Some Great Acting, But Harsh Story - For Theater Buffs Only Review by: BroadwayBabySawIt, Apr 22, 2010 |
| We were looking forward to seeing this play, having heard rave reviews from friends in London. But we have to say that may be the London audiences saw something in it that we didn't. The production is stark but lovely, the costumes work, there are 2 stellar performances from Owen Teale and the jilted husband and Anna Chancellor as the wife who left him. But something does not gel here, it may be that the story is too harsh or the ... read more manipulative behavior on all sides just gets too hard to take. May be it's the lack of an intermission, and 90 minutes on hard seats is tough on the lower back. May be it's the lack of sexual chemistry between any of the characters, in a play based on sexual tension, in the past and in the play's now. May be it's not believing that the younger actor, Michael Burke, as the new husband, or as a man who supposed to be so ill (he never really looks ill). May be it's all of the above. But we were hoping for a daring evening of theater, and what we got was sturdy acting technique, but not a hint of danger or risk. Not sure why, may be waiting a year to bring this production from London to Brooklyn was a mistake and the juice is all gone. See it for 2 great actors working hard to tell their stories, but we think that you see it only if you are a theater buff. Don't take anyone not into theater to this one, it's not for them, and they will keep checking their watches/cellphones for the time. |

Harsh and compelling, amazingly acted Review by: BAMfan, Apr 18, 2010 |
| This is a mesmerizing production. The play is harsh and raw and psychological and even funny. The three performances are excellent, and the play moves forward with brutal momentum. The details of the relationships are of another era but they are emotionally real, and that makes the play feel modern. |
