Loved All the Oldies Review by: , Apr 12, 2011 |
| Go see this show if you like the songs of the 60's. The singers are all good and bring the old songs back to life with lots of fun. The Florence Greenberg story is secondary to the music, making the show more of a musical review than a traditional show. |

Not a Broadway musical--a Broadway revue! Review by: musical fanatic, Apr 8, 2011 |
| Poorly written. More like a revue you would see at a theme park. Enjoyed the music and the talented cast, but the script was extremely weak. Afraid it won't last long on Broadway. |

Good Music, Mediocre Play Review by: Carol , Apr 5, 2011 |
If you want a pleasant trip down memory lane to the late 1950s into 1966, Baby, It's You fits the bill musically. The cast is talented, especially the four women playing the Shirelles: Kyra Da Costa, Crystal Starr Knighton, Chritina Sajous, and Erica Ash. Jahi Kearse, the understudy for Jocko and a dead ringer for James Brown's style, had the audience up on its feet cheering and dancing. The plot of the story is thin and undeveloped with ... read more Florence Greenberg's children largely ignored while she pursued her dream of producing an award-winning girls' group of the rock and roll era. The history is tangential, again leaving a hole in the story. Even the theme of black-white relationships at the cusp of the Civil Rights Era lies dormant in the play as Florence Greenberg (Beth Leavel) is a far better mother to her four black "daughters" than she is to Mary Jane (Kelli Barrett). Only Greenberg's relationship with her black producer Luther Dixon, played expertly by Allan Louis, and its ramifications is explored in terms of the setting.

Great new refreshing musical - Go see it !!!! Review by: frequent theatregoer, Apr 4, 2011 |
This is a very enjoyable show and as a frequent theatre goer, I would think this will be around for a long time. Not quite as great as “Memphis” but so much better than “Million Dollar Quartet.” The performers are great (with one exception), the costumes and scenery dazzling, the true story is heartwarming, and of course, if you like 60’s music, you’ll love the show. It is the story of Florence Greenberg, a NJ housewife who found and ... read more produced “The Shirelle’s.” Beth Leavel, who plays Florence deserves a Tony Award – she is outstanding. Allan Louis, her co-star, Barry Pearl, and all of the “Shirelles” are fabulous too. Interestingly, some of the other performers play multiple roles (to save money paying performers, perhaps ?) . This past Sat. matinee performance which was the 1st week of previews, it was disappointing to have the understudy Jahi Kearse play the roles of 5 characters. He was just way too weak of a singer and it was obvious he was the understudy as he was overshadowed by the other great performers who can sing and act so much better. In other shows, sometimes the understudy is just as good as the ‘real’ one, but not the case here. We enjoyed all the songs performed and the show was a perfect venue for telling the story of this remarkable woman. Overall, it is a great refreshing show and deserves to be on Broadway a long time. The audience agreed as there was an immediate standing ovation.

Will you still love this show tomorrow? You bet you will. Review by: LD, Apr 3, 2011 |
Can a middle-aged housewife from New Jersey actually become a successful music producer in the 60's? You bet she can, and Florence Greenberg did just that. This is her story. Its not a concert and there is a lot of ground to cover so some elements of the story will be brief (as for example segregation in the South). And the music.... so many wonderful hits by the Shrielles, you will be dancing in the aisle by curtain! Yes,... read more, its another "jukebox" musical, and the first ten minutes will almost let you think there is no plot at all, but the story soon surfaces and the super cast should knock you over. If its missing anything its the depth of story that really makes you believe the characters, but, again, there is a lot of ground to cover in just over two hours. Florence Greenberg was a remarkable woman, and this is a remarkable tribute to her and the music she was able to contribute to the history of rock and roll. Wait till you find out the little song that she herself wrote.

Baby Its You review - great group talent singing, but poorly written and produced Review by: Dutchman, Mar 29, 2011 |
| This show recreated The Shirelles with the incredible singing talent of these young ladies. However, the play becomes disjointed and turns into an warped oldies concert at times. Mrs. Greenberg may have been responsible for songs like "Louie, Louie," but playing it here destroys the continuity and appeals only to octogenarians. "Mr. Space Man" and "Twist and Shout" should be thrown out as well. Even an imitation Leslie Gore singing "It's ... read more My Party" didn't work with terrible acting of crying at the end. Could perhaps keep Dionne Warwick's imitation with her great voice, but the greatest disappointment of all was the producer omitting The Shirelles' megahit "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow." Absolutely unforgivable. It was the sole reason I bought tickets, to hear that beautiful melody live. It would have been the perfect song to end with, along with a cameo appearance of the real Mrs. Greenberg if she is still alive. The groups best song was "Soldier Boy," but, again, leaving out their best hit is just absurd. I can't imagine what this producer was thinking. Yes, Mrs. Greenberg may have been behind the success of The Shirelles, but the audience wants to see, and hear, the group. How did they get started in Passaic, NJ, before Mrs. Greenberg came along? Having them sing other songs like "He's So Fine," as though singing The Chiffons tune behind their manager's back, or even better "A Lover's Concerto" by The Toys, would be sensational!! The story of Mrs. Greenberg should be the vehicle to showcase this great group, not vice versa. Such wasted talent!!! The group is absolutely phenomenal! Great idea, but very poorly produced. |
