THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A PRO (OR TWO) Review by: LOTTIE, May 2, 2007 |
| IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER. A GOOD PLAY PERFORMED BY GENUINE PROS WHO STAY ON THE STAGE FOR 90 MINUTES. A MOVING EVENING SPICED WITH WIT. DON'T MISS THIS ONE. |

Enjoyed it a lot. Review by: , Apr 28, 2007 |
| Saw the play today, and it was much better than these reviews. The production must be getting better with practice. It was a touching, and funny, and looked sensitively at the question of what are our legacies what do they cost us. The actresses were much more confident than these reviews suggest, and it was great to see these two giants. |

It's worth the 100 minutes Review by: Muser, Apr 27, 2007 |
Just saw "Deuce" in previews and greatly enjoyed it. The writing clearly conveyed the fact that two people could know each other for nearly 50 years and not really "know" each other. The transition of their relationship from the beginning of the performanc to the end is touching. It's a thoughtful production and both Lansbury and Seldes gave solid performances, (though I'd give the nod to Seldes). This is not a play for folks who ... read more expect everything to be handed to them...you need to be able to think. |

These two women deserve better ... Review by: , Apr 26, 2007 |
I went to the matinee yesterday (4/25) and while it was thrilling to see these two legends of the stage, there was little in the script that I found spontaneous, daring or thought provoking. While the premise of the play holds great potential to explore the life experience of these partners of a mentally tough game, the lack of daring in the script reduces their reunion to an occasionally witty retrospective.
The effect was ... read more more voyeuristic than enthusiastic.

Deuce could use some more polishing Review by: Robkabob, Apr 25, 2007 |
Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed by this production. The material has great potential but as soon as you think the actresses are hitting their stride, it becomes disjointed.
Where the show was strong: It is worth seeing two legends on stage together but manage your expectations. They do the best they can with the material but have good chemistry.
Where the show was not up to par: The sound effects of the tennis match were ... read more much louder than the (apparently) unmiked actors. It was difficult to hear them. The material was cliched at times and the dialogue could be disjointed. The supporting cast is not very strong. The "admirer" addresses the audience directly and reminds them about the legends ...many times. The sportscasters are not convincing at all. Apparently, someone does not watch network sports commentators. I agree about Ms. Lansbury's use of a vulgar word. It seemed forced when she could have used something less vulgar but more amusing...say for example calling the mistress a "Common Guttersnipe". The satire on racism also fell flat.

40-Love Review by: Broadway Baxter, Apr 25, 2007 |
Lansbury and Seldes, two legendary performers, are sadly wasted on this poorly written and ill conceived drama. Their acting and stage presence were, as you would imagine, flawless. It was even a bit magical at times to watch the the grand dames at work. The drama's fault lies in the stilted, meandering script and the annoying hammy commentators perched above the stage. McNally reminds us to treasure legends who have heart and who play ... read more (tennis) giving it all of their own idiosyncratic magic. In contrast to his play's message, however, the playwright's sterile courtside world of fans and commentators does little but hit us over the head with how wonderful the tennis players are, rather than allowing that insight to come out through the pair's interaction. The result is that half of the cast fails to connect with the audience. McNally resorts to repeated profanity to squeeze laughs from this farce. With the kind of acting talent he had before him, this just seems cheap.
See the play to see Lansbury and Seldes. The play is forgettable; seeing that pair in action is not. |

After reading these reviews, better than expected! Review by: terry, Apr 23, 2007 |
Saw the show Monday 4/23/07 & have to say that I enjoyed it. I thought the performances were good, not too many flubbed lines, seems they are improving as the previews proceed.
I wouldn't say it is the best drama on Broadway right now but I wouldn't say that it is that bad, either. In my opinion, it is very good, not great.

Mc Nally's Waste of Theatrical Talent Review by: jolee, Apr 23, 2007 |
| A thin and shallow play which certainly does not take advantage of the stars. It is alternately glib, forced, crude and maudlin - just about summing up Mc Nally's recent track record. What can you say about such a waste of talent given the presence of these two stars? |

See something else. Review by: dsjmfa, Apr 22, 2007 |
Don't spend your money on this. The book is not good. The actors do their best with bad material. It's not directed very well. The leads get out of their chairs once (and not at the same time) and sit again shortly after. They sit and talk for 1 hour and 50 minutes...no intermission...and frankly from me at least...no interest. Remember these great actresses as they were, and will be...but not not for this production...which you should ... read more not see. |

An Excellent Play, smart, funny, and a bit sentimental Review by: ChelseaGirl, Apr 21, 2007 |
| I saw the play this afternoon, and I thought it was excellent. Angela Lansbury and Marian Seldes have great chemistry and the dialogue is smart and engaging. I've seen in other reviews that lines were flubbed, but that was not the case at this performance, both actresses were perfection. |

Very Boring Review by: , Apr 20, 2007 |
| We attended Deuce on the 19 April 07 and it would have to be one of the most boring performances I have ever seen. The performance features the two characters seated at a tennis match talking about their lives and that is it. |

Great Stars-Bad Play Review by: Larry F, Apr 19, 2007 |
| While it certainly is thrilling to see these two legends live on stage, the production they are in is quite weak. The play itself is both pedantic and pedestrian as well as unnecessarily crude. Did I really need to hear Miss Lansbury utter the c-word several times? The two women did not seem to have line trouble, but their characters were inconsistent and not fully formed. As it is early in previews, perhaps a few more weeks will make a ... read more difference, or better yet, allow Miss Seldes and Miss Lansbury to find another play in which to appear. |

Disappointing and sad experience Review by: SYLVIA, Apr 19, 2007 |
| I saw this on April 18- very sad and disappointing experience. Two great actresses totally lost- couldn't remember their lines- a cue person audibly loud in the wings. The play is a crashing bore. Major letdown. |
