiencMember, May 15, 2012 |
| A fabulous production. The dancing and staging was superb, and really brought the journey of Evita to life in a fun, somewhat abstract, way. Elena Roger is a wonderful talent who actually sounds like an Argentinian (sometimes hard to understand, but thats Argentina for you). Ricky Martin has a lovely voice but plays himself. Cerveris is great. Rachel Potter has a brief but wonderful song. And props to the whole company for playing so ... read more many various roles, and doing so many wonderful dances. I loved it. A wonderful way to see Evita. Far better than the film (sorry Madonna! love you). |

Fabulous Production....Ignore the nay sayers....Here's why.... Review by: MJ, May 15, 2012 |
I have to marvel at the amount of people posting negative reviews of Elena Rogers "thin and weak voice" because they act as if they assume the role must be handled by a Patti Lupone. I'm quite sure many of these folks didn't even see that production some 30 years ago. Well, I did. I can compare the two but even that isn't fair since this is after all, a new and refreshing approach to this material. Back in the day, when Evita sings,... read more, "If England can do without me, then Argentina can do without England", there was an audible "gasp" from the audience because we were in the middle of that whole "Falklands Island" crisis and the show was inherently more "political" and the cold war was raging on too. Things are different now....this piece needs to be seen as a "character driven" piece and one that tells a story, not one that inflames political rhetoric. Gone is the "revolutionarly Che" who was envisioned in Mandy Patinkin's interpretation...we now have Ricky Martin's affable "everyman" who does little more than serve as a genteel "narrator" for the proceedings....gone is the politically calculating and somewhat "dangerous" Juan Peron...given here a more softer and "romantic" feel by the brilliant Michael Cerveris but most obvious, gone is the "I can belt to the rafters" interpretation of Eva made famous by Patti Lupone, in lieu of a softer, but still very calculating and ambitious young woman...played brilliantly by Elena Roger. YES, Ms. Rogers voice is thinner but its not BAD....NO her voice wont shatter glass...but its certainly APPROPRIATE for the part. Where is it written that Eva has to be a mezzo with a belt to end all belts? Remember the insane reaction to the casting of the film with Madonna? Well this casting is far superior to that because no only is Ms. Roger a dead ringer for the former Argentinian first lady, but she has the size and the chops to pull of the transition from young 15 year old poverty stricken waif to powerful first lady of a nation without ever losing a bit of authenticity and yes...the fact that she IS ARGENTINIAN matters in this case.... Do not listen to the nay sayers on this site....Go see the show yourself especially if you have never seen it before...this production is glorious in sets, costumes and lighting...the show has added MORE dance than it ever had before and it sure helps Ricky and Elena (both trained dancers) in conveying more of their talent....this production makes Superstar seem like the bastard cousin to a far superior work....GO AND ENJOY!

Two out of three aIn't bad Review by: Sam L, May 13, 2012 |
Like the old Meat Loaf song Ricky Martin..fabulous! Show almost worth seeing just for him Michael Cervaris..powerful voice..more of a supporting part but very good Elena Rogers..one of the weakest broadway leads I have ever seen. Good in the dancing numbers, and she did a decent job on the two big songs, but her any songs that required her to hit high notes, were painful. She is a very small woman and no stage presence. Not ... read more sure how she got such rave reviews in London, but cannot carry this difficult lead. The theatre is beautiful, the staging is good, dance numbers a bit disappointing...overall made the best of it, but would not recommend. Sam L. |

Save your money Review by: McKenna, Apr 24, 2012 |
I really wanted to like this show, however I was underwhelmed all around. As the lead, Elena's voice is decent on the soft numbers and screechy on the numbers that should wow us. I brought a group here and almost everyone wished they had seen something else. See the movie with Madonna instead! |

| Michael and Ricky are marvelous. I'm sorry but I have nothing nice to say about Elena Roger...her dancing is wonderful? Her singing voice...not so much. Maybe I'm biased growing up with Patti...but man, she left much to be desired with the singing. |

Spellbinding! Over too soon! Review by: , Apr 8, 2012 |
| I loved this show so much that I tried to get tickets for that evening's show (sold out). As it was Sat. matinee, Christina DeCicco starred. She was fabulous. Ricky Martin looked so comfortable on stage; a great performer. I am planning a return trip next month, and have 2 more tickets. Can't get enough!!!! |
