Forgettable; Bland
Review by: , Jul 4, 2009

Chicago didn't live up to what I expected it to be. The set was dull and ordinary. Some of the songs don't seem to belong in the production like "Mr. Cellophane". The actors were wonderful but overall the whole thing was just bland. There are so many other shows that are superior and a lot more enjoyable so don't feel bad if you skip this one!

I saw the Sunday matinee show. Excellent show. Songs were well executed and every cast membe fit the role. The story also moved along well. Worth the money, especially for discounted prices offered by Broadway Box. It was unusual to be able to see the band during the whole show, but it seemed to be a plus. It was nice afterwards to see each cast member introduced by name at the end of the show. Tom Wopat's performance stood out to me the ... read more most, but everyone was excellent.

Surprisingly flat for such a famous production

I have to agree with the reviewers here who give this show less than stellar marks. It's not a bad show, but the intrinsic fun and quality and of the music and story line are seriously diluted by (i) some suspect cast choices, especially the lawyer, (ii) the very minimalist set and costumes, and (iii) just decent singing and acting. A great way to see this show's limitations is to compare it with Phantom of the Opera, both ... read more of which are similarly long-running, famous, well-received musicals. Phantom has incredibly talented singers, lavish sets and costimes, and very engaging actors; Chicago's weaknesses become very apparent by comparison. Again, it's not a bad show--I'm always a little annoyed by people who eviscerate a show simply because it didn't suit them--but I would recommend Phantom and several more recent show over Chicago.

I can't believe what I'm reading in the some of the reviews here.. did you watch it with your eyes closed and listen with large pieces of popcorn in your ears?! I've seen this twice now on Broadway - once in 2006, again in September 2008 (when Roxy was the best I ever ever witnessed!), and am going again with a friend on 1st May. I absolutely love it. I smile ALL the way through, I love the music, the energy, the orchestra, everything! And the ... read more simple setting is there for a reason - it WORKS! Lighting and sound - fantastic. Go! Great show, fabulous Mama Morton!

This was a great night's entertainment. I went with my whole family, and even my 10-year-old brother enjoyed it. Velma Kelley is excellent, Roxie Hart is fair, Billy Flynn is great, but Mama Morton takes the cake with a fabulous performance of "When You're Good To Mama". There is only a 14-piece orchestra, but most people play multiple instruments and they have a delightful sound, most notably the trumpet soloist. The ensemble is spot-on, with ... read more perfectly synchronized choreography throughout the musical. Chicago is a fantastic show, don't miss it!

Not the best show out there! I loved the movie, even know the lyrics by heart and went with high hopes that the Broadway show would be great. It wasn't, not for me, my husband or the other two couples who went with us. With such a terrific story the production could have been more theatrical, grand, the dancing was not impressive, the voices were OK but not so great either (except for the lady playing Mama Morton), zero costs on wardrobe, plain ... read more scenography ... the songs are always going to be great but the play lacks everything else.

I went to see that show with my boyfriend and the is not the show to go with your date. Acting was horable. I expect broadway show to be high energy, in sync performance. Very disappointed. Could not wait till it was over.

What a Fantastic Surprise!

Wow! I had seats all the way over BUT it didn't matter. This show was refreshingly fantastic! I only knew of the movie and having had my fill of it, I was too thrilled about going to see this show but I was TOTALLY wrong. There is so much energy in this show that it just rolls off the stage and envelops you. Great staging!!

Having been to several Broadway shows, this was my only disappointment so far. I usually consider the production value, music (if applicable), and acting. The production is truly the minimum, acting was good, and the music was OK but definitely not memorable. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.

I first found out about this show when the movie came out in 2002. I saw the movie and loved it. I didn't think it could be any better than that. Then, I saw the Broadway show, which made the movie look mediocre! This is some of the most fun I've ever had at a Broadway show! Go see it.

This is a classic show and will be amazing no matter where you see it in the world - more importantly, the best of the best in Broadway!! Loved it!! Definately more suited to the adult audience or those who have a broader mind and can think outside the box - it's not your 'traditional' lateral thinking musical. Go see it. It's a music see and the whole cast including band was amazing!! the audience feels soo involved all along and you dont ... read more feel like you're just 'watching'... you're part of Chicago! My daughter and I went to NY for her senior trip and was lucky enough to see Chicago. We absolutely loved it! The dancing, singing, acting was excellent. Roxy has the best comedic timing since Lucille Ball! I could watch this over and over again. It was definitely what I had hoped a Broadway show would be! We sat in the front Mezzanine row A and I don't think there could have been any better seats in the entire place! A Broadway classic

This show is a Broadway classic. The dancing and music are amazing, and the minimalist set enable you to focus mostly on the actor's movements and the orchestra's music. The actors are sexy, talented, athletic, and energetic. The music is infectious. I like this show more and more every time i see it.
