Cat as life is all Mendacity Review by: Diract 66, Mar 18, 2013 |
| A very impressive production of 'Cat' by a very talented cast, however, it could have been more dynamic and intense. Scarlett Johansson takes command of the entire first act, having most of the lines and speeches. She is very good but does not express at any time in the play the sultry side of Maggie even though she is in a slip for most of the first act. Benjamin Walker plays Brick as a damaged individual, which he is, but ... read more more intensity was needed in his lines with Maggie, and especially the fight with Big Daddy. Ciaran Hinds mumbled some of his dialogue and ,at times, was hard to hear. He also needed more command in the scene with Brick. Debra Monk, as Big Mama, and Emily Bergl as Mae give excellent performances. This play has three acts and is long by today's standards of ninety minute one acts. It is worth sitting through a play that has character development and climax and see what real playwriting is about. Act 1 is all Maggie, Act 2 is Brick and Big Daddy, and Act 3 is Big Mama. The way the play ended Brick and Maggie are on the bed sitting, in each others arms. Who is going to be the aggressor and make the first move is left to you, the audience, and that will tell your interpretation of this show. Excellent set design, sound, and music is used in this play. A revival worth seeing. |

HOT INDEED! Review by: Vocal8, Feb 6, 2013 |
As it is my all-time favorite play, any opportunity to see "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" live is an awaited event. Not only did this production engage me completely, I believed it to be a novel and fresh interpretation throughout: more physical, flamboyant and aural (i.e. prominent use of sound effects and song)than any staging of "Cat" I have seen before. Despite several exceptions, Scarlett Johansson essays Mr. Williams' exquisite use ... read more of language with unerring conviction. There is much humanity to characters Brick, Big Daddy and Big Mama and overlapping dialogue plus scenes overpopulated with performers are used to potent advantage. I look forward as always to the next revival of this literary masterwork.

The Cat fizzled Review by: Kitty Witty, Dec 24, 2012 |
| I saw the show and was very disappointed in the casting. The actors lacked passion. The scenery, lighting & staging were well done. The the southern dialect is barel there. The only person casted perfectly was Emily Bergl as Mae. Even Debra Monk & Scarlett were unable to help this long, boring show.Wait for discounts. |

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Review Review by: BroadwayReviewer, Dec 22, 2012 |
I highly enjoyed this production. The cast was phenomonal - Scarlett Johansson gave the best performance in my opinion. She was angry, comedic, and made Maggie completely understandable and sympathetic. Benjamin Walker and the rest of the cast were wonderful as well. The actors are more comfortable now compared to the first preview, and all of their southern accents were perfected. The set and lighting were stunning. The only complaint ... read more that I have about this show is that Acts I and II need to be condensed just a little bit. I'm not sure if that can actually be changed though. The story was very interesting itself; it is a critically acclaimed play obviously. This show gets my recommendation. However, if you are completely intolerant of straight plays (some people are), than you probably wouldn't enjoy this performance. In my opinion, you would probably need to be at least 14 to see this show, as it deals with adult themes and the language and comedy are obviously aimed towards adults. |

saw first preview...needs more rehersal time...would see it again after opening night Review by: , Dec 20, 2012 |
| Saw the first preview performance. Not overly impressed; it needs much more rehersal time. It's slow paced and not as dynamic as it seems it should be. There were two intermissions and the production, at about 3 hours, did drag. Deborah Monk (big mamma) and Benjamin Walker (Brick) give the best performances. Big Daddy is hard to understand. Scarlett Johannsen (sp?)is good but her southern accent is weak (it goes in and out)and she seems to ... read more lack the inherint sexuality that is required of the part. Maybe by opening night it will improve somewhat but not sure. I have seen much better productions of this Tennessee William's masterpiece. |
