Not a bad night out, Review by: chrisck, Sep 19, 2007 |
| I enjoyed "Curtains" for what it was (and happily paid only half price)--some good dancing and entertaining acting, but mostly mediocre songs. However I was really bored by the stereotypical gay director (particularly because the same actor played the closety gay radio personality in "Frasier" along with David Hyde Pierce so it felt at times like a "Frasier" repeat). My objections aren't based on political correctness--it's just that the ... read more flaming gay schtick is sooooo cheesy and cheap to do. The dumb blonde chorus girl is also pretty boring (and has been done with more of a wink at the cliche in such musicals as "Guys & Dolls.") A lot of the jokes in this musical were heavy handed and not all that witty. Pierce added lightness and charm. As a play-within-a-play musical, "Curtains" is no "Kiss Me, Kate," but it has its moments. |

Not top-tier but worth seeing Review by: PJBob, Aug 27, 2007 |
| I saw this show despite the bad reviews it got from some people. I really like David Hyde Pierce and the chance to see him live outweighed some of the negativity I've read. Was the show wonderful? No. Was it worth the price I paid to see it? Yes. Some of the music and dialogue are lame--no question--BUT much of it is good and at times quite funny. Debra Monk was wonderful despite some bad dialogue. Jason Daniely and Karen Ziemba were ... read more very good--didn't like his hairstyle or cheesy moustache but such a voice! The ensemble was quite good. DHP was very good and my only complaint was his off-on Boston accent. As a Bostonian, I did cringe at times when his accent went somewhere else. |

Great show--go see it! Review by: Joanie, Aug 11, 2007 |
| I think that the ones of you who said they were bored by "Curtains" must have GONE to "Curtains" hoping to be bored (there is a lot of hatred in the Broadway world, kids). I have seen the show twice, and at both performances the entire audience was engrossed and enraptured within the first five minutes. Laughs are HUGE and almost constant. The music is delightful and VERY tuneful ("I Miss the Music" is the best ballad written for the Broadway ... read more stage in a decade or more). The cast is phenomenally talented, and David Hyde Pierce gives the most beautifully underplayed, hilarious, and almost heartbreakingly vulnerable performance I have ever seen in a musical, period. At the end of both performances, the audience was ecstatic and cheering, and the buzz afterwards was tremendously happy. If anyone was bored, not excited, or not moved by the performance, they must have had an awfully bad dinner---or seen Spring Awakening at a matinee. |

DHP....Give that Tony Award Back! Review by: DramaMama, Aug 6, 2007 |
I SO want my money back. This show was insipid -- at best.
I was looking forward to seeing this show. That lasted about 20 minutes after the curtain rose. Then I started slumping from absolute boredom and from being insulted from the stupidity that this show instilled.
Most performances were fine...all very two dimensional characters with no depth, and no possibility at growth of any sort. How they would give a Tony Award for ... read more this is beyond me....it's not that he was bad (except for his horrid and lapsing accent) it just wasn't demanding...in any way. DHP really needs to give that award to Jonathan Groff from Spring Awakening, really!
There were dance numbers just to fill the music. The story was boring and insulting to my intelligence. Mind you, I'm not opposed to a bit of fluff on B'way (I loved Millie and Drowsy Chaperone) but this was just an absence of anything that I could possibly care about. |

Typical Review by: , Aug 5, 2007 |
| I chose this one because my son was with me and he likes David Hyde Pierce. There is no other reason to see this show and David Hyde Pierce is not all that good. Typical dancing, no catchy tunes, bad story, no substance. Many boring inappropriate songs. |

Fabulous, funny and would see it again. Review by: Tre, Jul 30, 2007 |
| Curtains was wonderful! I took my 3 grandchildren and they just loved it. The whole cast was wonderful, they are just so talented. We had the stand-in for the female lead but she was good too. David Hyde Pierce was the nicest person standing out in the rain and signed autographs after the play. He thank everyone for coming to see Curtains. |

Curtains; a contemporary Shakespeare Review by: Mutt, Jul 29, 2007 |
In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet says, "The play's the thing wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king." The idea of a play within a play to catch a murderer did not begin or end with Shakespeare. Curtains utilizes the same device, except it's David Hyde Pierce as Detective Frank Cioffi who pursues the murderer(s). And along the way, there's humor, dancing, and singing galore. Pierce deserves his Emmy, and all the major characters are ... read more marvelously cast, and promote the double plot with high energy. Every theatre goer knows Les Miserables, The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera, but for a wonderful musical comedy, with outstanding choreography, Curtains flys below the radar, and is a smash. I'll already seen it twice, the second time with friends, when both of had first row seats. At the end, My friends gave me a two thumbs up sign. I believe everyone will give a two thumbs up after watching curtains. Looking forward to getting the CD. |

Leave the kids at home. Review by: Southernvisitor, Jul 13, 2007 |
| David Pierce has a line in Curtains where he says "I can't believe what I am hearing". That's the way I felt about Curtains. The outstanding acting, dancing, and music was marred by profanity and vulgarities. This play was set in the 50's I believe which was a much more innocent time in the arts and wasn't necessary at all to the story line. It seemed to be added for shock or to get a few laughs. The dance scenes have plenty of interlocking ... read more sequences between the girls and boys as well and detract from what I hoped would be a good time out with the family. In “Kansasland” the men hold chair legs out in front of them which is supposed to portray a male erection. There is painting of a naked lady in the bar room of the “Kansasland” set. The mermaids in “In the Same Boat” are very scantly clad as well as the Indian girl in “Kansasland”. I would suggest to leave the kids at home if you want to see it. It’s not a good show for the family. |

Entertaining, light musical comedy with a terrific cast... Review by: NYC theater-goer, Jul 13, 2007 |
| While "Curtains" is certainly not going to win a Pulitzer Prize, it certainly gives you your money's worth of hummable melodies and big production numbers. The key roles are filled with performers who can sing and dance with the best of them. David Hyde Pierce is very funny and winning. My favorite number was "A Hard Act to Follow," a Ginger Rogers-Fred Astaire tribute of sorts, with Hyde Pierce starting out seeming to be an awkward, ... read more beginner dancer and then ending up dancing with a pro. I do think the first act started off a bit slow, with some corny lines, but the second act really made up for it. Enjoyed the costumes, choreography and the wonderful sense of camaraderie the cast seems to share. Go expecting an entertaining, light musical comedy, not something on the order of "Les Miserables" and you won't be disappointed. |
