Much better than expected! Review by: Mark, Mar 2, 2010 |
| Knew the show was going to be Ok, just wanted to see the great Angela Lansbury. What I didn't expect, and neither did the person I went with, was a very tight and beatifully performed musical full of emotion, humour and songs that I found myself downloading after the performance. This is a coming of age story for the young, middle age and old. Send in the Clowns was never one of my favorite songs but seeing it performed in the context ... read more it was meant for was truly a delight. Catherine Zeta Jones is stunningly beautiful and amazing in this show and Angela Lansbury did not disappoint; the whole cast is amazing. The show starts out a bit artsy, but WOW just wait until you see where it goes. |

Loved it! Go see it. Review by: purlygurl, Feb 25, 2010 |
| Saw last week, even without Katherine Zeta Jones the show was amazing. Enjoyed every minute of the 3 hours. Nothing like a Sondheim show and this one definitely did him justice. Send in the Clowns was as wonderful as it was 40 years ago! Not sure the younger generation would like it as much, old fashioned musical the way musicals are supposed to be |

"The Little Things You Do Together" (Stephen Sondheim, "Company") Review by: Beth M, Feb 23, 2010 |
It was a wonderful experience on Sunday to revisit Stephen Sondheim’s’ “A Little Night Music,” which was based on the Ingmar Bergman film “Smiles of a Summer Night.” I was extremely fortunate to have seen the original in the 70’s and also a revival around 1990 at City Opera. I hadn’t listened to this fascinating score in many years. It was such a pleasure to hear. I was sitting close enough that the lyrics were crystal clear. To me, as to ... read more so many others, Stephen Sondheim is an extraordinary lyricist as well as one of our greatest modern composers. And this year celebrates his 80th birthday. Among the themes of “A Little Night Music” are tales of difficult, complex, conflicted relationships; the challenges of marriage; the tricks that lovers play on each other; well-deep longing and passion; waiting; personal disappointment and regrets; lovers discovering their foolishness; and the pain of trying to recapture the past. It is interesting to note that many of these themes are also found in Stephen Sondheim’s previous musicals Company and Follies. There is also a scattering of some wise and somewhat existential thoughts about love and life, and what is truly important. Also, to me, the musical seems to evoke a sense of metaphoric connection with the cosmos, in the summer sky, and in the meaning of the phrase “smiles of a summer night,” which, as I understood it, implies love and death. I was able to get a discount and the fantastic seat F 101 because this was Cathryn Zeta-Jones’ vacation week. Jayne Patterson, Ms. Zeta-Jones’ understudy, was fantastic. The audience was extremely enthusiastic and cheered her at the curtain call, at which nearly everyone was standing. There were other good performances. However, the utter thrill of the afternoon was being in the presence of the legendary Angela Lansbury who was absolutely magnificent, commanding the stage like royalty with her brilliant, moving acting, and ever fascinating singing. And she does it all with a twinkle in her eye. The music is deeply compelling and at times, haunting. While “Send in the Clowns” has long been part of musical popular culture, there are many brilliant songs, ranging from clever, witty and humorous to others that are haunting, dark and profound. Among my favorites are “Liaisons,” “ Every Day A Little Death,” “The Sun Won’t Set,” “ Perpetual Anticipation,” “ The Miller’s Son,” and “A Weekend in the Country.” The minimalist set worked especially well used in the second act, where the actors are spending “a weekend in the country.” The set and the lighting evoked the intrigue and fascination of the land where the sun almost never sets, but where as soon as it does, dawn almost immediately soon follows suit. The set often evoked what to me appeared to be an eerie glow. I do recommend seeing A Little Night Music. However, because the full price is steep, I would look into Standing Room or Rush ticket opportunities, or consider seeing it when Ms. Zeta-Jones takes another vacation, which I believe in coming up in early April. However, there is always the possibility that there will be discounts later in the run.

Best Musical We've Seen in Years Review by: UWS-er, Feb 18, 2010 |
We thoroughly enjoyed last night's production, which featured Catherine Zeta-Jones' understudy, Jayne Paterson. A Little Night Music is one of those wonderful musicals that has the depth of a good play. Sondheim's lyrics are so clever. It's a sex farce for adults, with more mature themes and interpretations. The performances were uniformly terrific. Excellent voices and acting. This show really deserved its standing ovation.

Review by: Leawoodcats, Dec 29, 2009 |
| Stunning in its simplicity, no Broadway fan will want to miss an outstanding production of this classic and timeless Sondheim musical. Catherine Zeta-Jones is elegant in the role of Desiree, and achieves her Oscar-winning form as she delivers "Send in the Clowns," one of the most poignant songs in any Broadway show. Angela Lansbury is superb in one of the other leading roles, and receives applause at one point for just a two word exclamation. ... read more The functional minimalist scenery puts the emphasis where it should be-on the characters, not the sets. The complex sophisticated score supports the action with wonderful orchestrations that are beautifully sung. The handsome lighting and costume design help to polish off this splendid evening of theater. Warning: if you are looking for a Hairspray musical, this is not it. But, if your looking to see another example of the brilliance of Stephen Sondheim, head to the Walter Kerr Theatre for this extremely satisfying revival. |

A solid show, although not amazing Review by: CloverCat, Dec 13, 2009 |
I saw this show on December 11th. In a word, I thought the show was, well, good; not amazing, but certainly not bad or disappointing, just good. On the plus side, the acting and singing are quite impressive, and the show is cute and music very memorable. On the negative side, I'm not a fan of really minimalist sets, and this one was extremely basic. Also, I have to admit the story felt a tad slow and old in places; for example, there ... read more were a lot of sexual innuendos that seemed a little dated and trite to me. Overall, I prefer the newer musicals on Broadway like Memphis and Next to Normal, which really pack a jolt of energy and novelty. Also, significantly, those two and others offer significant discounts; I'm disappointed that A Little Night Music offers nothing. All of that said, this is certainly an enjoyable show with great music for those who are interested.
