A MUST SEE!!! Review by: Renee, May 24, 2012 |
| I am a retired counselor from the NYC Dept of Education. I go to the theater A LOT!!! The new "A Streetcar Named Desire" should be on Broadway with the same cast for as long as humanly possible! At first I was concerned about an all black cast doing one of my favorite plays/movies. I thought who can compare to Marlon Brando? Blair Underwood that's who! ALL the characters were amazing. It was as if the play was written for each and every one of ... read more them. It just so happens, at the performance I was at 5/23/12, a truly obnoxious person was on their cellphone, in the front row! Without breaking stride, Ms Vega (Stella, who was in the middle of her lines), bent down to this person, and in character said, "Give me that thing" with such authority, the person handed it over immediately. The audience thundered applause. I just noticed the play has a limited run. As someone who goes to the theater A LOT, my advice to anyone that likes GOOD theater, you will be making a big mistake if you don't see this incredible performance. To get an idea of my likes and dislikes, The plays I have seen and loved are: Jersey Boys; The Lyons; End of the Rainbow; Don't Dress For Dinner; Fuerzabruta; Silence, the Musical...The plays I have seen and liked are: Jesus Christ Superstar; Other Desert Cities; Lonely I'm Not; Wicked; Vocapeople; My Sinatra; A Jew Grows in Brooklyn; Black Angels over Tuskegee; Freud's Last Session; 702 Punchlines & Pregnant; Girl's Night. The plays I have seen and did not like are: Leap of Faith; Channeling Kevin Spacey; Miss Abigail's Guide to Marriage and Dating...Shows I truly enjoyed but are gone: Ninth and Joanie; The 39 Steps; Enron; Born Yesterday; Baby It's You (however, with Baby It's You, I wish they had stayed true to the songs as Jersey Boy does. If they had, I know in my heart that they would still be around today. The actors were perfect but because they messed around with the songs, people were annoyed) Again, "A Streetcar Named Desire" was written for: Blair Underwood, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Nicole Ari Parker and Wood Harris. Don't miss it. I Hope you find this review helpful. |

I really wanted to like this play...... Review by: , May 21, 2012 |
| ....but I, too, left at intermission. The first act was extremely long; so long that it seemed to be rambling. That said, the acting was good. |

Left in the Middle!! Review by: tennislady, May 1, 2012 |
| First time I've left a show but I thought the acting was terrible. This is one of my favorite plays and the actors, rather than creating real human beings, created only stereotypes of their characters. The audience found many lines amusing, which I could not understand since this is a tragedy. I attribute the laughing to the poor portrayals of these very sad characters. |

Not HOT! Review by: joan, Apr 21, 2012 |
| It's New Orleans in summer and this production is cool.... and I don't mean hip. I mean cold, no heat, no passion between the players. Except for the occasional costume everyone looks like they just came from the spa on a lovely spring day. And the acting? |

Desire to see Streetcar AGAIN! Review by: Kia, Apr 19, 2012 |
| I enjoyed the play actors Nicole Ari Parker and Blair Underwood embodied the characters of Blanche and Stanley to a tee. I expect awards and accolades to come from this cast. Nicole hands down did a phenomenal job. From the music, to the wardrobe and the stage production overall made me feel like I was smack down in New Orleans. It is a must see. |

Review by: Carol, Apr 12, 2012 |
| Tennessee Williams’ Streetcar Named Desire is the latest revival on Broadway. Blair Underwood, the star power meant to draw audiences, does only that. The cast has but one actor, Nicole Ari Parker in the role of Blanche Dubois. The rest of the company largely walk through their lines. It is not clear whether Williams’ play no longer has the punch it did 65 years ago when he wrote it in 1947. However, it is evident that only ... read more Parker can convincingly command a Broadway stage. Even the set of the play in New Orleans 1952, while seedy enough, and Blanche’s beautiful costumes cannot make up for the miscast roles in this production. |
