Revisionist Cinderella: Mostly works Review by: rskblueyes, Feb 6, 2013 |
Growing up in the 1960s I used to look forward to the yearly broadcast of Cinderella starring Leslie Ann Warren. I also have the dvd of the Julie Andrews and Brandy versions. I couldnt wait to see this show. This is a wonderfully staged production. The sets, costumes, special effects, orchestrations, and chorreography are the best Ive seen in years. Every performer in this show is top notch. My major beef with the show is the new book. ... read more Most of it actually works, however I feel the whole peasant revolution and the subplot with Gaberielle and Jean Michael didnt. Since when does Cinerdella have a sympethic step sister? Back to the good. I most applaud the 2 leads who song wonderfully. Anne Harrida was a hoot as well as Harriet Harris. Great seeing these ladies on stage again. Victoria Clark also great in her dual roles. This is enjoyable show for all!! |

Magical and engaging Review by: , Feb 3, 2013 |
| We had a wonderful time. Took our 9 year old granddaughter who is still enthusiastically talking about it to us and her friends. Stellar performances from a terrific cast. Visually stunning costumes, set, lighting. It's still in previews so there will be some revisions, nips and tucks. Loved the full orchestra (unusual now on Broadway) and the newly revamped, lush orchestrations. Yes, the script has been changed and songs from the R&H trunk ... read more have been added. All the wonderful original songs are still intact. Those who will be disappointed that the story isn't the same as the original need to do their homework before attending this or any show. This is no secret and there is endless information about this available. I'm reminded of those who were horrified that Mary Poppins, the musical, wasn't the same as the movie. It offered a darker side as in the original story. I would imagine that many children (and adults) will not have seen any previous productions of this so won't be offended and disappointed because it's not the same. They'll have nothing to compare it too. Hopefully it will be a new and engaging experience for them and for most all of us. Of course, as with anything, there will be widely varying opinions. For us, this was a winner and we plan on taking other family members. Looking forward to experiencing it once again. |

Terrific Show if you don't mind the "Twist" Review by: THNJ, Feb 3, 2013 |
| Yes - it's true. They updated the show to give it a social conscience, however the message would have been directed to children, who would be to young to "get it". She doesn't lose her slipper when leaving the ball? That's when the plot went really awry. The did inject some humor into the story geared to the adults. While I would have preferred they stick with the original progression of the story, the sets were elaborate, the songs/performing ... read more fantastic, & costumes fantastic. All in all a beautiful, magical performance. Note - children under 8 or so seemed to be quite bored. |

This mess can be saved Review by: saratogagal, Feb 2, 2013 |
| I went to relive my childhood and see a wonderful R&H show. It was a hot mess. HORRIBLE. This is not R&H Cinderella but Douglas Beane's Cinderella. The stepsister is in love with the revolutionary who wants to overthrow the King (no prince charming) and takes her on a first date to a soup kitchen. He shouts the poor are starving while the rich have a ball. There were about 200 little girls dressed as Cinderella with their mothers or ... read more grandmas for their first theater experience and they got this garbage. IT CAN BE SAVED. The performers are wonderful and try their best. They have just been given a horrible script. Beane also changed some Hammerstein lyrics to go with his New Age vision.Go back to the original and let the little girls have a sweet first Broadway experience. |

Review by: Dick, Jan 31, 2013 |
| a good solid show--not great, but not bad. I question the marketing to young children since the first scene has a very large and evil looking monster and the fact that there are many many political overtones. Nonetheless, there were many many children in the audience when I saw it, and they were very very well behaved. Harriet Harris and Victoria Clark are Tony worthy |

Worst show I have EVER seen on Broadway!!!! (beautiful sung and acted though) Review by: judyofsuburbia, Jan 30, 2013 |
I absolutely hated this show. I have never been so disappointed. Don't get me wrong the songs were sung beautifully and the actors were fantastic! The problem was they screwed with the whole story. Unlike Wicked or Spamalot where they showed you what went on behind the scenes Cinderella on Broadway TOTALLY CHANGED THE STORY. She Grabs the shoe out of his hand and runs off with it for starters and then we all had to sit through political ... read more rhetoric about unfair elections, and the rich getting richer, etc etc...The prince's parents are dead and he has an evil advisor (which makes him a king) little girls will be bored and confused...... HORRIBLE |
