Groovy 60s in Broadway Review by: , May 21, 2011 |
| I loved the show and I am thinking about going to see it again. I was sorry when it was over. I guess that you have to be in a special mood, but I thought that it was very entertaining, and the singing and dancing was fantastic. The two leads were a great surprise to me and I felt that they were giving themselves completely in their roles. If you like the groovy 60s that is coming back in so many shows (Mad Men), you can't miss this show |

| Having read reviews both favorable and unfavorable, we (4 adults) went to the theater open minded and willing to take a chance. It far exceeded our expectations. I actually enjoyed it more than the movie. Well staged and always entertaining, the song score was almost always a worthwhile addition. Aaron Tveit both as an actor and singer does a fine job as Frank, Tom Wopat is solid as his Dad. But Norbert Leo Butz as the FBI agent subtly ends up ... read more taking command of the performance in ways that even those of us who have admired his work in the past might not see coming. The female roles aren't as well written and Kerry Butler wasn't quite up to her solo number. But this in no way detracted from our enjoyment of Catch Me If You Can. We cared about the characters and felt thoroughly entertained at the Wednesday matinee. |

Extremely entertaining, fun, great music, acting sensational and beautiful girls!! Review by: LIN, May 16, 2011 |
We saw Catch Me If You Can this past Sat. It was amazing! Didn't stop smiling and moving to the music. They did a remarkable job. All the actors were wonderful and couldn't believe Aaron Tveit was on stage through the entire show. Norbert Leo Butz was absolutely phenomenal. It's a MUST SEE! WHAT FUN!!! |

Boring & Disappointing! Review by: TJJ, May 15, 2011 |
It just doesn't work as a musical! As the star of the show~Aaron Tveit is a fine singer very cute indeed but he can not carry the show and is not a star and lacks the emotional depth needed and is too pretty boy as a con man. Norbert Leo Butz drags it along as the bumbling FBI character man adding some solidly acted and sung moments and stops the show in his superb act 1 finale. Tom Woppat looks terribly disinterested as ... read more he sleep walks thru the show as his Dad but sings it nicely if a bit hoarse. Both Moms portrayed are the best things in the show; The sultry Rachel DeBenedet stunningly graces the stage and sings beautifully. Linda Hart's small but memorable role is sung w/ much brass n sass and she adds much humor to Act 2 the better act. Both have the best looking costumes in a show that looks ugly, shadowy & bland...lacking the pop-fun n sex appeal of the 60's. The large unsexy non youthful dance ensemble brightly smiles but is stuck performing generic styled choreography that looks all the same. The score is ok. |

Talented Actor Review by: Arts Supporter, May 7, 2011 |
| We watched last night's performance and agreed that Norbert Leo Butz carried the show. He embraced his role, became the character, made it believeable down to finest detail as nerdie Carl Hanratty. "Don't Break the Rules" was fantastic and worth the price of admission. Aaron Tveit can sing but doesn't have stage presence. Kerry Bulter's solo was painful to listen to because she over-extended herself and came across screaming and as a result ... read more the piece lost its sentimental, longing, conflicted emotions. As of the fit and beautiful girls, it started becoming gratuitous because they were over-used. The period costumes were fitting. The set changed seamlessly. Go see it because Mr. Butz is performing. Once he leave the show I'm not sure who will be the archor/glue to keep the show going. |

Not as bad as many say Review by: Filmandtheatrebuff, May 6, 2011 |
I don't think this show is as bad as some reviews are making it out to be. Sure, it does have its flaws in structure and some of the music is bland and unoriginal, but there are moments where this production really shines. Norbert Leo Butz steals this show fairly easily. His "Don't Break the Rules" brought down the house in a way I haven't seen in a while. It was an ovation that lasted over a minute. Aaron Tveit has a ... read more strong stage presence and a powerful voice and I feel he did a wonderful job as well. Kerry Butler killed her big song, but otherwise her role was minimal and she didn't really have much else to do. The rest of the cast is solid or very good, esp. Rachel de Benedet. I loved the incorporation of the orchestra to the stage and the design itself and how the lighting made the set a colorful 60s rainbow. The show is entertaining and I feel while it isn't the best show, it certainly is not a dud. |

Sassy, bubbly, and just plain fun. Review by: steeveedee, May 3, 2011 |
| Fun, fun, fun. I think you have to put yourself in the right frame of mind and your tongue firmly in your cheek. It's a musical that's by the number, but that number is fun. It was happy, engaging and the leads are terrific. I smiled through most of it. It felt like a bubbly concoction that was perfect for the subject--a con man in the swingin' '60s. I don't agree with some of the negative comments on here. I think too many ... read more people are overthinking what this is meant to be. I was a blast, with upbeat tunes, gorgeous dance girls, and clever staging. If you loved throwbacks like Mad Men, Catch Me If You Can (the movie), or even Down With Love, you'll enjoy this. I highly recommend it! |

Should be #1 show to see! Review by: Galy, May 1, 2011 |
| I saw this show on Saturday April 30th. I have seen many shows and didn't think this one would be the BEST I have seen, but it was. These actors put their all into each number. I was surprised how well Daniel Radcliffe sang and danced. John Larroquette and Christopher J. Hanke were AMAZING!! as well. It's a must see show! |

A Wonderful Enjoyable Show Review by: Ed H, May 1, 2011 |
| Really enjoyed this show from start to finish. Aaron Tveit gives his all in a definite star making performance. Really enjoyed him when he was in "Next to Normal" and was looking forward to seeing what he could do in a lead performance, needless to say, he did not dissappoint. He should be in the running for a Tony. Norbert Leo Butz, was incredible, especially during his bring the house number "Don't Break the Rules".Kerry Butler was ... read more also quite good, but didn't have a big part.Wish she had another song, besides "Fly away", which showcased what a great singer she is. Loved the fact that the orchestra was on stage, and that John McDaniel, did a remarkable job as musical director.Really enjoyed this show, recommending it to my friends and looking forward to the CD.Can't wait to see it again soon! |

Not a bad show, it’s just not very good. Review by: Tom Bestor, May 1, 2011 |
“Catch Me If You Can” is as much a con as its anti-hero, Frank Abagnale, Jr. is. It has most of the trappings of a musical -- but ultimately it can’t pull them together into anything authentic. Thank god for Norbert Leo Butz – his Carl Hanratty (the role played by Tom Hanks in the movie) – is alone worth the price of admission. Without him, I don’t think I would have stayed engaged long enough to notice that Aaron Tveit still has a ... read more terrific voice and charming stage presence, or that some of the songs were funny enough, or that the show broke the fourth wall in some interesting ways.
I think one reason I felt conned by the show was that the show took too long to get rolling. My suggestion to the producers? Put “Don’t Break the Rules” earlier in the show. It’s a great number. And if you put it right after we meet Frank, it sets up the motivations behind the epic battle of wits between the two, which is the most fascinating part of the story, but often gets lost among the side plots. “Catch Me If You Can” is not a bad show, it’s just not very good. As I said, it’s a con, but an entertaining enough con that a fair number of showgoers will fall for it and never be the wiser. |

This was a great show, I saw it April 11, 2pm matinee. First, the music was great! They really captured that 60's swing sound. The cast was perfect, extra shout outs to Norbert Leo Butz - he is spectacular! I've recommended my friends to go see the show, and if I get back to NYC this fall, I will see it again. You'll leave this show feeling a 1000 times better then whne you went in, I wished it didn't have to end! |
