Absolutely Brilliant Review by: aidel, Mar 27, 2011 |
| This is an absolutely brilliant show. Robin Williams is at his all-time best. The script is a masterpiece and deserves the highest critical acclaim. Unfortunately, many of the (unsophisticated) audience members didn't seem to understand the play (or war or PTSD or complicated human suffering) and that is why so many bad (stupid) reviews are showing up on this page. Acting and direction are superb. Not a single weak moment in the entire show.... read more. Admittedly, this is not the Disney version of war and accordingly, I don't recommend it for the general Times Square tourist. This is a show for thoughtful, intelligent people about the senseless destruction of war. |

A Very Good Piece of Theater - Not for wimps or people who don't want to think or feel. Review by: nivelm, Mar 25, 2011 |
| I thought the acting was superb. It is a grisly thought provoking piece of theater. I would love a chat with the writer so that I could ask questions. It was very powerful and yes, disturbing. I spent one hitch in the military, and I went through basic training. I was not surprised by any of the language nor the type of personality/lack of education/poor socio-economic background that the soldiers portrayed in the film. War is ugly and ... read more it is shameful that we have so many young people/American soldiers over in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places now who have no idea or understanding of what is going on. (Not that any of us do for that matter!) Nothing makes sense "God"....Bengal Tiger will make you uncomfortable ......there is a lot of value to this piece of drama. |

BAD .... REALLY BAD !! Review by: mollieringworm, Mar 22, 2011 |
| I just saw it last Saturday 3/19 and I never read the reviews, prefering to have an unbiased opinion. I can say, without a doubt, this is a the worst play I have ever seen. I almost fell asleep during the first act because the acting was so junior high quality. My husband and I left during intermission ... it was too painful to watch. I am greatly disappointed. This won't make it for the "limited time" it advertises because I don't think ... read more there is anything you could do with it. |

Serious Stuff Review by: DoctorJoeE, Mar 21, 2011 |
As the 3 previous, cryptic reviews have implied, this play is probably not what you're expecting. It is not a comedy, nor Robin Williams being his wild, crazy self (although he does have some funny lines). It is not for children. (The lady sitting next to us left with her 10-year-old daughter after the first shooting and 10th F-bomb.) It is not a patriotic story about Our Boys in Iraq (quite the opposite, actually). It is not for ... read more tourists or Williams groupies looking for a bit of light entertainment. So enough about what it's not -- what it is, is heavy stuff. It's a political statement, and a commentary on life, death, and survival, and material desires versus the Big Picture. It is intense, and thought-provoking. And to its credit, it doesn't spoon-feed much of anything; you have to draw your own conclusions. It does have its share of issues, which mostly center around Williams -- he gets top billing, of course, but his role is supportive, and relatively minor. If you're a regular theatre-goer you've seen this a million times: The producers decide they need a "name" to sell tickets, and the "name" decides he needs a Broadway credit on his resume. The problem with putting a big name in a small role is obvious: Williams is a fine actor, but by his very presence he distracts you from the substance of the play, which is hard enough to fathom without distractions. Suspension of disbelief is also hard -- a dead tiger who walks and talks like a human and wears nothing resembling a tiger suit is a challenge. Keeping track of who's dead and who's still alive is also challenging at times. And the dialog can get a bit dense. In short, it's good theatre, badly promoted; Robin Williams fans will assume it is a vehicle for his schtick and leave angry, while the target audience (serious theatre-goers) will make the same assumption and not go at all. Which adds up to a short run, in all likelihood. So if you're in the mood for a real drama, well-acted, do see it -- but do it soon. |
