This is Wonderful! Not the same production as reviewers wrote about in 2007/8 - go see this! Review by: a mom, Jan 22, 2011 |
| PLEASE note: the earlier reviews posted are for a DIFFERENT production of Cymbeline, not the completely wonderful show with a too brief run at the New Victory this month. This one is VERY special, and very much worth seeing!! I totally agreed with the rave review of the NY Times on 18 Jan 2011. |

Go see! Review by: KimmieK, Jan 8, 2008 |
| I enjoyed Cymbeline. In a previous review, the sound was berated. I suggest the HEADPHONES which were wonderful and made the show very enjoyable. I would rate this as one to see. |

Great Shakespeare Review by: NedRacine, Jan 2, 2008 |
This is a lovely production. The costumes, props, lighting, and direction were all outstanding, yet did not distract from the main focus of any of Shakespeare's productions---his rich language. I do not understand why anyone who saw this show would think there were any hidden political agendas as to current events. I found none. The music was especially subtle and haunting. The closing scene along with the music ... read more really created a touching sense of the Kingdom at last being united in Love and Peace. See this play while you can. |

Cymbeline Review by: Tom Bestor, Jan 2, 2008 |
I wonder what the Bard himself would think, had it been him instead of me planted in the seventh row center of the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center, watching this late romance of his being played out in its vast confines. Would he have loved the elements of spectacle enabled by the high fly spaces and hydraulics (not to mention budgets), or would he have felt something human and approachable was lost amid the amazing costumes sets and ... read more effects?
"Cymbeline” is one of Shakespeare’s least-produced plays, but it’s certainly not for lack of action. Love, betrayal, jealousy, intrigue – it’s all here. And though it’s beautifully-stage and acted with energy and intelligence (with special kudos to Martha Plimpton, John Pankow and Adam Dannheisser, less for the one-dimensional Phylicia Rashad), it left me feeling chilly and unsatisfied. (Though the glory of Shakespeare’s language still comes shining through.)

Shakespeare in the Spin Zone! Review by: DCADOG, Dec 6, 2007 |
My two reasons to see CYMBELINE were (1) to watch Martha Plimpton, an actress I like, and (2) to see a straight and unaltered play by Shakespeare. Only one purpose was met.
Miss Plimpton, age 37, hasn't aged a day in the last 20 years. She still has the figure of a slim 17-year old and the spunky personality to go with it.
However, unbeknownst to the Lincoln Center --- surrounded as it is by Columbia University, NYU, ... read more Hunter College and the Hudson River --- remains isolated in a sea of pseudo intellectual spin.....
William Shakespeare lived and worked in England, a kingdom, and died there in 1616 --- that's 160 years prior to our Declaration of Independence. Shakespeare had no opinions at all about American politics, not in 1616 and certainly not in 2007; so any spin of Cymbeline into a comment on George W. Bush is pretty silly. If you want real Shakespeare, look elsewhere; but then you'd miss Martha Plimpton. |

Don't Miss It! Review by: ricoliv, Dec 5, 2007 |
| This is a wonderful production of Cymbeline, worth seeing if only for the powerful performance of Jonathan Cake as Iachimo. He is one of the few actors on stage whose articulation is so crystal clear that his words are comprehensible even when his back is to the audience. Add to the perfect diction a stunning characterization and you have a first-rate performance. The production itself is a notch below the magnificent (albeit minimalist) ... read more staging which Cheek by Jowl exported from London in the spring, but it is still a treasure-- a coherent presentation of a rather convoluted play. (You may want to read it before you go.) Other contributors have commented on the acoustical problems inherent in the Beaumont so try to get seats close to the stage if you decide to see this remarkable production. |

THE PERFECT PRODUCTION! Review by: GothProf, Nov 27, 2007 |
| What a beautiful production!!! A perfect play about longing and forgiveness - beautiful production and worth every penny! The final moment took my breath away. It is THE perfect image for today's conflict. Lincoln Center, YOU ROCK! (by the way- check out the review dated Nov 19, 2007 By: RALPHIE. He has the WRONG production! Who knows what production he is writing about- but it isn't Lincoln Center's. (Lincoln Center has a poster design by James ... read more McMullen which features a sleeping Imogene). |

DISHONEST SPIN on THE BARD Review by: RALPHIE, Nov 19, 2007 |
| CYMBELINE is a rip-off. It's advertised to be genuine Shakespeare, but we became suspicious with their poster which includes an American flag, an American soldier, and an American eagle similar to the one on early 20th century quarters. (guess what) Shakespeare hasn't got one thing to do with 21st century politics, the war in Iraq, et cetera. William Shakespeare was a good writer -- we all know that --- why trash his work. |

Great production! Recommended!! Review by: NYer, Nov 7, 2007 |
| Just show the play tonight! it was a great play...granted the shakespearean language is difficult to understand. The set was great & the actors are wonderful. Many famous actors are in this production & I would definately recommend this to anyone who can appreciate shakespear or simply to anyone who would like to see a great night of theater. It is a 3 hour production, but the storyline is easy to follow & the ... read more characters are amuzing & enteraining. |

What a waste Review by: dydy, Nov 2, 2007 |
Wonderful, wonderful actors, but if you are not seated in the center of the theatre hall you do not hear what they say half of the times (when they preformed with their back towards you). The Shakespearian English is difficult as it is why make it harder on the viewers? How about using microphones? Why the stage is so dark most of the times? It just makes me want to sleep.
