Skip it. Review by: TC, Jun 4, 2007 |
| So,so, show. Kevin Spacey is interesting, but Eve Best is awful. She literally yells every word on stage, so there is no subtlety to her character. I couldn't hear a difference in any of her emotions. The whole show left me totally cold. |

Great but Painful Review by: TE, May 29, 2007 |
The play was the usual great-but-painful O'Neill play and Spacey was perfect for the part--the only one since Jason Robards who can play that kind of character authentically.

A little Long but worth seeing Review by: Donna, May 23, 2007 |
| I went with my husband to see this play at the beginning of May. To be honest I only went because of Kevin Spacey and found that no only did I really like it but all three actors in the play were great. I will admit the beginning is alittle slow but to be expected as it is Eugene O'Neil but the second 1/2 was great and that was the longest part. My husband fell asleep because drama is not his thing but I truely was very glad I saw it and ... read more actually loved the story even if it was sad. |

Fine acting Review by: Vicky, May 22, 2007 |
| I wasn't very familiar with this Eugene O'Neill play but I went to see it out of curiosity. I thought the acting was great by Kevin Spacey, Eve Best and Colm Meaney. I have to agree that the Irish accents made certain words hard to understand. Maybe it's because I'm not too familiar with O'Neill's writing but I did not find myself loving this play. I liked the Second Act better because Kevin Spacey and Eve Best were on stage together for a ... read more longer time. They definitely have great chemistry together and were convincing as two people in love with each other. Even though I didn't love the play, I was impressed with the fine actors in the show. |

Very moving... Review by: Burkie, May 14, 2007 |
I was in NY for the first time on holiday and went to a preview night. Im Irish and live in Amsterdam and had intended going to something special while visiting NY. I do love Kevin Spacey and was drawn also by the fact that it had and Irish emigrant factor to it. Some here are reviewing accents..well of course I had no problem understanding them! I found it very moving, brilliant acting from all 3 actors and yes it was dramatic because it ... read more was supposed to be as are all of these kind of productions! Just go to the Gaeiety Theatre in Dublin...for a taste of melodrama! I loved it, bravo! |

A big disappointment Review by: Sally, May 4, 2007 |
| Don't bother - what a disappointment. It was tough understanding their Irish accents. Kevin Spacey was a disappointment and so was the show. Monologues were too long; lost what was going on - even fell asleep. Definitely don't pay full price. |

Eve is the BEST Review by: Joe M, Apr 30, 2007 |
| Eve Best is the best! Her performance as Josie was "out-of-this world." I saw the Saturday April 28th matinee. Liked Colm Meaney but I thought Kevin Spacey's performance was fussy and unconvincing....BUT SEE THIS "MOON"....for EVE BEST..Bravo! |

Performances of a lifetime. Review by: ILOVEPLAYS, Apr 28, 2007 |
As much as I liked the last revival of this O'Neil play, Kevin Spacey and Eve Best eclipse the fine performances of Gabriel Byrne and Cherry Jones. Spacey and Best and Colm Meaney are sure to be nominated for Tony awards. Their images in this play are burned into my mind's eye for all time. That good. |

GREAT DRAMA on BROADWAY! Review by: RALPHIE, Apr 24, 2007 |
EXCELLENCE GLOWS ON BROADWAY with three top notch performances giving this Eugene O'Neill classic a wonderful revival. Eve Best really owns the show, taking nothing away from Kevin Stacy. Best's role is the main character in the play, so she has the greatest opportunity to excel.
I'd also like to note there is no homosexual theme in the play. With 19 current Broadway plays and musicals being gay-themed, a turnaround is seriously overdue.... read more.
We had great seats for the play, but two customers with Orch Row A seats failed to show up, so we moved there at intermission. |

A nice moon... Review by: Joe , Apr 12, 2007 |
I saw it last Saturday, the matinee show, and was pleased to see that the theater was full. The play itself is typically O'Neill, what with the heavy-handed characters who are basically destroying their lives. And I don't mean this in a bad way. The characters are well developed, and the dialouge between them is what really drives the play.
As for the cast, I have to say that I was very impressed with Eve Best and Colm Meany. They both ... read more give very in-depth performances, and completely embody their characters. Kevin Spacey was ok, but is just not right for the role. He was too flamboyant, and also rambled on with some of the lines, giving no emotional impact to them at all. I can't imagine an alcoholic womanizer acting as he did. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a good actor, and in the play he's not "bad," just not as good as I thought he would be.
Overall it was a great experience. It's not too often that Broadway gets full mounted productions of classic American plays. Too much time, energy, and money is poured into the bubblegum musical revivals. So for an impactful piece of theater, go if you get the chance. And if you do, I'm telling you, Eve Best and Colm Meany will blow you away. |

Don't Miss this Show! Review by: Broadway Obsessed, Apr 10, 2007 |
| What an excellent play! I admit that seeing Kevin Spacey perform live was what drew me to the play, but Eve Best's performance left me in awe. All three actors are incredibly talented and fascinating to watch. The energy and talent possessed by this small cast is so impressive that you will consider yourself lucky to have seen it. |

Great Show!!!!!! Review by: chicogirl, Apr 9, 2007 |
| We saw the show on Easter Sunday. I had seen it in 1973 with Coleen Dewhurst and George C. Scott. I loved it just as much today as I did way back then. The cas was fabulous. The humor was intact. The acting was totally gripping. What was great was to see all the young people in the audience. I am so happy that I got to see Kevin Spacey on stage. |

Give it a few weeks, sit close, plan to followup Review by: J. Longchamps, Mar 30, 2007 |
There is no doubt that this is a highly talented cast. I mean, these actors are just phenomenal. However, there is something intangible that seems to prevent the three main characters from connecting, and I cannot tell if it's part of the story (that James Tyrone and Josie Hogan are from such different backgrounds that they cannot pierce each other's world), the writing (cadenced language reminiscent of "Awake and Sing"), or if it's that the ... read more actors were just a tad nervous on this first preview in NY. The cast is reprising their roles from London, so -no doubt- they are in good form to be tackling these characters, but I'm still considering my final reaction to the production.
For those who might not know, "Moon..." serves as a continuation (or coda to) "Long Day's Journey Into Night." Although the play can stand as a single piece, it will certainly enrich the experience to read the companion play before (or even after) seeing "Moon..." in order to get a little back story of James Tyrone. This work is biographical- O'Neill conjures his alcoholic brother in both plays- so be sure to follow up the play with a little research to learn about the parallels between O'Neill's life and the story of "Moon..."
The staging is fine- nothing remarkable about the sets or costumes or lighting. I recommend trying to get close, because the acoustics don't seem the best. This theater doesn't have much of a rise in the Orchestra seats, so if you're short your view may be eclipsed.
In the end the cast got a standing ovation, and I feel they earned it--not only for their highly physical performance in this production, but also for their previous work in film and onstage, which many audience members seemed to be huge fans of. It was nice to see Jonathan Pryce, a few seats over from me, mulling over the production as well. This show is certainly worth the challenge. |
