CryBaby really made me cry! Review by: Jimmyboy, Apr 25, 2008 |
| Really mediocre. Doesnt come close to what the movie pulls off. Some decent talent (they need to get rid of the lead female) but overall no real standouts. Will probably do well with out of towners looking for tickets at TKTS. Unless you get a real steep discount(almost free) avoid it at all costs. Broadway aint what it used to be - so much garbage! |

Don't Waste Your Money Review by: Meg, Apr 23, 2008 |
| OMG - this was the worst Broadway show I've ever seen. It was a cross between Grease and Hairspray but doesn't even begin to compare with those two shows (Hairspray is one of my favorites after Wicked). Even though the tickets were cheap, it wasn't worth it. My friend wanted to walk out during the second half but I insisted on getting my $54 worth(less)! |

Surprisingly good! Review by: wcoyote96, Apr 23, 2008 |
I saw "Cry Baby" last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The music is catchy, the lyrics are brilliantly ironic, the cast works very hard and the choreography is the best I've seen all season (including "In the Heights"). Not sure how those dancers manage 8 shows a week! While the lead actors are not exactly magnetic personalities, Christopher Hanke, Harriet Harris, and Alli Mauzey steal the show in supporting roles. The ... read more plot and concept are by no means revelatory, but this is a lot of fun in the theater and I would definitely recommend this show to anyone with a sense of humor. On the night I attended, the audience ate it up and there was thunderous applause at the end. Go see it while it's still fresh! |

REBEL WITHOUT A BIRDIE is dancing, singing splendor! Review by: RichardA, Apr 22, 2008 |
What fun! This is the best dance musical I've seen in years, and the irreverent references shock and amuse. Great songs. Hunky cast members. A story that I could actually follow, even though plot resolution seemed to be tied up very quickly in the last few minutes instead of evolving at a more natural pace. Ultimately, a message fit for the whole family. And the marvelous Harriet Harris in a major role. What more could I ask for? This is BYE BYE ... read more BIRDIE meets REBEL WITH A CAUSE, and I see TONY written all over it. RichardA |

Cry Baby is fantastic! Will be a Tony contender in 2008 Review by: Mr. Showman, Apr 21, 2008 |
Saw the show and really loved it. To many people try and compare a show like this to Grease, Hairspray etc. Most of these shows started with mixed reviews and eventually got momentum. They all are good and should not be compared. Cry Baby is original and has a great cast. James Syder was fantastic as was Harriet Harris. The dancing was great and the show was so entertaining. I would highly recommend it. Go see it, you will no be ... read more sorry JB |

Review by: , Apr 21, 2008 |
| Not sure why anyone would dislike this show - good, young energetic cast, great dancing, funny dialogue, clever lyrics with a nice portion of John Waters dementia kept. Somewhat derivative of Hairspray and Grease; not quite as good as Hairspray but a much better musical than Grease. Only exception was the female lead, who was a bit scratchy vocally. Maybe the folks who didn't like it were from out of town. |

Hated it Review by: , Apr 21, 2008 |
| I thought the show was horrible- Not worth seeing even with discount tickets. I saw Hairspray and thought that was great but if I wasn't hoping the 2nd half would be better I would have left. It seemed like I was watching a high school musical. |

Weak show, not worth the ticket price. Review by: , Apr 18, 2008 |
Sadly, there is not much to recommend this show. The lead actors are weak; the songs are predictable and uninspired; the sets, with the exception of a couple of pieces, are too small for the stage. The best parts about this show are Rob Ashford's athletic choreography and Alli Mauzey's portrayal of Lenora. Unfortunately, even these moments can't maintain their exhuberance for the duration of the show. You are always aware ... read more that you are watching "choreography", and the character of Lenora completely fizzles out after her big number...the highlight of the 2+ hours you spend watching the stage. Overall, this musical presents nothing to make you care about any of the characters, the songs are completely forgetful, and the performances are weak.

I did not fall in love Review by: bway100, Apr 18, 2008 |
| Like Grease, the show takes place in the 50's where bad boy meets good girl, and they fall in love. But this is a John Waters creation, where he has developed bizarre characters, as he did in Hairspray. But unlike Hairspray (one of my favorite musicals), it did not have a story-line or music that I thought about after the show was over. Although sometimes things were clever & funny, the story was not new or refreshing. The one person I liked ... read more in the show was the lunatic girl, played by Alli Mauzey. |

A Fun Night Out! Review by: Harry, Apr 16, 2008 |
This is a fun musical, period! It's nothing new or surprising, but it is funny, irreverent, risque, and sometimes demented. Hey, this is John Waters. The tunes are old and familiar, with a couple of exceptions, but the lyrics are original and get right to the point - be prepared. Again, this is John Waters. The dancing is the best part, with a prison-scene number that is original and extremely well done. The acting is good, with most ... read more of the better performances coming from the supporting cast. The lead character is no Johnny Depp, which may disappoint some fans of the movie. The set designs and costumes are typical for this kind of story (the designers should have utilized the unique aspects of the Baltimore landscape). The story looks as if it could have been taking place in just about any urban area of that time period; it looks too generic. For the most part this is a good fun-musical for adults; not great, but entertaining and worth seeing.

Surprisingly fun and good! Review by: KB, Apr 13, 2008 |
| I had heard this was horrible but I wanted to see for myself. I really liked it! I thought it had some of the best choreography out of most of the musicals i have seen (the majority on broadway right now). The cast was good, but I felt like the supporting actor and actress were the starts and stole the show. I would reccommend if you liked grease or hairspray, because it is that type of show. It is very funny as well. I think it needs a little ... read more work, but not the trainwreck people make it seem. My cons were that the singing isnt top notch, and the songs arent very memorable. |

Tears for Cry Baby Review by: irishmom, Apr 13, 2008 |
Saw it April 3 - We had high expectations as we enjoyed the movie - oddly enough none of the songs from the movie are in this production. Even the whole reason he is called 'Cry Baby' is not included - how come no focus on his lacrymal glands? The show just came to a screeching halt whenever the Baldwin character was on stage. I liked the quirky characters of Pepper and Wanda, and Hatchett Face from the movie - but the most memorable ... read more musical numbers were no where in sight. Glad we didn't pay full price. It was a major let down. The folks in our row seemed to echo our reviews. Too bad, it could have been great. John Waters where are you? Can't you save this Turkey Point turkey? |

Worth the trip to the city Review by: bobbilo, Apr 12, 2008 |
| We had heard people walked out of the show earlier and had low expectations today, but the show was fantastic! The songs were different--definitely showed you can make a song about ANYTHING! (and if you've seen it, you KNOW what I mean!)--and there were a lot of 'laugh out loud' moments which were a lot of fun. We went with teenage girls who loved it as much as we did. Definitely a fun show and worth the price of admission. |

Have already purchased tickets for a second time. Review by: SeesEverything, Apr 11, 2008 |
I've heard the show has gone through a lot of changes since the previews started. The show I saw was GREAT! Was actually pleasantly suprised. I consider the subversive version of Grease (which is a show I happen to despise). They kept enough of the John Waters coolness, creepiness and dirtiness. The cast works their asses off. I usually have issues with everything I see, but my only issues with ths one is that a couple of the early ... read more songs are a bit long. Otherwise, it is a fun, slightly demented show. |
