Treat yourself....fabulous show in every respect. Review by: RPW, Esq., Jul 12, 2007 |
| Saw "Curtains" a few days ago and absolutely LOVED it. It was such a joy watching something that had old fashioned charm, humor and music (I actually left the theater humming...something I haven't done in ages). I've seen just about everything on Broadway these days (straight plays as well as musicals), and this show was certainly one of the top shows of the season. The audience was screaming and jumping out of their seats,... read more, after every production number, something I haven't seen since "Jersey Boys." Run, don't walk, and get tickets for "Curtains" before they have a cast change. To be honest, I did something I basically never do. When I got home I ordered the soundtrack from Amazon, which arrived yesterday, and I've played the CD at least four times so far. What a treat! I would see this show again in a heartbeat, and probably will. |

1950s Musical comedy genre Review by: NormNYC, Jul 6, 2007 |
Wow, after reading all the reviews here, it seems people either really love this play or hate it. I'm kind of in the middle on this one. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. Is it worth the high full price tkts ? ..ummm... NO.
I saw this play with a friend from Australia who was here visiting for the first time. I wanted to treat her to a real Broadway play and it was a toss up between The Pirate Queen and this. ... read more Luckily I didn't pick Pirate Queen as its now closed.
This play is an enjoyable enough throwback to the old 1950s type movies and shows. Too bad the script doesn't quite work. David Hyde Pierce was OK. It was good to see him breaking out of the Niles persona after all those years on the TV hit Frazier. He did an admirable job as the leading actor, but was it that good to get the Tony? I haven't seen all the actors that were nominated, so I can't really compare, but all I guess is that it was not an outstanding year for musical actors. Debra Monk was really good. What a pleasant surprise to see and hear her sing. I had just seen her in a couple of episodes of Grey's Anatomy as George's mother. Who knew she was a Broadway star?
The music and songs were only OK. Nothing that rememberable. The jokes are alright, but again nothing that was really side splitting.
As far as all the comments about the religious jokes, I do remember them but wasn't all that offended by them. This is a musical COMEDY for goodness sakes and everything is fair game in comedy these days. Thanks for those of you who have mentioned it so that people that ARE offended by this type of humor can choose to avoid this play.
I guess I had high expectations before seeing this play and must admit that it didn't live up to those expectations. Still, it was enjoyable enough and if you really like the 1950s musical comedy genre, then you'll enjoy this. I will admit that I was disappointed that I picked this play to take my Australian friend to as her 1st Broadway experience. I should have stuck with the 1st tier BIG shows like Wicked, Hairspray, Phantom or Mamma Mia. |

This Makes the Trip. Hillarious! Review by: Bwayfanatic101, Jun 26, 2007 |
Curtains was a fantastic musical. I left the theater smiling so much that I was happy to stand at the stage door in the rain to get the autographs of the people. The comedy in this show is so great. It is understandable why David Hyde Pierce won the Tony for this show. He was outstanding and his comedic timing was great. Debra Monk, however, stole the show. Her voice and her energy and presence on stage makes her stand out the entire show. I ... read more am still laughing at the jokes and it is 2 weeks later. This is a great show and I would see it again and again. The only thing that is not family appropriate is that the choreography is very explicit. If you can get over sexual lyrics(very little) and sexual choreography, then you will love this show. It cracks at all religions so beware. Come to this show with an open attitude and get ready to laugh! |

Energetic and Entertaining Musical!!! Review by: Katy, Jun 8, 2007 |
| Curtains is fantastic! The entire show is filled with huge production numbers, witty humor, and an amazing cast. The choreography was creative and some of the best I've seen on Broadway in recent years. Although it won't revolutionize musical theater, it's a great show that left the audience extremely satisfied. Curtains mimics the large numbers and lightheartedness of musicals of the 1950s (which makes sense since it's set in 1959), but ... read more is definitely unique in it's energy. The audience clapped seemingly forever after every song, and everyone around me was debating the identity of the murderer during intermission. This show does contain some language and sexual references that are inappropriate for young children, but it's probably equivelent to a PG13 film. SEE THIS SHOW for the excitement and thrill you'll get from the show-stopping numbers, hilarious jokes, and superb cast (including David Hyde Pierce, Debra Monk, Karen Ziemba, and Jason Danieley). From someone who has seen Jersey Boys, The Producers, Chicago, and numerous other Broadway shows, Curtains is ranked at the top. |

STAMP OUT THE BIGOTS! --- LOWER THE CURTAIN! Review by: frankiePA, Jun 3, 2007 |
Thanks to "PAT" for pointing out verbatum the anti-Catholic and anti-religious bigotry in this show. Might I add there's a similarly offensive line of bigotry, uttered by the same actor, against the Jewish religion. These offenses are just tossed in, like cockroaches in your salad. There's no excuse, and no point.
If this were a great show, the insults would leave a bitter aftertaste. But this isn't a great show. It's mediocre at best.... read more. Thus I strongly recommend CUTRAINS for both bigots and people who like limp and lousy musicals. |

How can a show that so blatantly ridicules faith be nominated for Best Musical Review by: Pat, Jun 2, 2007 |
"Those fucking Catholics, they really know how to put on a show. I had an epiphany during the Eucharist !" These words were uttered by Edward Hibbert playing Chris Belling. How can a show that so blatantly ridicules faith be nominated for Best Musical by both the Tonys and te Drama Desk Awards? People of good conscience, Catholic or otherwise, should stay far away from the poor taste and ignorance showcased in Curtains ... read more !

Review by: Debbie, May 29, 2007 |
| Thoroughly enjoyed this show. Loved the big, old fashioned musical - lots of comedy, song, and dance and great performances by all - David Hyde Pierce and Debra Monk in particular. There were no slow spots. I was smiling from beginning to end. |

Fantastic show! Must see! Review by: candiceanne, May 23, 2007 |
| After reading some of these reviews, I'm pretty sure I saw a different show! Along the same vein as Drowsy Chaperone/Crazy For You, but I actually thought it was better. Tons of fun, fast-paced, great music and dance numbers. It has kind of an "old movie" feel, with a great ensemble cast instead of two main leads and everyone trying to fall in love while putting on a show and solving a mystery! Excellent show; highly recommended! |

| Saw the play Mother's Day and was surprised by its quality. The show is energetic and funny. The cast is outstanding, more of an ensemble than a one man showpiece, and all the players seem to be enjoying themselves. It moved at a steady pace and kept me interested throughout. |

Review by: Penny, May 6, 2007 |
| I saw Curtains March 25 (I believe), a Sunday matinee. While I think David Hyde Pierce is an excellent actor and wonderful entertainer, I found the show very boring, with very forgettable songs and dancing. I did not like the score or the script. The show didn't have originality and no heart in the performances. The spotlight dance at the end was terrible; they tried copying Hairspray's final dance, performed by Harvey Fierstein, which was ... read more superb. No comparison at all. I couldn't wait to leave the theatre and get the Greyhound bus back home. |
