shame on you anika and terrence Review by: anonymous, Jun 12, 2008 |
I just attended the June 6th production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Two days before I flew to NYC, I got an email stating that Terrence Howard would not be performing form June 5- June 10th. Had I known that in advance, I would not have purchased airline tickets, hotel, and show tickets. True I wanted to see the show, but Terrence Howard was "the box office draw!" not only for myself but many others. The general consensus of the people in line ... read more was one of disappointment at his absence. The understudy for Terrence actually did an excellent job, but all I could think of was the fact that I was four rows away from what was supposed to be Terrence Howard. It is my belief that if you're going to star on Broadway, you need to be there FOR YOUR WHOLE CONTRACT. The audience and the fans should be able to rely on you being there for your stated dates when they purchase tickets. So that was the first disappointment. Disappointment #2 was terrible and made me loose all respect for Anika Noni Rose!!! During the first act, a woman in the audience took ill and collapsed. Several people in the audience stood up and said, "She's not breathing!" People were calling 911 on their cell phones, and people were shouting, "is there a doctor in the house". The lady was dragged to the aisle where it seemed she may have had a seizure of some sort. All of a sudden in the angriest voice imaginable and with the matching facial expression, Anika Noni Rose angrily glares into the area of the comotion and actually stops the show and says, "Would y'all please be quiet and take your seats! We are in the middle of a show here! If you're not satisfied with the show, please go to the desk and request a refund, if not please be quiet. I'm trying to do my job!" The audience shouted out "there is a medical emergency", and her snappy reply was, "then why aren't the house lights on. I'm trying to perform here!" The audience began to boo her extremely loudly. Then she actually stomped off the stage into the audience in the direction of the comotion. When she saw the collapsed lady in the aisle being tended to, she angrily spun on her heels and marched back on the stage and then off the stage. She never once said, I'm sorry we can't hear up here and we didn't know it was a medical emergency" She just seemed totally annoyed and turned off that her performance had dared to be interrupted by a medical emergency! The nerve! It was so ugly the way she acted, and as I said, the audience boo-ed her loudly. When she stormed off the stage, all you could hear were people saying, "Oh my God!" and "Who does she think she is?" and "What an awful attitude!" Everyone seemed to have a problem with the scene they had just witnessed. The sad part was that she was in the midst of an absolutely superb performance. I didn't really know much about her except that she was in Dream Girls, and I was beginning to really respect her acting skills at the very moment when the comotion interrupted it. Sadly enough, I lost all respect for her after that. When the paramedics had taken the lady away and the show resumed, when she came back out...you could just feel it in the air that the audience was no longer enamoured with her. I heard Elizabeth Taylor played her part in the past. Could you imaging Liz Taylor stopping a Broadway show to admonish a segment of the audience, and then jumping up running off the stage to see for herself that there was a valid reason for her performance to be interrupted? Of course not! To add insult to injury, when the show ended...when everyone was giving standing ovations, she holds her hands up to stop the audience from cheering. She says, "just so everyone knows, the lady who had the emergency is being tended to at the hospital and is expected to recover. Oh, and to answer the question who do I think i am...I'm an actor trying to make sure you get the best performance ever!" You should |

An unforgettable Birthday Present Review by: Auds, Jun 1, 2008 |
| My family saw this show on Sunday, June 1st(which was my birthday) and I couldn't have asked for a better present. The entire cast was amazing!! I suggest if you have a chance to be in the fist few rows, do it as you really get to experience the joys and sorrows that the characters are trying to express. Nothing beats being up close and seeing the tears in the eyes of James Earl Jones, Terrance Howard, Anika Noni Rose and Phylicia Rashad. ... read more Each of them(whth the exception of Jones) also spent time signing playbills and taking photos after their 3 hour show. Now that's true stardom for you!! |

Not worth the money... Review by: nisha, May 30, 2008 |
| The first Act was Anika and she talked at a high pitch voice that was hard to understand. Terrance Howard was not what I expected. The whole play was shown out of one scence, the bedroom. If you've seen a broadway play then this play will dissappoint you. And the show was a little slow getting to the point. There were some funny moments with great lines that made me laugh, but there were only a few of those. |

Not to be missed Review by: barb829, May 26, 2008 |
| We saw this show Sun 5/25 and it was spectacular. Anika Noni Rose stole the show and James Earl Jones was as suburb as you would expect. That being said, we bought tickets primarily to see Terrance Howard(one of my favorite actors)and he was not at that performance. According to an usher he frequently misses performances. It's sad to see actors disappointing their fans. Regardless this was spectacular show. |

THE ROOF IS HOT Review by: Big Ken, May 4, 2008 |
| The show was wonderful, and Anika stole it! A perfect mix of heavy depression with light levity. It felt good when you had the chance to laugh. Everyone did a wonderful job and the show was a success. |

ONE WORD........ANIKA!!! Review by: Jimmyboy, May 2, 2008 |
| Anika rules this show! I saw this with Boris Kodjoe and although physically fitting the role never really fills Brick's shoes. Phylicia Rashad is also very strong in the role of Big Mama. James Earl Jones was somewhat of a dissapointment, surprisingly. This show belongs to MAGGIE and Anika does her great justice! One of the best performances I have seen since Christine Ebersole in Grey Gardens. |

Cat threw up a hair ball Review by: , Apr 13, 2008 |
| Anika was amazing! P. Rashad was wonderful. However, T. Howard performance was not as strong as one would hope for on stage; at times one could not hear him speak. J.Jones was out of town and his understudy tried very hard but came off as aloof and vulgar. |

Anika and Phylicia rise again! Review by: smholst, Apr 13, 2008 |
| Given the cast and the play, I expected a high quality show. However, Anika None Rose's performance surpassed all of my expectations. Anika inhabited her role and commanded my attention with her presence on stage. She was passionate, strong willed, purposeful, sexy, and the perfect Maggie. An overall strong cast and performances, especially Phylicia Rashad who, in my opinion, has been the best dramatic actress on Broadway for quite some time.... read more. I never miss any of her shows and she deserves each accolade she receives. I enjoyed this play so much, I have purchased tickets to see it again in May. I am taking my son as one of his graduation presents from Yale and am confident he will enjoy the show as much as I did. SMH |

Stellar Performances Review by: theatergoer, Apr 13, 2008 |
We go to the theater frequently, seeing almost everything on Broadway and off-Broadway This show was brillant. Perfectly cast. Especially, Anika Noni who personified Maggie The Cat!! If you are still able to get tickets. Grab them.

See it Review by: Carol, Mar 24, 2008 |
| Anika Noni Rose as Maggie the cat and James Earl Jones as Big Daddy carry this play with an all-star cast. The play is about family. The script is the saltier version that Williams wrote in the 1970's because Elia Kazan would not produce the play in 1955 with the obscenities. Times have changed, and hearing Jones curse with his stentorian voice is somewhat disjarring. Nevertheless, the play transcends race, time, and setting. |

Very good! Review by: Terry, Mar 5, 2008 |
I thought this play was well acted, with a great cast and sets. I had a bit of a hard time hearing the dialogue at the beginning of the first act, but it got better after that. All in all, a worthwhile theatre experience. |

Great show, great performances, worth every penny! Review by: 1streview, Feb 13, 2008 |
Loved the show, Anika was extraordinary, Terrence's role was perfect, James Earl Jones was marvelous. The set was great, the dialogue was very well written, as you can tell we thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this play. I will see it again and again and again. We saw it Wednesday night, expected ok performances but were blown away from start to finish. Did I mention Big Mama, oh what a joy. My life has been enriched by this experience. We have ... read more seen many shows for many years and this is the first time I felt compelled to write a review. the first hour goes by so fast you wonder if something is wrong with your watch. Have a good dinner, enjoy the show. |
