Dream Cast-Brilliant Concept-Insightful Dialogue-But Kinda Slow? Review by: Driver8, Mar 11, 2008 |
| I could be wrong.....but my take on this was top shelf cast in service of an average play, barring some truly outstanding components. Conversations is exactly what it is..... Lotsa people sitting around talking....not much plot advancement...or even complete character development, save for a few of the parts. The concept of bridging the roman empire to today, using a period set, but slightly more modern, though non descript costumes ... read more is brilliant. Much of the dialogue is insightful, thought provoking and occasionally dazzling and beautiful. And most everyone in the cast is wonderful; though I still felt Dennehey was somewhat undervalued. This could be after seeing him in two of the greatest productions in ten years (Death of a Salesman, Long Day's Journey Into Night) Quinn and Straithern are pitch perfect. Tucci's one scene is totaling engaging. Grifasi delivers the speeches with the play that epitomizes THE play with skill and heartbreak. Only Gloria Ruben really failed to do anything but provide a dull dud. See it for the performances and the insightful dialogue. Don't expect much beyond intellectual musings though..... |
