Script doesn't do its subject justice Review by: JW, Jan 6, 2013 |
Finally got to see this show before its closing. With all due respect to the theatergoers who loved this show, I was somewhat disappointed. The show was a by-the-numbers biography which sacrificed what was most crucial about Chaplin--the fact that he was a prodigious comedic talent. After leaving the theater, one would be hard-pressed to understand why he was considered a genius. Although the performers, including the actor portraying Chaplin, ... read more stated on numerous occasions that Chaplin was great, very little of his greatness is portrayed on stage. Outside of a few snippets, there is not one complete scene of his performance art. How can one create a show about a movie legend and not show why he's a legend is beyond me. That's just one example of the omissions in this show. But there are others, including the fact that Chaplin was an outstanding musical composer. He composed the scores for his movies. No mention of it in this show. In addition, based on this script, one would think that Chaplin's movie career ended in the early 1940s. In fact, he was still directing and composing in the 1960s. Having noted these negatives, to be fair, I will say this. The performances were outstanding. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the lead performance by Rob McClure is Tony-worthy as is Jenn Colella's performance as columnist Hedda Hopper. Unfortunately, shows that close before the Tony ceremony, normally go away empty-handed. That will probably be the case with "Chaplin," which is closing today.

Would see it again, if I could! Review by: Dianne, Jan 6, 2013 |
| I bought tickets a few months ago for the Saturday performance on January 5th, not realizing that this show would close January 6th. What a shame that this show is closing due to negative reviews by those who are supposedly "in the know." I have been going to Broadway shows for years and Chaplin is one of my favorites. Rob McClure nails it as Chaplin. I went with my 19 year old son, who cried three times during this production. ... read more Critics complained about "black and white." Perhaps that was used on purpose as that was what Chaplin's audiences saw. Sets and staging were great. This proves that you can't listen to the critics. I would see this show again. What a shame that is not possible. |

Fantastic!!!!!!! Review by: Kris, Jan 4, 2013 |
| One of the best shows that I have ever seen on Broadway. The acting was great and you will run through every emotion from happiness to sorrow with this ensemble. I can not believe it is closing. Hopefully it will get picked up by an investor an d at least find a home at an off-Broadway spot. |

The Best Broadway! Review by: ashley, Dec 31, 2012 |
| Chaplin is amazing. Go see it before it closes! The actors are perfectly cast, and Rob McClure really makes you feel as if Charlie Chaplin is standing on stage in front of you. Charlie Chaplin's story told with such grace and elegance. This is one of my favorite Broadway shows! Don't miss it! |

Fantastic! Review by: Kelly Girls!, Dec 29, 2012 |
| I took my daughters ages 10 and 13 to this show. They were among the youngest in the audience. All of us loved the show! The story, dancing, choreography, staging, acting...everything was amazing. It's sad the show is ending in January. I overheard an usher say it was due to Superstorm Sandy. "The ticket sales dropped and the producer pulled the plug". We saw Newsies, Wicked, Spiderman and Chaplin. We loved this show just as much ... read more as the others! |

The Little Tramp That Left a Large Impression in my Heart Review by: Leslie, Dec 20, 2012 |
| This show is a true GEM on Broadway, and I am so devastated to learn of its closing. I saw this show twice within a 3 week period. It's the type of show that sticks with you long after it's over. Truly captivating, transporting and beautiful...as I've told others, it's a show in a league of its own. The sets, costumes, storyline, and the transformation of "The Tramp" -- all so cleverly staged and magnificently performed. Rob McClure gives a STAR ... read more performance. I was touched beyond words as he performed the finale. Not a dry eye in the house, and I've never seen an audience leap to their feet as fast as they did when he took his bow. One of the BEST shows that I've seen, and I have seen over 30 in total. If there's anything to take away from this review, it's this: GO. SEE. CHAPLIN. |

Chaplin/McClure see both stars....NOW !!!! Review by: , Dec 20, 2012 |
| You must see this show before it closes!!! Rob McClure gives a fantastic performance, sure to get a Tony Award. Because no one knows him when he comes on stage there is none of that superficial applause but at the end of the show there is tremendous real applause for him and his excellent performance. He is surely a Broadway star of the future and producers will find shows just for him. This musical tells Chaplin's life story, and even if you ... read more know about Chaplin you may find something new. McClure has all Chaplin's movements down as to be expected but the emotional quality he brings to the part is what sells the show. The songs in the show are really good, some lyrics very tender and meaningful, sung beautifully by the cast. The setting is very Black and White as was the films of that period. After seeing this show it makes you wonder what Chaplin would have done in those twenty'lost' years if he had remained in the US, instead of us kicking him out. See this show, see Rob McClure, you will not be disappointed. |

Its what musical theater is all about and rarely seems to be any more. You will laugh and you will cry. I would be ... read more very surprised if this show doesnt win a Tony it deserves it. Chaplin--now one of my favorites! Review by: coatlie, Nov 8, 2012 |
| We saw the show the day before the hurricane. I have been to dozens of shows and this is now one of my favorites! Rob McClure gave a wonderful performance and is deserving of a Tony. He is also a fine human being who thanked us for coming and told us to stay safe in the upcoming storm. I think the critics are definitely wrong on this one. Everyone I have spoken to enjoyed the show and are recommending it to others. Go--you won't be ... read more disappointed. |
