Unbearably tedious Review by: ccaggiano, Apr 20, 2010 |
| The show centers around four interchangeable couples spending an eternity...er, night at a particular nightclub. And therein lies the two central problems with the show: the characters are characterless and the setting is stagnant. The entire show seems to consist of a never-ending succession of characters meeting up, splitting up, making each other jealous, and reconciling. Again and again. Pas de deux after pas de deux. Tharp hasn't included ... read more enough of a distinction among the four couples to make us care who they are or bother to make the effort to create such distinctions ourselves. Could she possibly be making some trenchant social comment about the interchangeable nature of relationships and the mind-numbing tedium of serial monogamy? If so, she's succeeded admirably. |

Not so good, a big disappointment1 Review by: Judy Marie, Apr 18, 2010 |
| This was a pretty big disappointment...didn't realize that there was no speaking, very little singing, only repetitive dancing to Sinatra songs. About 50 songs, same dancing to each one. Of course, there were a couple great moments, but wouldn't really recommend this show. Too bad Frank, we love your music! |

Review by: meg, Apr 16, 2010 |
| Extremely disappointing show. Despite the amazing sounds of the Orchestra coupled with classic Sinatra, there was just no magic to the show. Choreography did not fit the songs and fact that there is simply no acting made this one of the worst shows I've attended. It's simply one song after another (34 in total) with no speaking parts. We couldn't even begin to interpret what ACT 2 was meant to be about. Save your money and go see something........ read more.anything else |

Review by: Big Cheese, Apr 2, 2010 |
| This show packs a lot of energy from start to finish. The best dancing I have ever seen on the stage. There is not much of a story, but you get to know the dancers very well anyway. This is different from your average broadway musical. If you think you are going to see "Phantom" you will be disappointed. But if you like Frank, and like top-tier dancing, then you will love this show. |

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! Review by: Robin Laurie, Mar 22, 2010 |
Although, not a Sinatra or dance diehard, I was completely mesmerized throughout the entire show by the dancing and the music! The talent of the dancers surpassed my expectations - how do they move like that I kept asking myself, and the band was great too! I would highly recommend seeing this show, and doubt that you will be disappointed! Robin Laurie |

A great experience, not ot be missed! Review by: aviva , Mar 21, 2010 |
| This was an amazing experience. Twyla Tharp is a genius and Sinatra's voice with a live 19 piece band is not to be missed. If you love dance, you will be mesmerized and thrilled. I would highly recommend this show to anyone. It was one of the highlights of the new theater season for me and my friends. You won't be disappointed. |

A Broadway Show Without Actors??? Review by: Mighty Mo, Mar 20, 2010 |
| How can you have a show on Broadway without actors? There was no apparent story, just song after song with modern dancing that had nothing to do with the era. If you come all of the way to New York, they could at least give you live singing! And what is up with all of the women in their underwear? The only redeeming part of the whole show was "My Way" and "New York New York" to close out, which worked only because the first was ... read more ballroom and the second was a chorus line. Ugh! |

Luck be a lady! Review by: SamJoy, Mar 16, 2010 |
| I really enjoyed this show. I cannot think of a better way to spend an evening than listening to the vocals of Frank Sinatra and watching these amazing dancers move the way they do. They really are incredible - such power, energy and grace. I would recommend this show to anyone! |

Let Down Review by: magnolia, Mar 15, 2010 |
| I could not agree more with previous reviews. I was extremely disappointed. It became obviouse after the first 5 minutes that this show is a bust. What a waste of talent and music. The fact that Sinatra's voice was "dubbed" in and definitely there was no story line was such a let down. What were they thinking? |

Far cry from my expectations--be warned about the hype if you really love Sinatra's music and appreciate what Tharp has been capable of in the past. Review by: JYC, Mar 13, 2010 |
Staggering disappointment due to complete mis-casting and unintersting, overly acrobatic and repetitive choreography--except for a few seconds of true Tharp gems, but amounting, unfortunately, to less than a minute out of the whole show. It seemed a travesty to be using Frank Sinatra's music for this production, which could almost have been a parody. I had splurged on this because of how much I love Sinatra's music and how ... read more much I've been moved by Tharp's choreography and was really looking forward to it. I am stunned at how bad this was. The lead female dancers were so masculine and lacking any of the cool, yet womanly femme fatale self-possession evocative of Sinatra's music. They mostly lacked grace as well. In "The Summer Wind" and "Come Fly with Me," the female dancer seemed more like Tarzan than anything evocative of the actual songs. She had an overblown aggressive attitude, which came off as obnoxious, such when she pretended to shoot off 2 guns and blow off the smoke--it was like watching a bad charicature, just as when she took some gorrilla-like steps in the second act...just unbelievably lacking in taste, and not fitting to the music. She also often had a maniacal smile on her face, completely counter to the mood of the songs. I could hardly believe this had been approved by the Sinatra family. It seemed like a cash-cow for Tharp and everyone else involved. Another female lead looked 12 years old--no shapely womanliness whatsoever--and was dressed like one of the kids from "The King and I." Putting a Sinatra signature Fedora hat on her head, at one point, just came off as a cheap trick that still failed to embue her with any vibe having anything to do with Sinatra songs. She was simply mis-cast. Another of the female leads would be better suited for Rizzo in "Grease," hardly any femininity. I mean Sinatra loved Ava Gardner, for heaven's sake--not that we should expect someone just like her, but someone with at least some degree of the womanly qualities his songs evoke, with some fluidity and actual sexiness, which is often better achieved through subtlety instead of grotesque movements such as inexplicably abound in this production. There was also little flow in the dancing, which had undue aggressiveness so much of the time. The version of "That's Life" was such a far cry from the original with Baryshnikov--not that I was expecting anything near that--but it was so extreme in the harshness, disjointedness, and crudeness that it was unpleasant to watch. You can have bold, raw movements, but on a professional stage it should still have finesse. The male leads would also be better suited for other parts. One dancer does a number in his underwear and it made me think Sinatra would be rolling over in his grave. It was like something out of Monty Python, he was more of a gymnast/weight lifter type and his very squat stature just didn't fit the part even though he could execute the movements, but he didn't embody the presence of the song. The costumes were neither beautiful nor interesting and often were not fitting for the numbers. I liked how the ceiling of the dance hall room on stage at one point was lowered, like in the spirit of bringing down the house, when the dancing was supposed to be at a high point, but the dancing failed to live up to the spirit. The best aesthetic element to the whole show was the title graphic. That was beautiful and fitting, but it's pretty sad that that was basically the only aesthetically pleasing thing of the show. The band members were great, though the vocalist sometimes went a little too much into Mariah Carey-type warbling and hand movements. The people in front of me and behind me (who were older than me) shared a lot of my views and did not like the show at all. In the front center orchestra, where I was sitting, there was little to no applause throughout the show, and one person walked out, as I almost did. If you just want to see something on Broadway with the big names of Sinatra and Tharp, then you may not be disappointed but if you really love Sinatra and know what Tharp has been capable of, then be warned about the hype. |

Not to be Recommended Review by: ER, Mar 12, 2010 |
| We love Frank Sinatra and like the idea of seeing a Broadway show with his songs but unfortunately it was a disappointment for many reasons: this show is all about dancing but the problem is that the music and dancing did not fit well together, choreography was just ok, no story, no speaches, female singer was good but it's expected to have a great male singer to perform Sinatra's songs. Bottom line: My friends and I do Not recommend this show. |

Very disappointed - definitely not Movin Out Review by: , Mar 6, 2010 |
Very disappointed after having loved Movin Out, Tharp's Billy Joel show. A major problem is that the Sinatra songs, while great in and of themselves, simply do not have enough changes in rhythm, mood, tempo, so I found myself getting bored, as the dances also did not really vary enough. Choreography, except for dances for "Betsy" and "Marty" (see below) was not mesmerizing. Also didn't think a few of the main dancers were that good.... read more. Particularly Holly Farmer (Babe) who, though gorgeous, does not have much charisma, somewhat heavy footed (always planting her feet in preparation for her next move) and cannot alter her expression from its fixed smile. John Selya should be applauded for being able to partner her in the lifts. The pair who was absolutely marvelous was Laura Mead (Betsy) and Charlie Nesbya-Hodges (Marty) who are superb dancers with great ability to put characterization into their dance. Ditto for Karine Plantadit (Kate), who was also a dancer with personality. Don't think this show will make it. |

Let Down Review by: lkkalj, Mar 4, 2010 |
I saw the show Wednesday, March 3rd. I have to say I was very disappointed. The cast of dancers was extremely talented, the big band was awesome and the female vocalist had a sultry voice. The problem I had with the play was that there was no dialogue, no story line and the dancing did not go with the music. At intermission, nearly everyone voiced their dissatisfaction with the event. A lot of the audience came with expectations of ... read more it being similar to "Moving Out" or "Jersey Boys". It was not. |

Review by: Cathy, Mar 4, 2010 |
| We were at the March 1 opening. I found the orchestra and the music to be great and most entertaining though the entire play takes place without any change of scenery and no words spoken, therefore the dancing seemed repetitious. I found myself bored after about the 5th song. The second act takes place in the same scenery. If you are a true Sinatra fan you will enjoy the music. |
