| I didn't like Altar Boyz. It was a waste of my time. The story was sophomoric and the music loud. It was not an enjoyable night out. I would take a pass. |

High energy evening of song and dance. Review by: Girlsgonebroadway, May 20, 2008 |
| Fabulous show, high energy, great singing and dancing. Each cast member is extremely talented, don't know how they got such great singers and dancers. Went so fast I would see it again, either in NY or on the road. I paid BBox discount price had a great seat in row 8 center. The theater was only half full on a Friday night, hope they are not going to close soon. My friends in the group paid way less than me because ... read more they got a great group discount. So go with a group if you can. I was not at all offended by their poking a little fun at religious groups. |

Fun Review by: dylan, May 8, 2008 |
| Cute show. Fast, light entertainment with a winning cast led by Michael Kadin Craig who is absolutely gorgeous. All the boys are talented though, including the new addition, Neil from So You Think You Can Dance. See it with discount tickets. |

Review by: nickeyb123, Apr 27, 2008 |
| one of my favorite shows...i've seen it four times so far since the end of January...i didn't really know what it was about and i was expecting a traditional Broadway-type show, but i was not disappointed to find out that the ABz were a boy-band (because i've always been a fan of bay-bands and still am)...but don't let the whole "boy-band" thing discourage you from going because, even if you're not into boy-bands or religion, ... read more it's still a great comedy...it's a satire of boy-bands and the popularity of christian music...and if you want to look at the religious side of it, it's just the right balance between being funny and not going overboard and offending anyone...i went to see it for the first time with my uncle, whose a minister, and he loved it...it always makes me want to sing a dance afterwards...a must see |

Fun, witty, better then expected, made my sides ache Review by: =D, Apr 8, 2008 |
| So I went to this show not really knowing what to expect. Maybe some humor, a little story, maybe some insults to the church....but boy was I wrong!! The show was spectacular!!!!!! The only reason it is off-broadway is because of the connection that it has to have with the auidience! I fell in love with this show the moment it started! It didn't poke fun at the church but more celebrated it! Even my aunt and mother who came with me loved it! ... read more Go see this show to have a great time and to give your stomach muscles a workout from laughing so hard!!! |

Highly recommended Review by: Craiggers38, Mar 21, 2008 |
| We saw this in NYC on 3/14/08. We also saw the touring version in Minneapolis in December 2006 and wanted to see it again when we were in New York- a few members of the tour we saw are now in the NYC version. The vocal talents and the dancing are outstanding! It's a parody of boy bands that hits the target head-on. As far as the religious aspect, most people will not be offended - it's only very slightly irreligious and only those ... read more easily offended would be bothered by this. There are also double-entendres and innuendo which will go over the heads of the young or the clueless. |

Fun and, suprisingly, uplifting Review by: , Jan 26, 2008 |
| Actually very good. I'm not a fan of all the b oy band stuff, but they parodied it. I saw it with my brother and father, all older, and we all loved it. True, it isnt a braodway show, but it wasnt meant to be. When i left the theatre i knew it was money well spent because i left after a few laughs and being uplifted. Recommend seeing. |

For girls 14-30 years of age. Fun. Review by: Pianist718, Jan 25, 2008 |
It is simply a kinda fun, silly, show. Do not expect serious acting or any drama. It's just a show that doesn't really leave anything in your mind after it ... just some laughs during. I don't think there was anything offensive there. It was fun, but I would not compare it to ON Broadway shows. I think girls 14-30 will enjoy this show the most. |

DEFINITELY GIVE IT A TRY Review by: Pat, Jan 12, 2008 |
| I saw the show in november with my 16 yr old son, 13 yr old daughter and a 14 yr old friend of hers. All of us loved the show. We got great discounted seats through broadwaybox (front row center - doesn't get better than that). No, it's not great dramatic theater, but I didn't go in expecting Ibsen. It's an energetic, thoroughly entertaining 90 minutes of fun. The cast was great, the music catchy and anyone who thinks it ... read more is offensive needs to go shopping for a sense of humor. I had 12 years of catholic schooling and trust me, this was funny. It's off-broadway so you can't go in expecting the same production values as a broadway show but if you go in with any kind of inkling of what to expect you should come out having had a good experience. |

A FABUOLOUS AND FUN SHOW Review by: Beth M, Dec 30, 2007 |
“FORGET YOUR TROUBLES, COME ON, GET HAPPY, YOU BETTER CHASE ALL YOUR CARES AWAY… “ (from Get Happy, by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler)
ALTAR BOYZ at the New World Stages
by Beth Mandelbaum
I just loved Altar Boys. It was 90 minutes of pure joy, laughter, and fun, with extremely clever and tuneful music. It has a wonderful cast, and excellent, energetic staging and choreography. It is a delightful spoof of boys’ bands, ... read more Christian popular music, and with more than just a nod to organized religion.
These five young men, Matthew, Mark, Luke, (of course the names of three of the four writers of the New Testament Gospels); the Latino, Juan, and the Jewish Abraham. It is a wonderfully multi-faith and multi-racial group. The five Altar Boyz are all wonderful and each is a highly unique performer. There is an amazing abundance of talent. The show made me feel so high spirited, and ebullient and energetic. The Altar Boyz appear never to stop!
And Altar Boyz is far more than 90 minutes of spoofing and laughter, as it treats seriously a number of personal issues that challenge the lives of the Altar Boyz, including feeling like an outsider, wanting to come out, death of parents, and situations in one’s past.
Altar Boyz also treats some very significant spiritual themes. The power of love to heal, the importance of community, connection and oneness, inclusiveness, diversity, acceptance, forgiveness of mistakes, the idea that people are somehow put into situations for a reason, and the desire to help alleviate the suffering from life's burdens are among these themes.
I have very little experience with boys’ bands; but while I was watching the show I kept thinking about Jersey Boys, even though they are very different kinds of musicals. In an early segment of Altar Boyz, called “The Genesis of The Altar Boyz,” each of the five present how they met each other and how the group was formed, quite analogous with the early scenes of Jersey Boys.
I found the central premise to be hilarious: during the “genesis” phase, the group was awestruck, quite literally, falling to the ground with lighting and thunder, as they hear the voice of God, telling them they should go out as a group to spread His word, His Love, and His healing message of salvation through their music. All of this is done in often hilarious, very tongue in cheek, comedic vein.
The mission of the band, as mandated by the “voice of God,” is to go from town to town using the power of their music and their presence to save souls and to to heal those who attend these revival meeting style concerts, i.e. the audience!
They use a wonderful device called the patented Sony DX12 “soul sensor,” which, with interconnected balls of colored lights, move and “scan” the audience, to determine the number of as yet unsaved souls. On an electronic screen we see the number of attendees who still need to be saved, cleansed, and healed: I believe that we began with 259 souls that needed the healing power of the Altar Boyz, and of course they ended with 0.
As this was the last night of their “Raise the Praise” tour, it was especially crucial that they not leave until all souls are saved and their burdens lifted.
The music is rich and diverse, and as best I could tell, combines aspects of of pop, hip-hop, rock, rap, Latin rhythms, ballads, and the like. The songs are very catchy and accessible and the lyrics are extremely clever and quite funny. Sometimes a song will start in a certain way and then suddenly turn into something entirely unexpected, which adds to the wonderful sense of surprise and creativity that pervades this show.
I was very interested to note in his playbill bio that the author of Altar Boyz's book, Kevin Del Aguila, is the son of a Peruvian minister and a church organist from Liverpool, so I would imagine that he has a religious background to draw upon. And I also read the bio of |

Go See Review by: T$, Dec 27, 2007 |
| Altar Boyz was definitely an unexpected surprise. Everyone in the cast, including Chad from "Grease, You're the One that I Want," was great. They had all the components of a boy band. The singing was good, the acting was good, and there were quite a few funny moments. If you get the chance go see this. The only downfall of this was that the theater it was in reminded me of the Men In Black ride from Universal Studios. |
