What true theater is... Review by: JT, Nov 23, 2010 |
| What a revelation this show was. It restored my faith in broadway theater. The last few years have been pretty bad with one bubble gum musical after another. Or shows that are fake and corny with piped in music and special effects. This my friends is true theater, great actors, great voices, emotional depth, and of course a great book and incredible music. I'm so glad Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch are doing it together. Two pros and ... read more true theater legends who belong in a Sondheim classic like this. The rest of the cast was equally as good as they were. A class act all around. Definitely see it. |

Review by: , Nov 11, 2010 |
| This play to me was overated. I think the acting was great. The play was more of a drama then a musical. So if you are looking for a upbeat muscial, this is not the play to see. Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch were excellent. But this play was disappointing to me and my 3 friends. |

Review by: Colonel John, Sep 30, 2010 |
| my wife and i think that A Little Night Music is one of the best shows we have ever seen in over 40 years of attending shows. The cast was amazing. Sort of like a chain with no weak lings and each link fantastic. The set was minimalistic, something we do not associate with a broadway musical.Sometimes less is more. |

Sondheim's greatest work Review by: Broadway Baby, Sep 11, 2010 |
| This is the greatest show I have ever had the privilege to see. Sondheim's writing is impeccable. He is a master of character development. Every note and word brings depth to the realistic and relatable characters. Bernadette Peters is a master at interpreting Sondheim. She had me laughing and crying. I was transfixed throughout the entire show. Her performance of "Send in the Clowns" will remind you of why it's a Broadway classic. This is ... read more an extremely intelligent and entertaining show. If you're looking for a night of light entertainment or a family show, this is not it. But if you're looking for a brilliant production that will change the way you see theater, this is absolutely it. |

The Tony Award should go to Elaine Stritch and Bernadette Peters Review by: B'way Moe, Sep 1, 2010 |
| Now that CZJ is gone, I finally got tickets to see the wonderfully Sondheim "A Little Night Music." Elaine Stritch and Bernadette Peters are made to play these roles. Even if you saw the wrong cast the first time, believe me this cast makes it work. See it now with Stritch and Peters and see authentic Broadway. |

Great show tiny seats Review by: blondie, Aug 26, 2010 |
| Fabulous show. Terrible seats. Bernadette Peters and co are terrific. We sat upstairs in the most physically uncomfortable seats ever. Just got off hip replacement and thought it would break. Seats are large enough for a 6yo |

Classic Broadway-An Enjoyable Time in the Theater Review by: Gymdandy, Aug 25, 2010 |
I got half-price tickets for A Little Night Music and I found it to be charming and engrossing and was so glad that it had some substance. I am so tired of airheaded Broadway musicals like Wicked and The Lion King where parents and their children eat and drink and talk loudly throughout the whole play! A Little Night Music is adult in it's score and subject matter, so people actually paid attention to the stage. The ageless Bernadette Peters ... read more and Elaine Stritch gave fantastic performances as did the rest of the brilliant cast. ALNM is a classic.

A Wonderful Adult Show Review by: Carol, Aug 22, 2010 |
| We had seen this show with the original cast--Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury. Bernadette Peters' interpretation of the role of Desiree had a much greater range than Zeta-Jones's. Peters could make you laugh and cry at the plight of the character. Elaine Stritch was cast in the role Angela Lansbury had had. Stritch was herself the lush and seemed to be blowing her lines toward the end of the production. Nevertheless, it ... read more is a wonderful night at the theater. The supporting cast and especially Alexander Hanson as Fredrik and Leigh Ann Larkin as Petra were wonderful. |

What a Difference a Cast Makes! Review by: Sondheim Fan, Jul 31, 2010 |
I saw the show in December with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury and left disappointed. Angela Lansbury, as always, lit up the stage and this review is not in any way meant to criticize her. However, I thought CZJ, despite her extraordinary beauty, was uninteresting and didn't know how to move on stage. Overall, the play never really hung together and the characters felt unconnected to one another. Sondheim fan that I am, I ... read more went back to see it with Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch. It was a completely different show. First of all, A Little Night Music is a true ensemble piece. No one character dominates musically; in fact, the individual songs are so strong that each character is essentially given a show-stopper, even though it is Desiree who sings the well-known "Send in the Clowns." The entire ensemble nature of the play was lost when CZJ had the role of Desiree. It is clear that Ms. Peters knows how to dazzle on stage while still letting everyone else dazzle as well. Moreover, even though Ms. Stritch was sometimes forgetful and delivered her lines haltingly, she brought a memorable frailty to her part. Second, I've completely changed my view of the costumes. My original view was that the show's costumes were too dark, especially since I had seen the 1970s production with Glynis Johns and Hermione Gingold which was a much brighter, more colorful version. However, when I saw the Peters-Stritch version, I wasn't bothered by the costumes at all. It also occurred to me that the dark monochromatic nature of the costumes might be a kind of homage to Smiles of a Summer Night which was in black-and-white. Finally, A Little Night Music is both farcical and deadly serious. It is amused at the goings-on of its characters, while achingly portraying the mismatched nature and compromises of their various relationships. The music is stunning, the lyrics wickedly clever. I never thought it dragged; I never wanted it to end.

A delectable evening with a wonderful new cast Review by: R, Jul 25, 2010 |
Having seen the original production while it was still in previews and at least three other versions, and having the heard the glorious score many, many times, I had mixed feelings about seeing it this time around since I thought that Catherine Zeta-Jones was wrong for the role of Desirée (too young, too slick), though I very much wanted to see Angela Lansbury. So I equivocated until it was about to close, when I heard that Bernadette Peters and ... read more Elaine Stritch would enter the cast this summer. What a joy to see them! I realize now that with all the renditions of Send in the Clowns I have heard (Sinatra, Streisand, Sarah Vaughan, Glenn Close, Cleo Laine, Betty Buckley, and so on) I never really understood its pathos until I felt tears as Bernadette Peters gave her poignant rendition. And Stritch's astringent delivery of Mme Armfeldt's lines and wonderful song Liaisons were unforgettable. (So is Angela Lansbury's rendition, I have discovered, and you can download it from iTunes). To my surprise and relief, British actor Alexander Hanson totally held his own with the two new divas in the cast, so that the show is balanced. I do wish the set was more interesting and especially that the costumes in Act ! were not nearly entirely black. I realize that a point was being made by switching to pale pastels and whites in Act 2, but the same point could be made by using deep rich colors in Act 1, and that would not leave the audience wondering whose funeral had been left out of the script. (In my view, the only one who belongs in black is Mme Armfeldt, who is mourning a whole way of life, but with everyone else in black too this point is lost.) But this is a relatively minor disappointment in an absolutely delectable evening. For those who are turned off by the sophistication of the plot and think of it as amoral, well, all I can say is that there is a reason Mamma Mia! and Mary Poppins are still running, and you belong in their audiences. |

The Best Sondheim Show...IMHO. Review by: tophat143, Jul 24, 2010 |
| This musical might be the best Sondheim ever wrote. With a beautiful music sung by wonderful actors, you could not have a better evening at the theater. Bernadette Peters, Elaine Stritch, Alexander Hanson and the entire cast were wonderful. Each performance was just impeccable and you get to understand each others point of view and that's the greatness that is Sondheim and the direction of Trevor Nunn. Granted, the setting is minimal and ... read more though I prefer a lavish production, I was not disappointed at all. See it for the glorious music. See it for the performances esp by Bernadette and Elaine (both great interpreters of Sondheim's music) To witness Bernadette sing Send in the Clown is worth the price of admission. I had a wonderful time seeing this wonderful show. I love A Little Night Music! |
