Good author, bad play Review by: Conrado, Jan 28, 2007 |
The acting is good, but even the actors realize this is a hard sell. I attended Saturday Jan 27 matinee. The audience gave minimal response. Best in the play is the interaction between the two sisters. Worst is the long monologues, most especially the over the river speeches and the bulding manager. What a waste of $304, which I paid for 4 tickets. I've seen 2 previous plays by Reza and have enjoyed them, but this one is really bad. Avoid ... read more this one.

So what! Review by: , Jan 26, 2007 |
I have to agree with the last reviewer, I didn't get it, did not connect emotionally with the characters (although the acting was good, especially the always wonderful Denis O'Hare), and people, including myself, were dozing off. I did not care for Zoe Caldwell, she was not clear in her lines, the whole thing was disappointing.
A big "so what". |

Don't bother Review by: stagestrucknyc, Jan 23, 2007 |
| A pretentious multimedia mess. Players step out of their roles to engage in monologues (comments to the Spanish playwright or musings about acting). They step off the stage into the audience to continue their deliveries. A yellow brick background wall serves as a screen for slides of famous actors of decades past, especially the 1940s, and projections of the players on live video. The presentation is billed as a ... read more blur between reality and theater and I found it quite confusing at times. Perhaps some things are lost in the translation by David Ives. I was frequently reminded of Sartre's No Exit. In the preview I saw, it ran two hours without intermission, although the program states an hour and a half. Many in the audience were dozing off and left perplexed. Although the acting is notable across the board, Zoe Caldwell is a bit under-utilized |
