Interesting look at Unhappy couple Review by: brooklyn lady, Mar 24, 2013 |
Interesting Look at a Couple in Big Trouble It was difficult to understand this play. Very well done by all the actors. On some level it is a comparison between the couples. One very dysfunctional and the other couple working together as a unit toward common goals. Made me think of Tolstoy's happy family and the not happy family. I did give it thought after seeing it. Unhappy couple is dealing with a partner who suffers from emotional ... read more and mental problems. The other half of the unhappy couple is afraid to be honest because of fear of losing the beloved spouse. It is a tragedy. I thought one partner loves too much and the other was too involved with love of self. The play will lead the viewers to discussion about it perhaps with never coming to agreement about what was the cause of all the unhappiness. |

Review by: quartertonine, Mar 17, 2013 |
Saw this play in New Haven and had NO intentions of subjecting myself and my partner to this nonsense again in NYC. The director asked my opinion (via e-mail, my response. 1) This play could have been called "Paducah". There's nothing WRITTEN or charming about these couples living in an up and coming neighborhood of Paris. I'd rather traverse the hills of the real Belleville than subject myself to ... read more this 'shocker' again. 2) The shocker would have been more interesting if the husband was doin' something more exciting with the landlord, either one! 3) And as predicted, this play did indeed go to NYC. OFF OFF OFF OFF OFF Broadway next to Paducah where it belongs. |

Not What I Hoped For! Review by: Ron T, Mar 3, 2013 |
I was interested in seeing this show because of the credentials of both the playwright and the director. Everything about the production is first-rate -- acting, direction, and design. However, the story and pacing are real disappointment. I don't want to give away anything about the story, but I'm sure the majority of the audience felt the same way as my wife and myself. I expected much more from the New York Theater Workshop. |
