Tennis anyone? Review by: Joe , Apr 19, 2007 |
I saw it this past Saturday night, the 14th, which I think was the fifth preview. It's engaging enough, but they did miss lines, and it wasn't one or two. More rehersal should have been done before it went into previews, but, I'm sure by the time it opens it will be perfect. The story is interesting, nothing exciting, or that will have you on the edge of your seat, but you do see the bond that these two very different women have, since they were ... read more tennis champions together so many years ago. I liked Seldes' character more than Lansbury's but both of them are developed and well acted.
My only real complaint aside from their missing words/lines here and there is McNally's writing. It wasn't entirely coherent all of the time. It didn't flow. And I don't think it was because of their missing lines as I mentioned before. They seem to go from one topic to another rather quickly. I think it should have been more conversational. Perhaps it was because they missed lines - I don't know.
It's great to see Lansbury on stage again. She and Seldes are very good together, and this will probably be the last show Lansbury does, since she's now in her 80's. So if you're a fan of hers, don't miss it.
Worth seeing, even with the imperfections, which I think will be resolved by the time it opens. Previews for most shows are a little shaky, what with changes still going on and so forth. However, it's not for everyone. If you're expecting some big extrvaganza, it's not for you. But if you're interested in seeing two theater legends in a nice play, it's worth it. Just don't pay full price for tickets. Most shows (including this one) are not worth $100 a seat. |

Definitely see it Review by: SarahB, Apr 19, 2007 |
I saw it on the first preview on April 11th and again last night on April 18th. What a difference a week makes! I enjoyed seeing the great actresses the first night and thought some of the lines were very funny, but it was hard seeing them stumble over lines. Some cuts were made to the script and it moves better and easier now. They seem more at ease and are obviously enjoying themselves. The audience last night ate it up. If you want ... read more to laugh, see it. If you especially want to see one of the two greatest stage actresses, definitely see it. It's not Pulitzer quality, but it's a great time.

The Pits Review by: Herc, Apr 18, 2007 |
Stay away from this one. Lansbury and Seldes can't remember t heir lines. Terrence McNally should give up writing NOW! |

Give It Some Time Review by: Al10Chimneys, Apr 15, 2007 |
| The actresses were not prepared for an audience and previews should have been postponed. The play has much to say about many subjects. However current audiences can't seem to get past the flubbed lines and listen to the play. Thus sadly what hopefully will evolve into a lovely evening of theatre is getting bad mouthed. If they can sit through Vanessa, they can sit through this. Wait a while then go. |

Did not like it Review by: Joyce, Apr 14, 2007 |
| Was very disappointed - Angela Lansbury although a great actress did not bring much to the role nor did her partner. There were a few laughs but I was not thrilled listening to two woman, who sat in their chairs throughout the whole performance, reminisce about their lives as aging tennis players |
