Delightful Review by: golfmom, Apr 22, 2013 |
Donnybrook was a delightful presentation of the story of The Quiet Man. It would be unfair to compare this to the movie since there are many scenes that would have been impossible to do on the stage, especially the small stage at the Irish Repertory Theater. The actors each did a fine job, with the best two being the lead of Mary Kate and Mickeleen. It was entertaining and the music and voices were absolutely wonderful. Would love to ... read more see this muscical revamped and redone for the Broadway Stage. It is an Irish-American classic and would be nice to reintroduce this to the American and Irish stages! Good job, IRT! Thanks for bringing this to life again. |

Donnybrook!....fighting to stay alive...and awake! Review by: Diract 66, Mar 1, 2013 |
| Sold Out show Donnybrook! will give you a chance to see a show that was a flop on Broadway in the 60's. Watching this show you can see way it did not last. Although the actors do a good job with this material, especially the life of the show Samuel Cohen( Flynn) and Kathy Fitzgerald (Kathy Carey), the music, lyrics, and book are just not up to par with the R&H success of that time period. The first act is slow, but the second act moves ... read more well and bring some needed life to the show. Irish Rep has limited space but has done a wonderful set design, with a revolving setting for various buildings opening and set by the actors in a creative and natural manner. The movie The Quiet Man is the basis for this musical, so don't put the standards of today in your view of this outdated romance. The song "Dee-lightful is the World" sung by Fitzgerald and Cohen is a highlight of the second act. If you go to this theatre sit in the big section facing the front of the stage. There is only a few seats on the side and it is right next to the Orchestra, which by the way has four pieces, three being a violin, cello, and a Harp! This revival is totally appropriate for the Irish Rep because of its theme but everything else is not worth the fight. A limited run, just like the original. |
