A..very..long...evening .of..excellent..theatre..But let me think about itfor a while. Review by: Diract 66, Jan 25, 2010 |
| I agree with the previous opinions on this play.
It is a long play with no intermission.
It is 1 hour and 50 minutes long. Also be prepared for long pauses in this play that may make you restless. I noticed that some people wanted this play to move faster. The premise is very realistic to acting students who will relate to the exercises throughout the play and think ' Is this acting, when do we get to the real stuff?' A lot of laughs ... read more in this play and also some very serious soul searching by the characters. As the humor picks up, so does the intensity of the play. The best part of this experience is the wonderful acting and the chance to look to the other actors facial expressions and reactions during those long pauses. If you leave the theater thinking, why do they have to count to ten, then you don't get it. A very interesting evening of theatre, with many short scenes that make you want to know more about the characters than these little bits and pieces. |

A rare experience. Will see it again. Review by: Tim, Oct 25, 2009 |
While I have to agree with rgdave on a couple of points, including the assertion that this play is probably not for everyone, it is without a doubt the single most entertaining play I've seen in a long time, and I see a fair amount of NY theatre. Circle Mirror Transformation captures the essence of why I bother to go to the theatre at all, and what I hope to see when I go - subtle and brilliant direction that draws out of talented actors ... read more deep human feelings and gestures that illuminate the script. Also, it was funny as hell. The playwright, director, and five actors worked on this piece for two years before presenting it, and what is obvious is how far they were all able to go in their exploration of text and character. Too bad more theatre can't have the luxury of a longer rehearsal process; it would be a more satisfying experience . . . for me anyway. I would say that, the night I went, half the audience was howling with laughter up to the very touching end, and half were quiet. How many of that half were perplexed, I won't hazard a guess. But I overheard a crew member say that, during one performance, an exasperated audience member piped up with "what's so funny?" People go to the theatre for different reasons. Some are dazzled by sets and lights and razzmatazz, and there's plenty of that out there. Others crave, but rarely get to witness, something simpler, more stripped down, more essential - talented actors behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances. Anything else is clutter. If you happen to be in the latter category, this play is not to be missed.

Quirky and strange, not for everyone Review by: rgdave, Oct 2, 2009 |
Quirky little show that I felt strangely indifferent about at the end - I didn't hate it nor did I particularly like it. Quick synopsis: 5 characters in a six week drama class at a community center in Vermont. The teacher, a middle aged New Ager type, structures the class around cliched improvisational creative drama exercises that will be familiar to anyone who has taken Drama 101. So they sit in a circle. The exercises act as a mirror. And ... read more they make some transformations. Ta-dah. For one hour and fifty minutes. It's kind of meditative, with a lot of subtle acting. In fact, because there isn't a whole lot going on, plot wise, there's a lot of opportunity to focus on glances and gestures. But whether that's enough to carry you through to the end depends on kind of plays you like. I kept looking at my watch, and would probably have left at intermission had there been one. While I didn't particularly like it, it seemed like a number of other audience members did. |
