Do NOT go even if you have free tickets...... Review by: Wendie, Jun 28, 2006 |
Wendie Malick was sick and they did not annouce it. The box office was closed and the response is tough luck. The show will close it's a matter of minutes. I feel sorry for the cast they try very hard, it's the script, the unnecessary band on stage, bad direction. If you are going to see a particular cast member call ahead and hope they tell you the truth.
They should put everyone out of their misery and ... read more close immediately, what an embrassment. |

Awful, Awful Show...See "Not a Genuine Black Man" Instead Review by: Nick Name, Jun 19, 2006 |
My family and I saw two shows yesterday for Father's Day and my mother's birthday. The first play we saw, "Not a Geniune Black Man" was a brilliantly written and performed one-man show about the only black family in all-white Californian suburb. The show used the F-word liberally, but not gratutiously.
On the other hand, gratutious isn't a strong enough word for the language and content of "Burleigh Grimes." My daughter and I walked out ... read more at intermission due less to the risque content and more to the poor story. Cliched, predictable, lame; these are some of the nice adjectives I could use. My wife and mother stayed for the second act. My wife because she is huge Yazbek fan (his rock albums are a great as is the soundtrack for "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"); my mother only stayed to keep my wife company. Both said the second act was more awful than the first.
Speaking of David Yazbek, the only music he seems to have provided is one riff that is played over and over and over and over throughout the play. The piece is from one of his rock albums that he wrote years ago. Truth be told, Yazbek was the main reason we went to the show. Needless to say, the music was a big disappointment.
The other draw for us was the actors. I've liked Wendie Malick since "Dream On" and Mark Moses is great on "Desperate Houswives." They had great stage presence here but the material let them down at every turn.
For those of you that think that we might have enjoyed the show if we hadn't paid so much, I'll let you in on secret: The Tickets Were Free!!!
Take my advice and go see Brian Copeland's remarkable "Not A Genuine Black Man," a bargain at any price.

Fun-filled night! Review by: honest reviewer, Jun 13, 2006 |
Mark Moses,Wendie Malick were intense and delightful, Ashley Williams hillarious,James Badge Dale adorable, and Jason Antoon and John Lavelle regular wall street dudes. We loved the set, enjoyed the music and laughed throughout the show. This play was different, exciting, kept moving in the first act. The second act was slower and did end abruptly. We actually wanted more. Music a bit loud for the second act. The theater was great but too ... read more cold! There were six of us, four adults and two teens. We recommend that you go and see the show. Not for everyone,if you can't get used to the F word. The women behind us, sixty something complained, but we heard them laughing throughout the show. Go figure!

It's dirt and grimes... washed away my money! Review by: theater lover, Jun 13, 2006 |
This is a dreadful book. I suspect they got great talent to make up for the dreadful play. Someone had to have put lots of money behind this. I thought because there were 'names' in it -that it would be good. But I was very dissapointed. I forced myself to sit through it all. I'm sorry I did. If this actually has a run - after a great fun clever show like The Great American Trailer Park Musical closed prematurely,(also at Dodgers) ... read more then I truly will be baffled by what a 'hit show' really is. |

Review by: TheaterFan, Jun 13, 2006 |
| Vanity production, thy name is Burleigh Grimes. Wow, was this ever terrible, like sitting thought a workshop production of a mere concept for a play---my heart goes out to the cast: so many talented people were lured together only to be stuck with a mess. Many walk-outs during the show I was at. The two standouts ("wife/coffe girl/dancer" and "Buck") managed to elevate above the material, but all good moments from any of the actors seemed to ... read more come from their portrayals and not from the script. Not a cheap production, either, so a waste of my time and a lot of someone's money. Music was competent, but WHY (dear lord, please tell me!), WHY: a) have any at all, and b) have the musicians on-stage? The punny dialogue was so painfully forced at times--"Don't dis Grace." is one of the more clever examples--that I think I broke a nail on a seatrest while clenching. And as for the plot? Let's just say it features a deus ex machina that actually was a machine. I was aghast. I suppose you could enjoy it if you think of it as the Showgirls of Wall Street. |

Talented actors Review by: Mary, Jun 11, 2006 |
I wanted to see Badge Dale on stage so dragged a friend along to join me. We both really enjoyed the play. Fast paced and confusing at times, it echoes the inner workings of stock trading.
I agree with some of the other reviewers, that perhaps the ending is too rushed, I actually sat there hoping there might be more.
And the acting? All excellent, from Badge, Mark, Wendie and the others. If the play stays around for a few months ... read more I'd love to see it again; to find if any changes had been made, but also to pick up on any little details I missed the first time.
Congratulations to the entire cast.

Pretty good - if you pay attention Review by: Jo, Jun 10, 2006 |
I saw this show on June 9th. although the story was somewhat lacking the show itself was actually quite entertaining. Its fast paced and many of the joke were lost on the crowd - but they were funny.
My only real issue was that the story picks up to a rushed pace at the end and ends quickly.
I think its a bit more complex than your average play. We found ourselves discussing all the little things on the way home. Like how the ... read more charachters interact while they are at work. It portrays the inner workings of the Wall St. office space pretty well.
I liked it, but I could see how many would not. |

Good talent, poor show. Review by: Love Off-Broadway, Jun 10, 2006 |
| A waste of good talent. Mark Moses was excellent. Wendie Malick was Wendie Malick, still beautiful at 56 but she can't get the grin off her face or her model pose to change. I saw an early preview and if they don't redo to show before opening, I'm afraid it will close quickly. I was expecting something like GlenGarry GlenRoss, but got real hokey nonsense. All the actor were good, but will someone find a real show for them. |

SEE THE SEAMY SIDE OF WALL STREET! Review by: kszj, Jun 5, 2006 |
THE PACE, THE INTENSITY, THE ACTING, THE MUSIC: ALL WERE EXCELLENT. IS THIS TRULY A COMEDY? I DON'T THINK SO - IT IS DEFINITELY QUITE DARK. THE HUMOR IS SITUATIONAL, NO NEIL SIMON JOKES. I THINK PEOPLE KNOWLEGDEABLE ABOUT WALL STREET WILL ENJOY IT. I SAW AN EARLY PREVIEW AND MUST ADMIT TO SOME CONFUSION ABOUT THE STORYLINE BUT I'M BETTING THE KINKS HAVE BEEN WORKED OUT BY NOW. I PLAN TO SEE THE SHOW AGAIN.. |

Not that great, not that bad. Review by: jasny, May 24, 2006 |
Well a big hit it won't be. The party of 5 to the left of me walked out. My friend said it was hard to enjoy with the people on his side commenting how bad it was throughout the show. He also said with his 2 degrees in theater he should be writing theater as he knows he can do better. That being said, I kind of liked it, lol. I mean it wasn't Miss Saigon or Le Miss, but it was somewhat entertaining. Also, don't expect David Yasbeks work to ... read more be like The Full Monty, it won't be. I mean the tickets were $33 dollars, another person said they paid $22, so for that price it was fun entertainment. Oh and one other thing. All the action on stage prior to the show was ridiculous. Hey the writers, producers, and actors, as well as the support staff made it to Off Broadway. Isn't that an accomplishment?

Jay |
