Something special! Review by: kbob, Jan 4, 2011 |
| OMG!!! We absolutely adored this play! John Buffalo is AWESOME and the Count Dracula is played by a gorgeous European man, who scared us and also made us cry for him! We waited to get autographs after the show and everyone was so nice. Too bad I don't live in New York to go see it other times.--Kelli |

Review by: luvtheatre, Dec 24, 2010 |
| This new revival is a sincere, straightforward, engaging rendition of the classic tale of the conflict between good and evil, between science and superstition. The cast, a mix of Broadway veterans (George Hearn and Tim Jerome) and relative newcomers from TV (Jake Silbermann) and the European stage (Michel Altieri), effectively brings the story to life (yes, pun intended!) The set is impressive for off-Broadway and the special effects are fun, ... read more although the bats are still in training for opening night on January 5th! The night I was there it was fun to see the children in the audience mesmerized by the stage goings-on so, perhaps oddly, it seems to be a good family show. |

I'm always up for a new Dracula, but this latest production is a total mess. The dialog is generic, and sometimes mangled. The cast is awful. Michel Altieri's Dracula is petulant and goofy. (The long hair doesn't help and seems out of place.) George Hearn was very ineffectual and unconvincing as Van Helsing. John Buffalo Mailer's Renfield irked me immediately -- his southern accent was the most terrifying (and annoying) thing in the play. ... read more Emily Bridges, as Lucy, is uninteresting and a poor match for a petite Dracula. Tim Jerome as Seward and Jake Silbermann as Jonathan Harker are ok. Set design is sometimes good, and sometimes terrible. At times it reminded me of community theater. I'm sorry, but the bookshelves, which are paintings, just look silly. I was very disappointed with this production. It was watchable, but for all the wrong reasons, a shocking train wreck that should never have gotten this far. Thora Birch, who was fired (maybe because her dad caused a ruckus with a fellow cast member) should consider herself lucky.

The living dead return! Review by: LD, Dec 20, 2010 |
I enjoyed this version of Dracula. Its straight up, not played with camp and, makes use of a variety of special effects and some tried-and-true theatrical mechanisms to fool the audience (most willingly) into accepting the basic premise. For a moment, I thought I was at that other show down the block- Spider Man- when a character crawls down a wall like, well, a spider! The set is first class and all the performances were on top of their ... read more game except for Emily Bridges (Miss Wells) who seemed a step or two behind the others, but since she moved into this roll at the last moment, I am sure she will get better nightly until the January 5 opening.

A true preview finally! Review by: Weezerbleezer, Dec 19, 2010 |
| Mostly when I see a preview of a show it is for the mist part a polished production and I sense that I am a guinea pig to help gauge how we the audience will react. Dracula with George Hearn was not one of these experiments. This show clearly aims to bring the nostalgia back to the vampire genre with the huge popularity of the subject in film and cable television. This preview implies nothing more than that it is still finding it's footing. To ... read more the lay theatre goer it may seem a bit thin or unfinished. To the regular theatre goer it is a rare opportunity to see the final sanding and painting of a masterpiece readying itself for a powerfully dramatic and traditional theatrical experience. George Hearn is so present that one could easily overlook that he might be riffing around some of the younger actors in the show. Director, Paul Alexander seems to be striving to balance the technical spectacle audiences have come to expect with a realistic and fun period play. If you are used to seeing previews that are nothing more than a formality before the opening then you have an unique opportunity to see a true preview of a play trying to push boundaries of style in an unexpected way by bringing the classic tale of Dracula to the stage on the heels of and in spite of Twilight and True Blood. If you are expecting a cheesy farce this is not the play for you. If you want to see what sparked the interest in vampires through popular culture than this us a must see production. The theatre itself is also a surprise. Though it's an Off Broadway theatre, if you didn't know that going in you might be surprised to discover that coming out. This is one of the most comfortable theatres I've ever experienced. There are no bad seats and the seats are designed in a way that you will never find yourself twisting your neck to see the action. Overall this play is still rough technically but as it continues on towards it's opening I believe it will enthrall audiences and become a hugely successful alternative for those of us who like our "First Vampire"and his slayers both elegant and evil. |
