A must-do New York night out Review by: VictoriaPilner, Mar 30, 2013 |
| A good choice for a night out in New York City. We picked up some tickets at TKTS and were glad we chose this as it was nice to see something based in New York. Refreshingly it is not cheesy like the film and we got wrapped up in the story. This version of Holly is clearly trying very hard to be a grown up girl in New York, hiding her Southern roots and difficult past. Fred tells us the story and it makes you so want it all to work out for ... read more them in the end. This is much darker than the film and much more engaging for it. Glad I didn't see some of the less positive critic reviews before we chose it, not sure what they didn't like - perhaps that the lead actress is from the TV rather than a 'theater actress'? Who knows?! Anyway, definitely a good New York night out! Thumbs up! |

Faithful to the original story, but there are problems. Review by: DoctorJoeE, Mar 27, 2013 |
As others have pointed out, this production is nothing like the movie, and thank goodness for that! It's much more faithful to Capote's original story, set during World War II as Capote set it, not the 1960s of the film; and it's much grittier, and includes Capote's allusions to homosexuality, drug use, and prostitution that were totally ignored in the movie. The ending is much more realistic (and honest) as well. But there are plenty ... read more of problems here too. Emilia Clarke over-acts her character from beginning to end, and seems to be playing a Tennessee Williams southern belle instead of the street-wise New Yorker that she's supposed to be. Cory Michael Smith also tries hard, but his double role as narrator and leading man seems to intimidate him - as does the nude bathtub scene with Clarke, which to my mind is completely unnecessary besides. Pedro Carmo is supposed to be a Brazilian diplomat, but his accent, inexplicably, is that of Steve Martin's "Czechoslovakian Playboy" from Saturday Night Live. George Wendt is wasted (and miscast) in a minor bartender role. The cast is unnecessarily large, the direction needlessly complex, and the cat - played by an understudy (honest to God) on the night we attended - took one look at the audience and bolted stage left during the first act. All of that said, I still recommend the show - mostly, again, because it's so much more true to Capote's original concept than the vapid film. It may not be great drama, but it's pretty darned good. |

A classic New York tale Review by: SarahW, Mar 22, 2013 |
| We went as a group for a girls night out and found the play really interesting. Most of us had only seen the film, not read the book but none of us were disappointed. We had heard that it was based on the book and that it would be different but I don't think it is so far removed. The sets have this striking photographic quality, and reflect the sadness of some of the moments. But that is how New York can be at times - sad and stark. We ... read more were absorbed by the paradoxes of the characters - is Holly a phony, what is Fred's sexuality, do they love each other or are they looking for escape, or comfort or simply just using each other?? The scattered fragments of her past throughout the play that you thread together yourself build a picture that she is a much hurt and resourceful character who has had to dig deep to make her way in the world but that all that bubbling hurt is right under the surface, never far away which makes her run and run to the next thing that might take her away from it. Her sometimes one hundred mile an hour chatty style, seems to portray this- literally banishing the quiet so she might drown out the past or her thoughts. The fact that you are drawing out the characters in your head and questioning and re-questioning their position and motivations is enjoyable. SO much entertainment exists now where you are constantly told what to think and what conclusion to draw it is lovely to watch something that lets you think for yourself. It gave us plenty to chat over in the intermission over a glass of champagne. This is a New York story told in a classic style and something every New Yorker should see. |

Glorious! Review by: JenniferBrightman, Mar 22, 2013 |
| GLORIOUS! I felt like I was swept back in time to a place of elegance, yet with that underlying grubby reality where a woman had no choice or power in the 40's. Emilia captures that essence of Capote's character for Holly that is like a childish girl desperately trying to look in control, grown-up and a million miles from her past. She is chasing, chasing, searching, searching and that feeling is still so relative to us all today -especially ... read more in NYC. We all came here looking for something! Go and see this if you want a sophisticated, thought provoking evening of theater. Skip it if you are just into big and brash musicals or you are so totally hung up on Audrey Hepburn that you don't want to see the story itself from the book. |

GO IF YOU LIKED THE NOVELLA, STAY HOME IF YOU LIKED THE MOVIE. Review by: ATrueTiffany'sFan, Mar 17, 2013 |
I've had enough of these reviews. Take note this review is coming from someone who sees numerous shows on broadway a month, and has gotten to see some of broadway's greatest stars perform live. First of all, Emilia Clarke IS IN NO WAY imitating Audrey Hepburn. She is not imitating her voice! Yes, Emilia is using a character voice, but a big part of that is her REGULAR SPEAKING VOICE. And she is not copying Audrey in her mannerisms, ... read more either. Second of all, in case you missed this: THIS PLAY IS BASED ON THE NOVELLA BY TRUMAN CAPOTE. Get it out of your head that you're going to see the clean cut, Audrey Hepburn movie. Read the book. It's honestly not difficult. If you didn't like the book, don't waste your money on a ticket. Stay home and watch the movie for the millionth time. News flash: Breakfast at Tiffany's (the novella) IS NOT FOR CHILDREN!!! Truman Capote described Holly as being an "American Geisha." Don't bring your kids! This play isn't appropriate in general for children, and I'm sure you don't want them to see the nude scene. Take your kids to see a Disney show or Annie instead. Emilia doesn't play Moon River because, oh, that's right, IT'S NOT THE MOVIE!!!! If you really need big, flashy sets to keep you focused on the stage.... that's sad. Grow up. Go see Newsies if you require a huge set. Emilia, Cory, and George are all wonderful actors. That's all that matters. |

Review by: quartertonine, Mar 17, 2013 |
| A 1940's novel turned into a popular 1960's movie is produced on Broadway in the original 1940's setting. One enters the theatre with big band music playing. This should appeal to the over90 WW2 generation. Welcome to the year 2013 where the 1960's are back. Forget all the nonsense of everyone comparing it to the movie. Take your quellazaire, little black dress, and a 1960's cocktail elsewhere. |

Sleeper, literally fell asleep Review by: Mr Honest, Mar 14, 2013 |
| Attended Matinee on 3/13/13. The show was very slow. With no music and when Emilia Clarke played the guitar on the fire escape she sang what appeared to be a Country song not Moon River. Emilia tried too hard to imitate Audrey Hepburn. My party had a hard time understanding her throughout the show. Cory Michael Smith I think did a good job considering the show. What my party did not like most was the nude scene. It really was unnecessary. It ... read more added nothing to the show especially when Cory turned towards the audience to display his bait and tackle if you will. Fifty years after Hitchcock's Psycho and the writers were not able to pull off this scene without full frontal nudity. That is just poor writing. With the very limited scenic design the writers bank you will use your imagination throughout the show. They could have pulled this scene off without the nudity. I am not a prude, I am just appropriate. There are shows on and off Broadway that have much nudity and for those shows it is expected. This is not one of those shows. The sooner this show closes the better. They are taking up space in a beautiful theatre. |

Review by: Chris, Mar 11, 2013 |
I saw the matinee of this show on March 10, 2013. This version of Breakfast at Tiffany's is nothing like the movie -- so you have to get that out of your head before going into the theater. This show is more true to Truman Capote's story, and that's the problem. The movie and its star, Audrey Hepburn, are iconic, and nothing in this production comes close to the movie. The actress who played Holly Golightly in this show appears ... read more to be trying to imitate Audrey Hepburn (or, at least, I think she's trying to imitate her). The actor who plays Fred (not the brother, but the next-door-neighbor) is the narrator for this production. He speaks with a southern accent (or he tries to speak with a southern accent). I don't understand why he has an accent at all since there is no indication for the need in the play. The biggest disappointment for me was simple -- in the famous scene from the movie where Holly is sitting on the fire escape with her guitar, she sings Moon River (the song that is more well known than the show itself). In this version, the same scene comes up, but there is no Moon River. Instead, the actress sings a completely forgetable song. Maybe it was a matter of not getting the rights to the song for this play, but I thought that it was a major "miss" for the show. There is also a fully nude scene on the stage in the second act for no apparent reason. The nudity was not required to push the show forward -- it seemed sort of gratuitous (maybe because the show was dragging a little bit at that point). I wish the show was better. Would I recommend it? . . . I guess if there was no other show available, and you have a good discount on the tickets, it's worth seeing. But don't go out of your way to see it. |

Good weekend treat Review by: RachelVerne, Mar 11, 2013 |
| Really GOOD, saw the show on Saturday it was a surprise treat from my husband. I read the book at college and it was lovely to see it on the stage. The girl playing Holly has a haunting voice and the song she performed really showed it off. The casting had been done well, the characters are supposed to be young and foolish and the two playing the leads captured that without being silly. We sat in the mezzanine on the right hand ... read more side which was a good view. |

Quick Snack at Tiffany's Review by: Mr. C, Mar 10, 2013 |
My wife and I saw the Saturday mattinee. I thought it was alright but I liked the movie; my wife did not enjoy the production. It seems the main actress tried too hard to be Audrey Hepburn with her voice and mannerism; no one can play the role as Audrey Hepburn did in the movie. Scenery wasn't great but the costumes were good. There was no need for the nudity scene when parents may bring youngsters to this show. |

A proper play Review by: PMurray, Mar 6, 2013 |
| Don't go thinking this will be a carbon copy of the movie. Clarke is conniving and sexy as Holly go Lightly but needs more confidence to match Smith's quality. His narration and breaking the 4th wall may not suit everyone's preferences but for me it worked. Nice quirk to have 'Norm' from Cheers as the barman, and he plays it well. The story meanders a little but so does the novella. This is good if you are happy to sit down and engage, ... read more it isn't for lazy viewing, it is a proper play. |

Witty and pretty Review by: vrdavis, Mar 6, 2013 |
| Saw this first night previews and enjoyed it even though I had not read the book only seen the film and the play is based on the book. Was nice to see a play amidst so many musicals. I thought Holly was a darker character in this than hepburn in the film but I liked that as she can be a bit sickly in the film. It was funny, especially the guy playing Fred who you were rooting for as ... read more he was witty and endearing and the crazy neighbour was kooky and funny too. Thought the way the scenery was done was really cool. Only criticism was that bits were a bit lengthy but I guess it gets sharper as time goes on. It made a good girls night out for me and my girlfriends :) |
