Imaginative production Review by: JW, Feb 8, 2009 |
Imaginative direction and an extremely passionate performance by Daniel Radcliffe as psychiatric patient, Alan Strang, breathe life into this mystery thriller. The more difficult role in the play, that of Strang's psychiatrist, Martin Dysart, although performed as well as possible by stand-in Bill Buell, left me wanting. As written, I just couldn't connect with this character's moral dilemma, and the character's meandering monologues appeared to ... read more adversely affect the play's pace. As already mentioned by numerous reviewers, special kudos are due the show's designers, particularly the costume designer, for heightening the play's drama. Overall, the play was well worth seeing, particularly since in less capable hands, this play may have dissolved in absurdity. |

serious play not for families Review by: musical fan, Jan 25, 2009 |
| I'm normally a fan of broadway musicals over the plays but this was quite good. It exceeded my expectations. The set was very simple which I felt showcased the amazing ablities of the cast. It did have both male and female nudity so I would not recommend this for families. This is a play for someone looking for a serious storyline. It does have some funny lines but is mainly dramatic. I felt it was worth the money and was all ... read more around a very entertaining play. |

Fabulous directing! Review by: TheatreTeacher, Dec 31, 2008 |
Wow. I really liked the directing and design oif this production. Kudos to Thea Sharrock and her design team. everything flowed so beautifully. You should really go see this show for the directing. Both Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffiths were very, very good. I was very impressed with Mr. Radcliffe. Good for him for tackling and nailing this role. As for Mr. Griffoths, by the end of the play, I felt like I really ... read more knew his character personally, so he must have been doing something right. Not as flashy as Radcliffe's role, but very effective. I didn't love Kate Mulgew or the actress playing the mother. Anna Camp was good as the young girl of the piece. Much has been said about the nudity of Harry Potter, but just so families know what is involved, it is a fairly short scene that also involves nudity of a young woman as well in a fairly sexual scene. The writing is great. Very thought-provoking. |

Highly recommended for those looking for a serious play Review by: Craiggers38, Dec 26, 2008 |
| We saw this in November. We had seats on the stage (elevated above the action). Yes, we did buy tickets due to all the hype, but we were blown away by the acting and the thought-provoking subject matter, and this was a very memorable New York theatre experience for us. We're still talking about it with friends and family. I've been disappointed to see that the box office has not been great for this must-see production. |

Equus good play to watch Review by: cliftsnew, Dec 17, 2008 |
| I count myself lucky to have been able to watch this play. I think Griffiths stole the show. I think this is were he belongs, on the stage! He did an excellent job. I was shocked also to see Katy Mulgrew in the play. Daniel Radcliffe did great as well, but there was more hype than what there should have been. I do admire him for being nude on stage I sure could not have done it. I would definatley recommend this play to anyone who is of ... read more at least 16 or older. |

Equus very, very good, but nothing could live up to the hype Review by: sfstagewalker, Dec 12, 2008 |
I read the play in college, some 20 years ago, and saw a small theatre production of it in San Francisco about a year ago. So, from a plot perspective I was in for few surprises with Equus. I had been told that Radcliffe was quite good, but that Griffiths was truly the one to watch. I enjoyed the show. It's solid, beautifully staged, and compelling. I don't know if I can call it brilliant. Daniel Radcliffe does a very fine job with a ... read more very difficult role. I've seen various review saying that he didn't quite nail it for them, but I can't think of another 19 year old who could do as well (let alone better) with the role of Alan Strang. Richard Griffith's performed his role with deceptive grace, but I can't say that I ever really connected with him emotionally. Perhaps it was simply an off night (a very cold and wet Wednesday night show), but I walked away feeling he was very good, but that was about it. The true stars of Equus are the light, set, and costume designers, as so much of the power of the piece comes in its unabashed theatricality. If you ever want to see Equus, I'd recommend this production, as I doubt you'll see a finer production on most levels. But it didn't rock my world. |

Brilliant !!! wish I'd still be in NYC to see it again... Review by: karensfriend, Dec 8, 2008 |
Brilliant, there is no other word for this show, it disturbs you, it makes you laugh, Daniel makes your heart pound, such a mature actuation for such a young fellow, he's amazing. It's been more than a week I've seen it and it still haunts me, I wish I could see it again. To the cast thank you for such a nice moment, dialogues are sometimes a little long but when you're starting to loose the attention, something happens right on time. The horses ... read more are fantastic, gorgeous...if you doubt it, then don't any more, go look at this show you won't regret it. To Harry Potter fans, this is not a show for teenagers at all, I thought taking my 13yr-old but I did right not to... |

WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL! The acting was good, but the story line and setting of the stage was boring. No excitement. I was falling asleep in the first half. I love the theatre saw about 20 plays. This was the only disappointed I have seen! |

Equus and Radcliffe's Performance worth a standing ovation Review by: Doll, Nov 30, 2008 |
| I attended the Nov. 2 matinee show with my two adult daughters. It was such a thrill to see Daniel Radcliffe, Richard Griffiths and Kate Mulgrew in person! I knew Griffiths and Mulgrew were seasoned play actors, but was very impressed with Radcliffe's intensity, focus, and dramatic presence. His ability to project his voice and portray his character's charged emotions was terrific. I was thrilled and chilled by the raw and violent scenes he ... read more performed in this psychological thriller. If you are a fan of Radcliffe, as I am, you will be absolutely rapt by his compelling performance. By the end, I was on the edge of my seat with my heart in my throat! I joined in a standing ovation, with many of us cheering. This play is clearly for adults and worth every penny. |

So powerful I was trembling. Review by: EJ, Nov 25, 2008 |
| If you appreciate good drama you will be deeply moved by this excellent production. Both Radclifffe and Griffiths are brilliant. The staging is superb and the story is mesmerizing from the first line to the last. I'm a New Yorker and I've seen a lot of great drama on Broadway: This rates among the best. |

Fair production, not worth all the hub bub Review by: MyHumbleView, Nov 3, 2008 |
| Although the acting was very good, the production as a whole left me wanting. The first act was so slow, I couldn't wait for intermission. Since I knew the story, there were no surprises in the play and no shock factor. The play fails to move or enlighten the audience in any way and you walk away feeling there should have been more. I would not recommend unless there is nothing better you haven't seen. |

A fantastic performance, would love to see it again! Review by: Renee, Nov 3, 2008 |
| I saw this October 26 and made the trip to New York from the west coast especially to see it. It was worth every cent. Richard Griffiths is a wonderful actor and Daniel Radcliffe is very impressive in a very challenging role. The supporting cast is fabulous. It is not a play for children but adults will find the territory fascinating. |

Well done show -- a must see Review by: ctjanie@optonline.net, Oct 22, 2008 |
| I’ve just seen what can only be described as an amazing play. Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffiths performances were intense and powerful. Radcliffe can act and it was clear that he won’t be remembered for just playing the boy wizard. Radcliffe gave a powerful performance of a screwed up young man explaining what drove him to blind 6 horses. The whole cast is outstanding. Richard Griffith is exceptional (of course). I would love to see ... read more it again and highly recommend this play |
