Smart and honest Review by: Vera Cobb, Jun 20, 2009 |
Completely sensational. Sure, the songs are shocking (Everyone's A Little Bit Racist), but ultimately, I found them very honest. It was an exploration of the taboo side of human nature, done in a very fresh, clever way. And if the opening number (What Do You Do, With A BA in English?) isn't the most hilariously accurate song ever written, I don't know what is. As for those people who are crying 'outrage,' if you've ever laughed at an episode ... read more of The Simpsons, this shouldn't distress you. |

Completely funny. I walked out in stitches. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. You have to wonder what sick mind came up with the brilliant comedy.

Bad Choice Review by: Liz, Apr 19, 2009 |
Before you go watch several episodes of "Sesame Street". If you can stand that kind of music and singing for two hours then you will probably be alright. But understand that the lyrics and content are completely adult. We have been season tickets holders to Broadway in Austin and this was one of the offerings. This is the first time in five years that I left at intermission. My husband and I usually go to the shows but my husband was sick so I ... read more went with my daughter - my 28 year old daughter. She was the one who suggested we leave. The actors were talented, the staging with the puppets was interesting, the pornography was disgusting and the lyrics were, well, just plain stupid. It wasn't thought provoking unless you are so completely uninformed you just learned Obama was half white. Like OMG! And here is my biggest complaint: Why was this one of the season ticket plays? Because of the content it should not have been included. I would have much rather seen one of the alternate selections that are offered to the season ticket holder at special rates. I can't help it. I am just going to have to complain. I feel because of the money that we spent for the season tickets that I had to go but now it is money down the drain. Shame on you Broadway Across America!

Avenue Q is about Real Life Review by: Trekkie Monster, Apr 18, 2009 |
| I took my 14 year old daughter to Avenue Q. Before I took to her to the show I told her about the plot. Her reply, "Dad, what do you think we talk about in middle school?" This show is the most hilarious show we have ever seen. The songs are catchy and witty. In fact we purchased the CD after the show and have been singing the songs ever since. This show is not for people who are afraid to talk about real life issues. ... read more The songs are completely honest about human nature. |

| To those who have rated this terribly: You must have had no idea what this show was about! No, it is not for young children, but for anyone who can handle puppets talking about a variety of taboo subjects and are willing to let go and just laugh...this show is amazing! The music is catchy and the interactions between the puppets and the actors are amazing. Must see! |

Pointless Review by: colaroid, Apr 16, 2009 |
| I have wanted to watch a show on broadway since I was 10. I convinced my partner to go because it was "funny". I was very dissapointed, I did not find it funny in the slightest. The humour is crass not clever. I grew up with jim hensons muppets which were actually funny so maybe thats made me expect too much. The actors were very good, I liked the relationship between puppet and master but the content was rubbish! Its the only show I have ever ... read more been too where I haven't bought the album afterwards |

Great show, make sure you can handle it Review by: krispyc333, Apr 14, 2009 |
| This was a great show. I'm a teenager, but my dad said that he was embarassed at all to bring me. Avenue Q was absolutely hilarious with tons of vulgar and demeaning humor. If you find this show offensive, don't go! It's your fault if you get offended because you didn't read the reviews. However, if you enjoy this American Pie/Superbad humor, you will love the show. |

| Oh my God what an embarrassment! What a waste of my time, money and my nieces’ innocence. There is a lot of profanity, sex, racist comments, is very offensive etc... After 10 minutes within the play I was looking for the nearest exit. This show is misleading and is not appropriate for teenagers. I have never before seen moppets having casual sex until now. Talking about sesame street gone wild… |

Laughed so hard we cried! Best Broadway play ever! Will see again! Review by: RhondaO, Apr 6, 2009 |
| My boyfriend and I just saw this and both agree this is almost if not THE best play we have ever seen! Yes, if you cannot just relax, take life for what it is and laugh at jokes (even raunchy or political ones) from time to time...then you don't need to go see this one. This is not for the uptight! We only saw a couple of people leave. Like any show...do your research before you go. The play has great messages that make you stop and think,... read more, along with moments that will have you holding your side from laughing so hard! A must see and we'll be seeing it again! It deserved every Tony! |

Amazing! Review by: Me, Apr 1, 2009 |
| This show is great! Puppets are hard to use, especially in a musical. The songs are awesome and hilarious. Characterizations are also great (even though I probably spelled that wrong) I will cry when this show closes. |

Not shocking, just childish. Review by: Lisa, Mar 2, 2009 |
| Do not go if you are prudish or easily shocked or offended. Do go if you have a teenage sense of humour and think puppets simulating sex and singing songs like 'The Internet's for Porn' is funny. I enjoyed Avenue Q but it wasn't one of my favourite shows, my 17 year old brother, however, loved it. I didn't find it shocking, just a little bit silly. The cast are very talented though. |

Not for kids. Two thumbs up! Review by: , Dec 16, 2008 |
| Saw it in May. Boyfriend and I loved it. Rather appalled that parents brought small children to the show, even though it was billed as not being appropriate. Great show for those who have mature mindset and can handle rather raunchy, controversial topics. Thought it was hilarious. Two thumbs up. |

Is Avenue Q for you? A few questions. Review by: sfstagewalker, Dec 12, 2008 |
Granted, I saw this show two years ago when I was visiting New York, so let's take these reflections as "seasoned". I look over some of the reviews here and I see some people who were fairly outraged or disappointed. So let me offer this to people considering their options: Do you like shows like Robot Chicken, South Park, or the Simpsons? Do you find it funny when artists take a genre and turn it back on itself? Is ... read more "snarky" a good thing? Did you find that life after college failed to live up to your expectations? If you answer "yes" to questions like this, you will probably really enjoy Avenue Q. Here's some more questions: Do you think that anything animated, or with puppets is for kids? Are you offended by frank depictions of sex, alcohol abuse, homosexuality, or profanity? Do you think that Jerry Falwell or Rush Limbaugh have some really good points? If you answer "yes" to questions like this, go see Mary Poppins or the Lion King. The whole point of Avenue Q is to take the iconography of our shared childhood (assuming you are under the age of 40) and apply this world of pre-school education to the much more complicated life lessons that we learn in our early 20's. Racism, intolerance, substance abuse, sexuality, loss of ideals, failure, and cynicsm are balanced with community, hope, friendship, forgiveness, and humor. And no, don't bring anyone under 16, no matter what the box office lady says.
