Great show--and there is a way to see it for less Review by: CloverCat, Dec 1, 2009 |
| Just a note about the prior review and any others that remark that you have to pay full price. Generally that's true, but you can get standing-room only tickets for a fraction of the cost. I did this on Saturday night and thought the experience was perfectly fine; in fact, I kind of liked the fact that I could see over the heads of everyone in the orchestra. Yes, standing is not fun, but this is a quick 90-minute show, which is ... read more very different from a three-hour event. If you want to see the show but can't bear to spend $120+ per ticket, I recommend SRO as a very viable option. I agree, great show! |

Worth a dollar a minute! Review by: Diract 66, Dec 1, 2009 |
| If you get a chance to see the performances of Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig in this show you must pay full price. The good news is it was worth it because of the intense performances of the two actors. It is hard enough to keep up a conversation on stage with the rapid fire dialogue in this show but both these actors have the intensity and emotion to go along with the well written words. I feel that both actors evoked powerful performances ... read more and played off each other well. They must have had a great dialogue coach because each actor sounds like a Chicago cop and they never loose their accent, or character on stage. It is surprising how these two actors have the power to get an audience involved so much with their story that a setting is not missed, or needed in this show. They should BOTH share the Tony award for lead actor. Treat yourself, once a year, full price, it was worth it..... this time! |

This is a transformative play which will likely change the way many people think about theater. Run to see this show before it closes on Dec. 6, 2009! Review by: Baltasar D. Cruz, Nov 29, 2009 |
In this play Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman portray two Chicago police officers who are partners and lifelong friends. During most of the performance, they face the audience, at times sitting, at times standing, and recite a passionate narrative to the audience on a small stage, under two lights, using only two chairs as props. Only a couple of innovative backdrops make brief appearances while they speak. Despite the simplicity of the stage, I ... read more was mesmerized by Daniel Craig's and Hugh Jackman's evocative performances and the rich texture of their story and could easily imagine it being made into a screenplay. This is a transformative play which will likely change the way many people think about theater. My only negative criticism would be that at times Hugh Jackman seemed too reserved, as when he appeared to only half yell when his character was supposed to be uncontrollably unleashing ferocious rage. In contrast, Daniel Craig seemed to more convincingly portray the intense fury of Jackman's character when, ironically, he was describing the behavior of Jackman's character, violently thrusting an imaginary police baton across his own character's throat! Nevertheless, this is a remarkable play which I would strongly recommend that people make every effort to see before it closes on December 6, 2009 (when an extra performance has been added), even if you need to get standing room only tickets (as the standing room area was only a few rows directly behind my excellent lower orchestra level seats and this show is a relatively short one-and-a-half rivetting hours long). I also like the souvenir miniature handcuffs that can be purchased for $10.00. Finally, the seats in the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater were comfortable and there was ample space between the rows of seats, which I found especially gratifying after seeing shows in other theaters (i.e., the Neil Simon Theater and the Ethel Barrymore Theater) where the rows are way too close together. |

| A Must See! Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig were magnificent. Both gave Tony worthy performances. The 90 minutes went by so fast. We were mesmerized and the audience loved the show. There was a standing ovation and thunderous applause. My husband said this show was well worth premium tickets |

Fantastic Review by: janey2, Oct 31, 2009 |
| We are regular theater goers, seeing at least 7 shows a season. This show was the best of the best! You do not walk away thinking that you were entertained on a Saturday evening and you forget about it. This show stays with you. We are still discussing it two days later. The acting was superb (with Craig just a little better). Do not miss this one!! |

A steady Rain is Superb Review by: Auds, Oct 28, 2009 |
| Spending 90 minutes with Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig was one of the highlights of my broadway experience this year. Superb acting by both made the 90 minutes pass all too quickly. Both actors played well alone but were even better when their pieces intertwined. I was in the 1st row and the emotions evoked by both actors was remarkable. If you can get a ticket for this show, do so; you won't be disappointed!! |

Holy Handcuffs! Daniel Craig is a Great Stage Actor! Review by: BroadwayBabySawIt, Oct 9, 2009 |
| Saw this two-man show last night - we are big fans of Hugh Jackman, loved him in Boy from Oz. But the night is dominated by the acting chops of Daniel Craig - we believed him as a conflicted cop who is in love with his partner's wife. Hugh was charming and physically graceful as ever, just not believeable in this role, and when he gently collapsed to the stage at the end, we felt that this careful movement was an example of why he is not killing ... read more this part - his collapse was well planned and carefully executed, but not real at all and does not reveal the character, rather Hugh just falls in a way that does no injury to his million-dollar legs, and that's a good thing, but reminds us again of who he is in real-life, not who is is trying to be in the part. Hugh shines as characters with a naughty side and a heart of gold, and sadly he is miscast as a greedy, self-centerd cop in this one. But do see it for Daniel Craig's great work as a stage actor, he disappears into the role, and portrays a real human being making tough choices. We wish that the story was better - there does not seem to be much of a story here, or it's more about what others did than what these cops did, they seem to be reacting all the time - something is missing from the writing, may be a moment that defines each guy rather than lots of exposition about what others did. THere is a strange parallel story going on - the 2 main characters talk about being like brothers from childhood, but we also learn how much more 2 real brothers who are gangsters will to to support each other, so the cop-brother theme does not work. Set, direction and lighting are effective and really support the actors. See it for Mr Craig's great work within the confines of a slender story. Also - don't miss the handcuffs souvenir, for $10 you can take home a little keychain set of handcuffs that are the most unusual Broadway memento that we've seen in a long time. Beats the t-shirt, magnet or hat choices from other shows hands down (or hands up, as it were). |

This is a gritty Drama- No sing, dancing or pretty sets Review by: Kim, Oct 6, 2009 |
| Saw this show on it's second night. This was a Tony deserving show. Daniel Craig lost himself in his role and Hugh Jackman-what an emotional performance! These guys nailed it. I could write a better review if I were themselves. The crowd that night were serious theater lover who went to great lengths to get tickets and the people I met in my row found it worth the effort. Powerful story that I couldn't get out of my head for days. I love my ... read more musicals but this show was so touching and well acted that it stayed with me for days. Great work Daniel and Hugh! |

Actors more than Stars. Review by: Frank, Oct 4, 2009 |
| I have to admit that I was drawn to "A Steady Rain" due to the fact that I like the films of Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig. When the play began, I watched the opening somewhat star struck. As the play progressed though, they ceased to be Hugh and Daniel to me and began to be Joey and Denny. They pulled me in as they say and I was riveted. These men are actors more than stars, and actors of the highest caliber. The writing is also excellent,... read more, first introducing the characters, then developing the story with a great mix of humor and drama. Leaving the theater I felt the story in my chest. It's something I'll never forget. |

Powerful show with superb acting Review by: Daniel and Hugh fan, Oct 4, 2009 |
This show proves that both Daniel and Hugh can act and are wonderful actors who get into their characters.. they are totally convincing as 2 Chicago cops in that you forget you are watching 2 film superstars. They both are so good, especially Daniel who to me, was outstanding, it made me think why can't American film actors (not broadway actors) translate to the stage as well as the British and Australians. A very powerful show with a ... read more bare stage that forces you to listen to every word and follow the complicated story they're about to share with the audience. If you're looking for fun entertainment, this is not the show for you. If you are looking for superior acting with a serious and twisting plot...go see it now. |

Stand for $29! Review by: Joe, Oct 3, 2009 |
For 29 bucks I stood in the back of the orchestra in the center for this 90 minute show and that was perfect! If you MUST SEE this show and can stand do it for $29. They did pretty well with the Chicago accents I must admit. Daniel Craig was much more effective than Hugh Jackman. I didn't believe anything Hugh was saying as he was too big. Nothing seemed like it was coming from the heart. He was very presentational and surface. ... read more Daniel Craig seemed to dig deeper. The climax at the end left me empty. W/O spoiling the show it just fell flat. This is going to sound harsh and I don't mean it to but I don't think Hugh has the dramatic acting chops for such a dramatic part. He was very mannered and mechanical and nothing seemed to come from deep within. Maybe with a much more experienced actor that could match Daniel Craig it would have been better. Glad I saw it but happy I only paid 29 Bucks! |

Daniel Craig is a must See! Review by: Grace, Oct 3, 2009 |
| Daniel Craig is a chamelion, a real character actor. My husband who is English and a Bond fan did not have a clue who he was. I said you know the actor that played the South African Jew in Munich? He said who? I said he is also the new James Bond He could not believe it was him, that's how good he was. His Chicago accent was exactly like Denis Farina the actor, who I believe was a Chicago Cop at one time. Dark script. Hugh Jackman was Hugh ... read more Jackman; his accent was not great and he looked exactly the same as he aways does, he gave a strong performance but he should have changed his look, I did not believe for one minute that he was from Chicago. A must see if only for Daniel Craig's Tony award caliber performance. |

Stripped Down Adult Drama Review by: beezball, Sep 29, 2009 |
A downplayed set does justice to this stripped down drama. I went to New York hoping to see something that wouldn't make me feel like a idiot and this adequately challenged the intellect like few stories have done. The acting was very good as was the set and the story. So I recommend this despite it's overuse of rough language for adults not seeking something frilly. |

So close but not there yet... Review by: td, Sep 29, 2009 |
| A Steady Rain is an honest, unflattering betrayal of Chicago cops...when it ran in Chicago, surprisingly, it was a huge succuss with the same cops it exposed. The main reason as to why Chicago cops supported this show is exactly the element that is missing from Hugh Jackmans performance (and unfortunaly Daniel Craig has channeled all the complexities of his character} A steady Rain is a strong show but Hugh Jackman is not (at this point) ... read more as succusful as his co star Daniel Craig. Mr. Craig looses himself in the role of a Chicago cop caught in conflict with his partner. The reason for Craigs succuss is the resason for Jackmans weanesses. Craig has slipped into the many layers of his character while Jackman is skirting on the suface of what drives a cop from Chicago. Bieng a retired Chicago teacher I have taught many men who have become Chicago cops and I feel I unstand the roots of these men. Jackman is close but yet so far. He needs some honest notes as to where he is coming up short. I read the two stars went to Chicago to talk with Chicago cops - Jackman nees a return visit. He is so close... |
